Kaito/Shinichi; In the future you'll fall in love yuulin March 25 2008, 20:15:27 UTC
Kudo Shinichi didn’t believe in magic. As a detective, he prided himself on always being right, forward, and direct about things. He occasionally found spectacles excessive, which earned him a shout of “Shin-chan, don’t be boring!” from his mother even. All that said, he definitely, absolutely most definitely, did not believe in silly things like fortune telling-which incidentally happened to be Kaito’s new phase of interest (not that these phases always lasted very long).

“Come here, Shinichi,” Kaito proclaimed cheerfully, patting the stool in front of him that was all to close for comfort. Smiling widely, he proceeded to produce a deck of cards-from…his sleeve? Shinichi hadn’t really been paying attention-and shuffle them in an overly flashy way. “I’ll tell your fortune for free! Life, love, work; the cards know all!”

Shinichi hardly spared him a glance over the top of his book from where he lay, sprawled elegantly across a couch in his mansion’s study. Idly flipping a page, he remained silent for a long moment, before promptly stating, “No.”

The response, or lack thereof, prompted Kaito to shoot him a dramatically distraught expression, reminiscent of a puppy being booted out of its house. But if anything, Kaito was good at being stubborn, and if Shinichi refused to come to him, there was only one probable solution as a response. A devious smile slipped over the magician’s lips as he casually slinked over to the other boy, taking the plainly negative response as an invitation.

He then proceeded to squeeze himself onto the couch next to Shinichi’s head, mutely offering his leg as a pillow. Of course, Shinichi was his usual no-nonsense self and directed a pointed frown up at the suspiciously smiling teen. The detective stiffly adjusted to the space accommodation after a long few moments of resistance. Curiosity finally striking in, he asked, “…what are you up to, Kaito?”

“Spoiling you?” was the sickeningly sweet answer.

Shinichi rolled his eyes and continued reading. So be it. If Kaito didn’t want to answer, he wouldn’t ask. His antics often had no plausible purpose anyway, the idiot.

After a long period of silence (the only sound that disturbed them was the crisp turning of pages as Shinichi read), Kaito finally spoke up with a grin, “I don’t need cards to read your fortune. I’m psychic, so I already know your future.”

At that, Shinichi resisted the urge to snort and laugh. Kaito knew he was a skeptic; he should have expected that as a perfectly reasonable response to that statement. That is, if Shinichi actually did. There was that strange, mysterious quality twinkling in Kaito’s eyes again that made the detective mildly curious as to what he might have meant. He even paused in reading, lowering his book a good inch to gaze up at the other teen.

In absolute radiant cheer, Kaito nimbly fished the book from Shinichi’s hands and tossed it over his shoulder. The other teen made a concerned noise and a scowl at that, but was immediately silenced by Kaito’s closer looming face.

The intensity of Kaito’s gaze made Shinichi flush against his will. He forced a twitching frown on his face to mask the effect before asking awkwardly, “W-What?”

“In the future, you’ll fall in love.”

The statement would have sounded ridiculous coming from anyone else and under any other circumstances. But coming from Kaito and given the situation they were presently in, Shinichi found his mind drawing a blank and his face flushing even more in anger-shrouded embarrassment.

It’s too late for that, idiot.

Those words never managed to escape his lips before they were sealed by another pair of lips. Shinichi accepted the ridiculous fortune for now, but that did not at all mean he believed in magic. Not at all.

(Damn Kaito.)
