The Up Up And Away Restoration Project: Boiling
I did this several weeks ago, but didn't do a writeup because I AM LAZY.
But here we are.
Prior to bleaching, I decided to boil Up, Up and Away to get rid of some of the mold inside of her.
First I decapitated her. D: Oh no, poor pony. Ah well. I also took out her tail and set it aside.
You might be able to tell from the photo that her body is a slightly different colour from the head. I didn't notice this until I had her wrinsed off a bit. Actually, her entire ND side is discoloured like that. It probably happened because of the way she was set down. Anyway, it isn't noticeable in real life unless you're looking for it, so I don't care much. Her display side looks fine.
Next I wrinsed her out with warm water and soap, to try to get rid of as much mold as possible before boiling. I wrinsed her out a couple times. A good amount did come out, but there was a lot of mold in there still. D:
Then I plunked her in a pot of boiling water and stirred her around for a bit. My main aim here was to get rid of the pin dot mold in her NDS front foot. So what I did was boiled her, took her out using tongs, scratched away at the mold using a fingernail, then boiled her again, and repeat.This process ended up getting rid of almost all the mold on the outside. Unfortunately I forgot to take an "after" picture of that area.
After photos of the inner body and inner head. As you can see, boiling it got rid of a LOT of the mold. Here are the "before" pictures for reference:
Even though it got rid of a lot of the mold, there was still a lot of it down inside the legs. So the next job was to bleach the pony.
Unfortunately I don't have the photos from that particular escapade uploaded, so I'll have to end the entry here. =p
So, the next one will involve experiments with bleaching, and also the removal of tail rust.
