Reading Wednesday

Finished reading: Guards! Guards! by Terry Pratchett. The first introduction to the Watch! And a reminder of why I loved the Watch novels, which is good, because my affection for Vimes in particular waned a lot with Snuff. But I'll talk more about that novel when I get to it (hopefully sometime this year).

You know, when I was in high school, I had a ridiculous crush on Carrot. Well, to the extent that one can crush on a fictional person, I guess. And now I remember why. He's just so... friendly and helpful, and by-the-book in a way that's funny and driven by goodwill rather than annoying and stuffy, I suppose. Anyway, still fond of him here. I guess teenage me didn't have bad taste. ;p

This isn't my favourite Watch novel, though - probably that one would be Jingo or Feet of Clay, though it's hard to be sure. I'm not quite sure why, but I had trouble getting engaged with the whole dragon thing. Used to be a big fan of dragons, but not any more, really. Though I did enjoy seeing the Watch try to arrest it.

Currently reading: The Guns of August by Barbara W Tuchman. I've been in a very WWI mood lately (and I partly blame
dhampyresa for indulging me ;p ) so I figured I might as well read this one now, especially since I've been meaning to read more nonfiction. I haven't actually cracked it open yet - will do so today - but I'm looking forward to it because the author also wrote A Distant Mirror, a book about the 14th century which I really enjoyed, though it took a bit of reading before I actually got into it. It's an old book - first written in 1962 - so I'm prepared to keep that in mind while I read it, but I fully expect that I'll find it engaging at the very least.

Reading next: Next in the Discworld series is Eric, so I'll probably read that, unless I get distracted by something else.

Other stuff: I've now finished 25 books (list so far is here). Only 25 more to go! /o/
