Cutting the engine of his car, he stepped out of the small vehicle, the heel of his shoe firmly coming in contact with the asphalt.
The automatic doors of the large, pristine building invited him in as he made his way through the familiar hallways.
Left.
Right.
Straight.
He was there.
“Good Morning, Yokoo-san,” the nurse, Koyama Keiichiro greeted him from behind his station, “How did you sleep last night?”
Barely making eye contact with the man, Yokoo smiled warily as he busied himself with the objects in his bag, “As well as anyone else. How was he last night?”
“Same as always. He did mention something about going on a trip with Shige-san, though.”
This time he did look up at the nurse, flashing a forced smile while giving him a nod. The younger slowly and evenly walked towards his next destination, though, he didn’t quite make it.
Upon reaching the door to the room, through a small crack, Yokoo could hear the loud voices of Ryo’s closest friends. Twitching at the volume, he squeezed himself in, trying not to draw attention to him.
“And then Pi whips out his phone, calls the guy and leaves him speechless. It would have been so much better if you were there, I can’t even begin to tell you how funny that ‘I- just- shat- my-pants’ look on Junno’s face was,” naturally it would be Akanishi Jin who was the loudest, telling his story with more excitement then necessary.
Ryo’s laughter didn’t fill the room along with Jin’s. This caused Yokoo to take a step forward, nearly making his presence known but he ceased any further movement once Ryo’s raspy voice spoke out.
“That’s alright, I’m sure Taguchi-san was humiliated enough without having his boss sitting there laughing at him too,” Ryo gave them one of his horrible fake smiles.
“What the fuck, Ryo-chan! All this time in this room has made you crazier than you already are. You gotta get outta here. Work isn’t the same without you! Ueda’s starting to piss me off, the man thinks he’s the boss and shit. The fairy needs to learn his place!”
“Why haven’t you gone to talk with Shige about it then? I’m sure he’ll settle your petty arguments if you asked him nicely,” Ryo said, reaching for his cellphone and opening up the blue cover only to close it again.
Silence hung in the air.
“But Ryo-chan Shige--” Jin started again, only to find himself stopping mid-sentence. He turned around to see Yokoo, hand gently placed on his shoulder offering him a sour smile. Squeezing between the two, he forced his way over to a stunned Ryo.
Taking the stool from underneath the bed, where he had left it the previous day, he set his large tote to the ground. Pulling out a piece of fruit a knife, he slowly began to peal it, as if nothing was out of the ordinary.
“Good Morning, Wataa,” Ryo greeted, offering his long time friend and housekeeper a gentle smile.
Yokoo smiled back, “Good Morning.”
“I hate to say it, but I was getting a little worried when Pi and Bakanishi showed up before you. Over sleep?”
“A little, but I’m alright, nothing to concern yourself about.”
Ryo chuckled.
“So, I spoke with Koyama-san this morning and he said that Kamenashi-kun ratted you out again.”
“Ugh! Don’t get me started on that bastard. I wish he’d take a pill already and fall asleep,” Ryo grumbled as he popped a piece of the apple into his mouth.
“It’s not his fault. It’s unfair of you to be upset about it.”
“I know, but I wish he’d mind his own god damn business.”
The two laughed lightly only to have their attention caught unexpectedly by a loud cough.
“Yes? Is there something you need, Akanishi-kun, or can I go back to being helpful?” Yokoo asked with a blank look in his eyes.
Jin’s eyes narrowed in return, “We’ll get going then. Unlike some people, we keep a schedule.”
Yokoo offered a dark stare, while Ryo nodded, shoving another piece of fruit into his mouth.
“Oh! One more thing,” Yokoo called, just as Jin was about to walk out the door, “Regarding your problem with Ueda-san, I suggest you suck it up and deal with it yourself. I don’t want to have to deal with your petty shit on top of everything else.”
Jin huffed as he dragged Yamashita out of the room and down the hall, leaving the door to slam closed behind them.
“I still don’t understand how you can be friends with someone like him,” Yokoo said, taking a deep breath and sitting back against the side table.
“I could ask you the same thing about your friends, but the relationship with Fujigaya-kun is none of my business.”
“At least Gaya isn’t that loud or self-centered,” Yokoo mumbled as he got up from his seat to wash his sticky hands.
All the while as the water rushed, Ryo hummed to himself a tune. A tune that Yokoo knew well. So well, that without even realizing it, he began to hum along. This caused that thousand watt grin to appear on Ryo’s face.
“It’s nice to see you smile,” he said, drying his hands with a paper towel and taking his seat once more.
“Have I not been smiling?”
“Well, not like that. You only ever smile like that when you think of Shige-kun.”
Ryo frowned upon mention of his lover’s name all the while crinkling the bed sheets in his hands, “I wish he’d come visit already, don’t you think he’s holed himself at work long enough?”
Yokoo said nothing, only stared blankly at his friend.
“When you go home tonight, please tell him I want to see him.”
Yokoo remained unchanged, making no indication of acknowledging Ryo’s request.
“Wataru? Did you hear me, I said--”
“Ryo, Shige isn’t at home. He hasn’t been home in a while.”
“Oh? Where is he?”
“He’s--”
“Ah! Wait, don’t tell me! I already know. I’ll just call him at work!” Flipping open the blue phone, Ryo hit number 2 on his speed dial.
That’s when he heard the familiar melody fill the small room.
Ryo quizzically watched Yokoo while the song he associated so distinctly with Shige sounded from the deep bag the younger man was carrying.
Once the device closed, so did the song.
Ryo tried again, only to have the results be the same. Grabbing for the large tote, the contents of Yokoo’s bag went flying across the room until Ryo found what he was looking for.
“Why do you have Shige’s phone? Where is he?”
Yokoo took a deep sigh, hands trembling, “Shige passed away in the accident. His body was crushed under the weight of the car while trying to save your life. I’m sorry I didn’t tell you sooner, but I didn’t want you to do something drastic and put all of Shige’s effort in vain.”
Silence hung heavily in the air.
“Get out,” Ryo almost inaudibly demanded of Yokoo. Immediately, he did what he was asked, taking his belongings with him as he practically bolted out of the room. He didn’t want to get in the crossfire of an angry Ryo. That would be like sticking one’s head into the oven out of curiosity. A near death experience.
Unfortunately, on his way down the hallway, Yokoo ran into Koyama, who was on his way to Ryo’s room. Giving the worker a half smile along with a worried looked, he continued on his way only to hear the nurse’s footfalls sped up.
3 months later
“Do you have everything, Ryo?” Yokoo asked from the doorway of the hospital room.
“Yes,” he answered, dressed in his signature t-shirt, jeans and leather jacket. Though, a cane did securely sit under the palm of his right hand.
Yokoo waited patiently as Ryo slowly made his way towards him. The younger carried all of his employer’s belongings while Ryo focused strictly on putting one foot in front of the other.
As they passed by the nurses’ station on their way out, Koyama gave them his wishes. Gratefully accepting them, the two kept walking until they reached the automatic doors and left the building once and for all.
The two walked slowly towards Yokoo’s car, said owner a few steps behind Ryo in case the man tripped. But there was no additional accident and Ryo entered the car with little assistance.
“Thank you,” Ryo spoke upon closing the door and snapping his seatbelt in.
“It’s my job, so it’s not a problem,” Yokoo replied, starting the engine and shifting into reverse.
“No, I meant for saving my life.”
Slamming on the break, Yokoo pulled back into the parking spot and cutting the engine, “Excuse me?”
“Sure, I feel guilty and will be traumatized by my actions but at least you were honest with me. You allowed me to get better. You’ve also taken care of my company and my home while I’ve been gone. No money in the world will be able to compensate for how much you’ve done for me.”
Yokoo leaned back in his seat as he reached out his hand to touch Ryo’s cracking skin, “All the compensation I need is knowing that you’ll be here tomorrow.”
Ryo smirked, “Please, I couldn’t leave everything to you. Someone has to wake you up in the morning.”
Starting the car again and fully pulling out of the parking space, the two said goodbye to a life they no longer lived, with a bright smile towards the future.
