Holy crap, guys. Nobody told me that A Girl Walks Home Alone At Night (2014) had such awesome cinematography.
I mean, yes, that's not the only cool thing about it. But it isn't what I was expecting. This film was sold to me as "Iranian horror movie with a skateboarding vigilante vampire". And... it is that, if you're of the opinion that a film is in the horror genre by default if it includes people getting killed by supernatural monsters.
But that description, while superficially accurate, makes the film sound a lot more cracktacular than it actually is. It's more of an art film, really. There are moments of The Girl doing her vampire thing, but I feel this film is rather low in terms of actual horror content. It's more like... a moody, beautifully-shot film in which two lonely people meet and one of them just happens to be a vampire. Someone looking for a more standard horror-genre vampire movie might be disappointed, especially in terms of pacing; this isn't paced like a usual 21st-century horror film. But someone who enjoys both horror and artsy stuff will probably like it a lot.
It's good, certainly, but I wasn't exactly expecting "What if Ingmar Bergman made a vampire movie?". Heh.
Wasn't kidding when I said it's beautifully shot, though. Simply gorgeous film. It's in black and white, and they really use that medium to its full potential. Lots of strong blacks and strategic use of lighting and you can just tell that the way it was shot was really well thought out. Nice. <3
