three inches from the floor

Britt and I are replacing the carpeting in the condo (a cream-colored stain magnet which has been abused from years of general wear and cats) with laminate flooring.  Anyone who tells you that putting down laminate flooring is easy is only partially telling the truth.  Putting down laminate flooring is, in fact, remarkably easy.  It's the moving furniture, tearing up the old carpet, prying tack strips from the concrete underfloor, patching the underfloor when the tack strips pull up big chunks of  concrete, disposing of the old carpeting, removing the baseboards without putting holes in the drywall, sanding and painting the baseboards, replacing the baseboards after the floor is down, and moving the furniture back that's the pain in the ass.  Especially when you're still living in your work area.  So far we've had to buy a table saw, gallons of paint and several minor hand tools (as well as the flooring itself); today I price nailguns.  The Holcomb Bridge Home Depot knows us on a first-name basis already.

Grrraaahh.

In other news, B and I will take a break from floor-related stress in a month when we visit New York.  I've heard it's a pretty cool place.  I think we even know some people who live there.
