Your Superbowl ads in review

Feb 01, 2009 23:02

This year's Superbowl ads started off with a highly anticipated trailer.
  • GI Joe: The Rise of Cobra. It looks ...OK. I'm not going to pan it just on this trailer but it could have been better.
  • Hyundai Genesis You know. Fuck it. The car commercials all sucked this year. I'm just not going to mention any of them.
  • Bud Light Don't buy Bud Light for every meeting. This was a good one.
  • Angels & Demons Trailer I never saw DaVinci Code so I can't really comment on this.
  • Jason Stathum Audi Forget what I said. There was ONE good car commercial. Statham basically shilling his Transporter role for what would have been a great car commercial any year.
  • Forever Young: Pepsi Pepsi really failed this year. They only had one good commercial and this wasn't it. To quote a fellow viewer, "Well that was a waste of 6 million dollars."
  • Doritos: Crystal Ball. While Pepsi's soft drink marketing department sucked balls, the FritoLay division was kicking ass. One of the best of the night.
  • Bud Light: Sweden I love Conan, and this was a brilliant ad. SKILLNADEN ÄR DRINKABILITY VROOM VROOM
  • Movie Trailer: Year One Looks like a pretty funny History of the World: Part 1 redux.
  • Bridgestone Tires: Mr. Potato Head Creative premise and it was pretty funny and memorable. Bridgestone had a good ad firm this year.
  • Fast & Furious Four: The Fuck? Really. I think that's the actual title.
  • Castrol Oil: Grease Monkeys Pretty funny, nothing special but it was a pretty good one.
  • Land of the Lost Please stop letting Will Ferrell make movies. Please.
  • Doritos: Power of the Crunch This one was pretty good and was the first commercial this year to feature someone getting hit by a bus. Doesn't top Doritos other offering though.
  • Pepsi Diet Max Diet Cola for Guys. This was the best ad Pepsi put out tonight. It was better than the worst Coke ad. Good job guys!
  • Pedigree Maybe you should get a dog. I liked it. It was cute.
  • Budweiser: Showoff/Fetch Probably the best of the beer commercials (They were all pretty good though.)
  • Budweiser: Daisy the Dancing Horse This one was great I enjoyed the epic "Last of the Mohicans: I will find you. No matter how long it takes, no matter how far, I will find you." thing going on here. :)
  • Star Trek I'm liking this revamp.
  • Gatorade It was kinda forgettable. Hey lets flash a bunch of celebs/athletes on the screen.
  • Cars.com: Confidence It was ok. The best part was when he applied to Princeton out of High School to be the Dean
  • e*trade Not a fan of the talking baby commercials.
  • Movie Trailer: Up This looks like a cute movie. Seems like it should have been a Hayao Miyazaki movie
  • Bud Light: Drinkability The Madden marker things been used in a couple ads already so the newness of the gimmick isn't there. Not the best BL ad, but still pretty good.
  • Death and Taxes HR Block. Do people really need to be reminded of the only two certain things?
  • Teleflora.com What do flowers in a box say? Good premise, the crudeness was a little shocking to the over 50 crowd. I liked it though.
  • Cheetos: Attack of the Pigeons I love the passive aggressive Cheetos ads. This one did not disappoint.
  • Monsters and Aliens I saw it with my 3-D glasses on. It looks like a fun movie though. I plan to see it. :)
  • SoBe 3D Not as good as the "Thriller" one from last year but unless they were going to do "Grease Lightning" or "Footloose" I don't think they'd top it. Last year they could have Rick Rolled us but that's played now.
  • Nextel: Rocking the Runway Entertaining. I kinda missed this one and it doesn't seem to be on Hulu so I can't rewatch.
  • Priceline: Bill Shatner Fucking great. He's such a whore, but he has a great sense of humor. I only wish it had been Takei imitating him on the other end of the phone.
  • Arby's Zoo I hate Arby's with a passion, but this made me smile.
  • Coke: Avatars I got it. Nobody else did. That's not a good ratio. People just didn't get the Coke/Internet brings us all closer message. I liked it but if people don't get it, they won't.
  • Bridgestone: Moon Rover Funny, not as good as the Potato Head commercial though.
  • Denny's Serious Breakfast I've seen a similar one, but the whipped cream got a laugh out of me.
  • Monster.com: The View Pretty simple, to the point and creative. The local news ranked this the best. It didn't make my top ten. But it wasn't horrible.
  • Budweiser: Generations Kind of hypocritical of AB to make an ad about a hardworking immigrant Clydesdale making a mark in this country considering the traditions they just sold out. But I liked it.
  • Race to Witch Mountain Meh. The Rock in a kiddie movie. Don't go in the pimped out fridge!
  • Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen OMGBARGLEDROOL. Can't wait.
  • Careerbuilder.com It was kind of stupid, repetitive, but I shocklaughed when they punched the koala.
  • Coke: Insect Swarm This was an awesome commercial. Beautiful and just fucking enjoyable to watch. The feel-good commercial of the year!
  • Jack in the Box JACK WAS HIT BY A BUS OHNOE. Nifty aside: One of my friends out in Pasadena saw this commercial being filmed.
  • Coke Zero: Mean Joe Green Parody FUCKING HILARIOUS. Loved it!
  • Cash for Gold Eh. It was ok. Local news had it in their top 10. I think they just couldn't fill it with only Bud and Coke ads.

Wait... Al Michaels just used the word alacrity... Does the average football watcher know what that means? Shit. I don't remember the context. I don't even know if he used it properly now. Ok, continuing....

  • Taco Bell: Expectations Yeah. I'm gonna take a hot babe to Taco Bell to impress her. But when you set the bar that high where do you take her for a second date?
  • GE: Scarecrow Another just beautiful commercial. Coke and GE for prettiest commercials!
  • GE: Wind Energy Cute commercial, kid used wind that he "catches" to blow out his grandpa's candles. Very cute and it's for wind energy, yay!
  • Pepsi: MacGruber FAIL FAIL FAIL. Seriously. They couldn't get Richard Dean Anderson to be McGyver? And that was the best fucking thing they could come up with? Really? Terrible! Worst commercial of the year. Seriously.
  • Bud Light Lime: Summer State of Mind I liked it. It was a fun commercial.

That's not all but the others were local or just forgettable.

Anyway, the top 10 commercials!
10) GE: Scarecrow
9) Priceline: Bill Shatner
8) SoBe 3D
7) Cheetos: Pigeon Attack
6) Transformers: Return of the Fallen
5) Coke: Insect Swarm
4) Budweiser: Fetch
3) Bud Light: Sweden
2) Doritos: Crystal Ball
1) Coke Zero: Mean Joe Green

My joke of the night: You know why Kurt Warner can't throw a Hail Mary?

He's not one of those heathen Catholic Mary-worshippers!

MVP: Santonio Holmes of THE Ohio State Buckeyes!

Way to go Steelers!!! Jen and I were probably the only St. Louisian's rooting for you! Woot! For those not living here, there's been a lot of Cardinals are the ex-StL team and Warner is the ex-StL QB talk all over St. Louis. Some weird sort of fannish claim. For some reason the Steelers are my "Not-Rams" team to root for. Don't know why, but hey if people can root for the Big Red because they are a former StL team with a former StL QB then I can claim I'm rooting for the Steelers because Pittsburgh steel is what was used to build the Arch. See, they have a StL connection too!
