Chapter Two
It hurts. It really hurts! How could he do this to me, after everything I’ve done, after everything we’ve been together?
Iwata Sayuri sat on the bench, her head in her hands, trying to forget the scene that had her fleeing to this secluded, peaceful place in the Nakajima Riding Club.
“I want to break up, Sayuri.”
My head snapped up when I heard that phrase spoken by my boyfriend, Hashimoto Ryosuke. At first, I just stared at his face. He always pulled pranks at me, so I thought that he might be joking. I gave off a careless little laugh. “What are you talking about?”
“Continuing this relationship is a bad idea.” His eyes were unreadable, emotionless. I felt my eyes water. “It’s not working out anymore.”
“But why? Did I do something wrong?” I asked, and I didn’t bother keeping my tears in check. They were already flowing fast down my cheeks. Hasshi can’t do this to me. We’ve been together for three years. Three years has been the longest a guy has been with me, and I had it all planned out already - why was he changing his mind so fast? Why does he want to break up?
He sighed, as if trying to collect his thoughts. “I’m in love with someone. But I’m not in love with you.”
“What, wait, Hasshi- ”
But before I could speak, a familiar, sickly sweet voice interrupted my thoughts.
“Hasshi-kun!” a tall, raven-haired young woman approached us. This person, I knew very well. This person… she’s my stepsister.
I opened my mouth to demand what she was doing there, but that was until she bent over to kiss Hasshi on the mouth.
I didn’t need them to explain it all to me. Or maybe I did. But my body acted on its own, I stood up and ran the hell out of that place. I couldn’t bear it.
So he chose her after all.
She was still thinking when this guy sat on the bench beside her. He smelled of drink, but he didn’t look drunk. Maybe he has had too much into his system, but definitely not drunk.
They sat in silence, and Sayuri thought that they fit together almost perfectly. Two crying people sitting on the same bench. It was almost too funny.
“Got dumped?” The man asked, voice thick. It was pretty evident that he has been crying.
Sayuri sniffed, then cleared her throat. “Yeah, you could say that.”
“Man got another?”
Sayuri nodded morosely. “Yeah.”
“Same,” he said. He looked down on his shoes. “We’re two very stupid people, don’t you think? Letting those people take our hearts just to have them trampled upon.”
“It’s not entirely our fault, though. The world is filled with people who take people like us for granted,” Sayuri said as she stared at the sky. “He found someone much better than I am, I suppose. The fact that it’s my own stepsister is the one that hurts the most.” She sighed. “Nobody ever chose me over her. I ever thought that he’d be one of the many others who’d readily choose her over me.”
“Well, in my case, she has always been in love with another man. Whatever I do, it will never be enough for her to forget about him.” Takaki said. He looked up and turned to Sayuri. “I’m TakakiYuya. What’s your name?”
“Iwata Sayuri,” Sayuri said as he turned to Takaki. “Boy. Aren’t we the worse losers in the world.”
“Heh. You’re right,” Takaki grinned. It was a melancholic type of grin. “I guess it’s fate that brought us together right now.”
Sayuri’s eyes snapped up to meet his. Those eyes were filled with so much sadness, and Sayuri felt like whatever wretchedness she was feeling right now, it didn’t compare to whatever he was feeling. She felt protective all of a sudden. She wanted to make everything all right for this man again.
“Takaki-kun,” she said softly. “Is there anything I could do to make you feel all right?”
The flash of brokenness in his eyes was enough for her to give in when reached for her and kissed her deeply. Maybe she was stupid for falling this easily, but, if it brought the light back to the eyes of this man, then, it would be worth it after all.
---
They finished with a cry, and Takaki rolled back on the grass. He could still feel her smooth skin in his hands, along his body and against his thighs.
He looked over to the girl beside her and watched her catch her breath. She looked lovely.
“You said nobody ever chose you over your stepsister,” he said as he rolled back and kissed her gently on the forehead. “I think, if I were made to choose, I’d pick you.”
They locked eyes. Then, Takaki stood up and helped Sayuri back into her clothes, before walking away.
---
When Takaki got back, it seemed like nobody noticed his absence. He sighed in relief and went to the lounge, and, upon finding a vacant chair, he sat down heavily. He was feeling very languid, like he always did after intercourse, and he almost fell asleep when Chinen bounced over to where he was sitting.
“Where’ve you been? I looked for you downstairs but I saw only Hikaru there, drunk as fuck. I would have thought you knew Hikaru’s the weakest when it came to alcohol.”
Takaki groaned as he turned his sleepy eyes away from the younger boy.
“Gee, Takaki. You got laid, didn’t you?” Chinen asked, wide-eyed. Takaki turned his head towards the younger boy.
“Ha??” Takaki asked. “How would you know that?”
“You smell like sex, man.” Chinen grinned as he perched on the arm of the chair.
“How are you supposed to even smell sex? Besides, dude, aren’t you too young to know about sex?” Takaki grumbled as he turned away.
“I’m twenty-two years old, Takaki. Don’t act like I’m still fifteen. Daiki’s the forever fifteen one.” Chinen stretched. “So you admit it? You slipped away and got laid?”
“I don’t intend to share the details of my private life with you, Chinen Yuri.”
“Oh! So you admit it! Yuyan’s got laid!” Chinen sang. “Who’s the unlucky girl? Did you remember to use protection?”
Yuya blushed as he swatted Chinen away. He stood up and walked to the upstairs bedrooms. Chinen was terrible when he was inquisitive. “Of course! I’m not that stupid!” Takaki snapped, blushing. He didn’t mention that the two times that they did it on the grass, each condom they used broke on them.
Maybe he should have mentioned to Iwata Sayuri to take morning-after pills or something.
---
“So. I heard from Chinen that you just got laid,” Yabu said as he entered Takaki’s room in the clubhouse. Takaki rolled his eyes and muttered, “Gee, word really does travel fast around here.”Yabu brushed off that comment. “Should I offer my congratulations?”
“Congratulations for what?” Takaki asked, fiddling with his phone as he lay there.
“For finally turning your eyes from Haruna and meeting pastures new?”Yabu asked. Then his eyes widened. “Dude. Don’t tell me you hired… women of a certain type to do your thing. I mean, it’s fine if you did, but I was hoping - ”
“No,” Takaki said, remembering Iwata Sayuri’s pretty, sad face and the way she felt. “She’s…not of a certain type. Seriously. I’m not as desperate as you think I am.”
“Sure you are,” Yabu murmured as he sat in one of the wicker chairs in the room.
“She’s actually a pretty nice girl. But…”
“But?”
“I doubt if she’ll be the one to… you know. Make me forget Haruna.”
Yabu was silent. “Maybe it’s because you haven’t tried yet? Forgetting Haruna, I mean.” Yabu said after a while. “Here you are, mulling over a heart break that is two years old yet you haven’t budged. You’re still waiting for something that is going to happen.”
“She’ll forget Shohei in time. Like you said, Shohei is not right for Elena. How could be right for Haruna?”
“Don’t bring my wife into this, Takaki,” Yabu’s voice was hard, so Takaki shut up. “I might not like those two much, but if there’s one thing that I am sure of, it’s that I know they are sharing something true. Something that you can’t break.Yuyan,” the taller guy sighed, “why not give yourself a break and find the one really suited for you?”
Takaki was silent. Yabu waited for a reply, but Takaki’s mouth was unmoving, lips pressed together in a tight line.
Yabu sighed. “All right. I’ll see you at dinner.”
Yabu left the room. Takaki stared at the ceiling, mulling over his thoughts. He knew Yabu was right, he knew he ought to let go… but he just can’t. For some reason unexplainable.
“I don’t know,” he said. “I don’t know.”
