Fear

One of the first things I can remember seeing on TV was footage of the Tacoma Narrows Bridge collapse on a show called You Asked For It. This is one of those scattered memories from before we moved into Grand Rapids, so I was less than 4 years old. I think this is why I've always has some degree of fear related to big bridges. It didn't help that when I moved to Tampa, it was at least a weekly occurance that there would be multi hour long back ups on the Howard Frankenstein Bridge. It was a two lane bridge with no breakdown lanes. Also in Tampa was the Sunshine Skyway. When I moved here, remaining span of the old Skyway was all that was up. The new Skyway was under construction and the other span had a gaping hole in it from where a tanker hit the bridge.

So, I'm afraid of big bridges.

I think I'll drive over the Sunshine Skyway tomorrow. I've been across as a passenger, but I've never driven the span.
