Lady
When you're with me I'm smiling
Give me all your love
Your hands build me up when I'm sinking
Touch me and my troubles all fade
--"Lady", Styx
Listening to NJ101.5 on the way home from the gym last night. The host on the show was this woman and she brought up a interesting topic something to the effect of that she doesn't like to be referred to as a "Lady." She'd much rather be referred to as one of those old, "Frank Sinatra-era" (as she called it) terms like "Dame" or "Skirt." Even in the recent film/comic adaptation Sin City females in that film were referred to "Dames" often. Even Bugs Bunny once said "That's the trouble with some dames . . . kiss 'em and they fall apart."
She also liked the term "Broad" for some reason XD
Now this kinda got me since I usually refer to females as "Ladies" since "woman" is too generic and "girl" don't make sense if the female is over 20 or so. I always equated it to like royalty as it is equal to a "Lord" in British parlance from what I remember. Plus, how many great songs were made using said term? The aforementioned "Lady" by Styx, Jimi Hendrix's "Foxy Lady", Lou Rawls' "Lady Love", The Commodores' "Three Times a Lady"
But I also remember that one of my female LJ friends didn't take well to being called a "Lady" either. Perhaps it is too often equated with people saying someone is an "old lady" or that it is an oft used name for a dog?
There are worse terms that I hear guys toss about openly that piss me off like "bitches" and "ho's" and whatnot. Talk about derogatory!!
In any case, just for the helluvit, I wanna get a feel for which of these terms those on my f-list (the womens especially) think is most acceptible. Plus, leave any suggestions you see fit . . .
