The rhythmic thunking of blade in wood sounded through the clearing around their den. It was early in the day, but Kuronue didn't feel like going to sleep. His mind was too busy thinking about too many subjects to close his eyes. His aim today was terrible, but that was mainly accounted for by the fact that he wasn't really focused on what he was doing for once.
His mind, instead, had planted itself rather firmly on one particular silver fox. Or rather, one should say the lack there of. It had been three days now since they had last seen each other. It had always been habit of Kurama's to go to a town after a heist and spend some of his riches in the local bars, but he had always insisted on Kuronue's joining in the fun.
Lately, however, his attentiveness had began to wane more and more readily to the new faces he would meet on every outing. And each trip they ended up taking to the random pubs and inns, it seemed the stay would elongate just that much more. Kuronue was not blind, he could see what these signs were leading to, and that's why his core was slowly breaking.
The previous two times they had gone out, Kuronue had simply up and left when the youko wandered up the stairs, making his way on his own back to their den where they lived. But this time he hadn't even waited so long, he had simply gotten up when Kurama's attention went elsewhere and exited the building. He had waited on the outskirts of town for nearly two hours on the off chance that Kurama would notice his lack of presence and come looking for him, but no one had ever came and Kuronue eventually went home.
He was mad at the silver youkai in many ways, but at the same time there had been no promise, and it was only is own fool heart that kept insisting that they would one day share the love he felt so strongly. But the truth of the matter was that Kurama had grown tired of him, and was now moving on to look for the next toy to play with.
That's why when the missing kitsune finally made his appearance nearly an hour later, still smelling of old alcohol and sex, it only managed to make the dark youkai all the more bitter. “There you are! I was looking everywhere for you.” the confident voice of the king of thieves washed over the clearing, at it's sound the prince's hand slipped and his knife missed the target completely.
Kurama blinked at this, the bat never missed anymore. “Kuronue... you're not injured, are you?”
“What difference would it make if I was?” Kuronue snapped out accusationally.
The plant-wielder took a step back in surprise. “What?”
“It's not like you would know. You've been off acting like a slut these last few days. You di--”
Kuronue was cut short by the fist connecting with his jaw and went sprawling to the ground. “What. Did. You. Just. Call. Me?” the tone was quiet, growling, and hardly even resembling the usual casual tones that made the bat's core flutter with anticipation.
Cobalt eyes flashed full of fear as a childhood of horror came rushing back to him. Outlined by the sun, the youko's seven-plus feet was suddenly terrifying. The dark youkai slunk back instinctively before the pain in his cheek radiated to his core and he was overcome with a deep depression. “What does it matter,” he murmured so softly that the silver ears had to stand on end just to catch his words, “we're over, anyway...” he admitted in defeat.
Kuronue pushed himself up, his wings drooping, his head hanging, his shoulders sagged. He walked deliberately back to the den, not once even glancing in the confused youko's direction.
“O-oi! Where are you going?!”
“To bed. It's the middle of the day, I'm tired.” the sonic youkai stated as he slipped into the darkness of their den.
“Hey, hold on! Just a minute!” Kurama hurried after his apprentice, still trying to piece together what it was that had gotten into the younger youkai's head this time. Just what did he mean 'we're over'?! By the time he got to the mouth of the cave, all he saw was the rustling of the curtain that hung as a barrier to Kuronue's private room. Setting his jaw he marched over and started talking before he even got to the cloth divider. “Kuronue! Don't think you can just hide away in there. We're talking about this--” Kurama blinked when he pulled the hanging fur aside and found an empty room. “--now?”
Kuronue looked up from the crack between his wings, still sniffling to himself, and replied with a moody “What's there to talk about?”
Vulpine ears swivelled this way and that, as if attempting to pinpoint the source of a noise. “Where... are you?” he asked in confusion.
“What are you talking about? I'm right here.” Kuronue shifted his wings in order to stand up, causing Kurama to jump in surprise. “What's wrong with you? You didn't come back drunk, did you?”
“Why you... not a chance. You honestly weren't there a moment ago!” Kurama argued. “How did you do it?”
“I haven't the slightest idea what you're talking about.” Kuronue insisted, wrapping his wings around himself once more and turning his head away.
“Eh?!” he heard the silver haired youkai exclaim. “It can't be... I can hear you, and smell you... you're definitely there, but why can't I see you?” the fox walked forward, his hands extended until he came in contact with something leathery and warm. “Your wings...? Kuronue, move your wings.”
“Why?”
“Just do it.” the plant master barked, and moodily the bat youkai did as he was told. “That... is really cool. When you wrap your wings around yourself like that, you fade into the shadows... do you have any idea how useful this will be?” the hungry expression in the golden eyes at the possibilities dulled at the deadpanned look he was receiving. He momentarily noted how cute the pout to the dark one's lips was as he asked “What?”
“I'm still upset at you.” came the monotone reply.
“For what?!” Kurama demanded, automatically falling back into the defensive.
“For the audacious way in which you chose to all out lie to me. And such an obvious lie at that. Really, the nerve of some people! I'm not wanting to look at you right now, so just get out.” the sonic youkai insisted haughtily as he pointed to the door with his left hand and gave a small stomp of frustration with his right. If the scene wasn't so confusing, Kurama would have found it down right adorable.
As it was, though, the only thing he could do was argue back in his own defence. “What are you talking about? I didn't lie to you!”
“Yes you did! You said you had been looking for me, but I've been here alone for three days and two nights and you come back here smelling like sex... but you weren't looking for me at all! You were off finding pleasure with the village whores! You didn't care... at all... that I left...” the wings had wrapped back around their master to hide his pain from golden eyes, but the choked sound of the accusing voice and the broken breathing and sniffles was more than sufficient to alert the greater thief that his apprentice was in tears.
Feeling oddly self-conscious in the way that only the tears of someone you know can cause, the silver youkai felt the need to explain himself. “I-I didn't realize when you left... I thought you had gone up to a room with someone. It wasn't until the next night when I couldn't find you that I...” He trailed off, rubbing his right ear as he did so-a nervous habit from his kit-hood that he only ever did when he felt guilty over something.
“I never go up with anyone!” Kuronue informed sounding all too hurt that his beloved hadn't realized this by now, but at least the tears had stopped for the moment.
“You... don't? But-then what have you been doing all these times that we've been celebrating?”
“Drinking some sake and then going to bed.”
“...Eh?”
His wings pulled apart and the bat stepped forward, intent to get his meaning across by looking Kurama dead in the eye, clinging unconsciously to him in the desperate attempt to hold on to a dream that seemed so sure of slipping away. “Don't you get it? I don't want sex with strangers! The only one I want touching me is you! I love you...” Seeming to have lost his sudden burst of conviction, Kuronue leaned against the broad chest of his unrequited love interest. When he spoke again, it was barely a whisper to the hollow of the youko's collarbone. “But that doesn't matter anymore, huh? I'm too late to win your love. You've already gotten bored of me, and are looking for a new companion to share your bed...”
Kurama let them stay like that as he thought over what Kuronue was saying. He vaguely registered the wet on his chest to be silent tears of one who has resided themselves to heartbreak. Finally coming to a decision after several minutes of contemplating, he realized his arms had come by their own accord to hold the slightly smaller man to himself. Brushing the reaction off as habit-he did have an awful lot of people pressed against his chest, Kuronue one of the most frequent-for it was far too early in the game to contemplate what other reasons he would have to hold this one who claims the most passionate love for him, he removed one of his hands and hooked a finger below the prince's chin.
When cobalt eyes met his searchingly, longingly, he gave one of his rare tender smiles. “You idiot...” he amended softly, “how could I grow bored of such a puzzling person?” brushing their lips together in a final moment of tenderness, he pulled away and walked to the door. Before going through, he glanced over his shoulder and said, “Get some sleep, Kuronue, I'll see you in the evening.” and with that he let the flap fall behind him and headed to bed himself.
