It's been a long couple of weeks since I've written. For whatever reason, October flew by and I was extremely busy the entire time. I didn't get a goddamn thing written for my novel, but I have a new plan for November. So far I have 20,000 words, which is the first section. NaNoWriMo just started (National Novel Writing Month, where you try to write a 50,000 word novel in the month of November), so I signed up. I know I'm not totally following the rules, but I'm going to use it as motivation to write 50,000 more words this month, with the goal that I'll finish up the last 20,000 or so in December. And then I will have my first completed novel before the new year is out. Definitely an exciting goal.
Speaking of goals, moving (and the related issue of employment) is just as confusing as ever. I started to make some (at least intellectual) moves to get the ball rolling on moving to Chicago or Milwaukee in the spring, but for a variety of reasons, that is absolutely not happening now. At least not to Milwaukee anyway. The least said about that, the better.
I have been away the last two weekends, which were absolutely action packed. Two weeks ago I took a road trip to New England. I spent Thursday night through Saturday afternoon in Providence visiting friends. We spent all of Friday walking around Swan Point cemetery and then visiting other Lovecraft landmarks. Saturday we drove down the coast to Fort Wetherill, an old abandoned fort designed to protect the coast against Nazis (I believe). It was one of the most beautiful places I've seen in a long time. We essentially spend the day climbing up and down the cliffs. Saturday night we had dinner in Boston and had a lazy night with some old friends from grad school. I miss that city a lot, but the life I had there seems so different from my life now. Worlds collided. We had brunch in Boston then drove an hour or so north to Plum Island, to spend the afternoon with my uncle and have dinner. We missed Providence so much that we drove all the there from Plum Island and spent the night in the recording studio with some of our friends, which was amazing to watch, even though we were only there for the tail end of it.
This past weekend I made a snap decision to go to Baltimore. I was supposed to go to the 24 hour horror fest, where I have gone every year for the past four years, but I needed a break. And, as my best friend lives in Baltimore, that is generally where I go when I need to escape. Saturday morning it snowed, which made me incredibly happy despite my utterly useless windshield wipers that almost prevented me from making the drive. We lounged on the couch for awhile, watching crime drama, like we do. I got dinner with a friend, then watched The Great Pumpkin, which is a yearly tradition of mine. Then I got ready for a costume party where I dressed as King Diamond. I generally don't like parties and this time offered to be the designated driver, but it was fun and great just to be in Baltimore. Sunday I spent most of the day getting tattooed, but wound up staying the night again and brought in Halloween watching Count Duckula. As it should be.
As far as the job front is concerned, I'm still very strongly considering getting a TEFL certification, but I think I need some guidance. I can either take a class or get certified online, but I would rather do which ever gives me more job opportunities. I've always wanted to live a year or two abroad and I feel like if I don't take the opportunity now, I never will.
This week I've been exhausted, partly because of my constant travelling and partly because I stupidly spaced a flu shot and a large tattoo within two or three days of one another, so bed awaits.
