About: Founded in 1884 in New York City, Brearley is an all-girls’ school that caters to female students from pre-kindergarten to the last year of high school. Brearley is known to be a school with progressive teaching methods. In many polls where the four all-girls’ schools in the Interschool are pitted together, Brearley girls are said to be the most intelligent. Forbes had said that it is the second best prep school in NYC and the best all-girls school in the same city. Brearley is considered to be one of the sister schools of Collegiate School, and fierce rivals with Chapin and Spence Schools. A popular NYC saying goes, “Spence girls date doctors and lawyers, and Chapin girls marry doctors and lawyers, but Brearley girls are doctors and lawyers,” further solidifying the school’s reputation to produce go-getters and excellent students even beyond their stay at the school.
Brearley girls, though having such a stellar academic reputation, are also criticized as having zero to slim social interactions with other students. As they keep to the Brearley crop a lot, they are often stigmatized as lesbians and/or elitists, which they are not. Though it is said that Brearley are in competition with Chapin and Spence, it is with Chapin that they are more competitive with.
Track Record: Graduates from the Brearley School who are now in college are Song Jieun (Cornell University), Song Qian (Harvard University), Choi Sooyoung (Harvard University), Oshima Yuko and Kojima Haruna (Princeton University), and Jung Sooyeon (Yale University).
Student Council: The Brearley girls are currently headed by Bae Joohyun, a twelfth grader. Under her leadership are seven other gifted girls united in bringing order and harmony to the Brearley crop.
