Pondering matters World Rally...

Why am I such the Sebastian Loeb anti-fan? It doesn't matter to me who wins as long as it's not him. Fifty four career rally wins and six world championships should tell you the man has some skill. I am by no means the rally super-fan. I have not, for example, ever appeared in the background of a picture in a rallying publication in which Petter Solberg waves my giant Subaru flag about. I have no reason to care as much as I do, but for whatever reason, whenever I watch the '09 WRC coverage on HD Theater I am filled with a desire to see this Frenchman meet with disaster. I have a need to see him overcook a turn and take a one-way trip down an embankment. This may speak a few unkind words as regard to my character.

It was nice to see him down in the rankings on day one of Rally Portugal. Especially since he was behind Marcus Grönholm who was sporting a shiny new Prodrive Subaru WRX no less. Marcus was holding the number four slot on day two as well. Who knows how well he would've done if he hadn't clipped that tree. Damned if Seb didn't manage to crawl all the way back to the top by the end though. It might have been a different story though if Latvala hadn't decided to roll his Focus down a hill seventeen times. Seb blew a turn in the second stage costing him 18 seconds, so he's by no means infallible, but maybe he's just too good. Perhaps it's just human nature to see such a well functioning machine and wonder what would happen if a monkey wrench happened to fall in the works.

I don't buy into the general dislike of all things French that seems to be the trend in America the past few years. I just don't really get it. This was the country after all that played a key, if not crucial, role in the revolutionary war. They did go into debt to the tune of over three billion tournois to help us out. "Because it's French" has never been a good reason with me. Except for here, with a French man driving a French car who is thoroughly trouncing the competition.

Why can't he get up close and personal with a hinkelstein?
