RIP to "The Overweight Lover"

Well, we found our number 3 (Celeb deaths happen in 3's, 1st being Andy Rooney, then Joe Frazier.) I was kinda into Rap and Hip Hop back in the 80s (I blame my uncle since he was an amateur DJ) so I have some memories of Heavy D who died yesterday at the age of 44. I remember the first tune I heard from Heavy D:

(of course I wouldn't learn that that was sampled from an old funk song of the same name until many years later)

Of course, there were other hits from Heavy D and the Boyz, like Now that We Found Love, but if you watched In Living Color back in the early 90s, you're probably familiar with the opening theme . . . by Heavy D and the Boyz!

And who could forget the "special version" of Janet Jackson's "Alright" which featured Heavy D (as well as luminaries like Cyd Charise and Cab Calloway.)

Hell, I even remember that episode of The Cosby Show spinoff, A Different World where he guest starred.

So while I wasn't the biggest fan of the man, I do have some fairly fond memories of him. RIP Mr. Big Stuff.

music, rip
