“Ah, it’s raining again.” Okamoto Keito, 15, stated while standing at a shed, waiting for the bus to arrive. True, that he’s going to ride in a bus but after going out of the bus, he still needs to walk before arriving at his house. He easily gets sick if he’s going to walk under the rain. Maybe I’ll just wait until the rain stops… He thought but he doesn’t know when the rain is going to stop. The weather forecast earlier didn’t even say that it’s going to rain so he didn’t bring his umbrella with him.
The bus arrived and Keito went inside. He sat at the back seat and leaned his head on the closed window. He jolted when he heard the noisy drops of rain in the bus and as he looked outside the rain became heavier and heavier.
“Doushiyo?” he asked himself. Then an umbrella appeared in front of him. He looked to where the hand that is holding the umbrella came from and saw a brown haired person, who’s a bit older than him since that person is already wearing a high school uniform.
“Here, you can use this.” The guy said and Keito just looked at him. “Kore, kore.” He swings the umbrella up and down and Keito hesitantly took the umbrella from him.
“T-Thank you.” Keito replied, slightly bowing his head.
“Douita.” He replied and held out his hand. “Yaotome Hikaru.” The guy introduced, smiling, showing his goofy smile together with his imperfect teeth. Keito held unto it and shook it as he say, “Okamoto Keito.”
Their first meeting is not their last one. Every time Keito rode the bus home, he’ll always sit at the back seat and meet Hikaru there. They shared stories about school, and other stuffs about them. 15 minute ride always feel like an hour to them. Hikaru is the first to go off the bus. Whenever they talk, Keito feels something else inside him like how his stomach churns every time Hikaru smiles at him or even he’ll get the slightest contact with Hikaru’s hand.
But above all the meetings, the umbrella that he lent to Keito was never given back to him.
2 months passed since the two met. Sometimes, Hikaru asks Keito to hang out and they always spend their time either watch movies, go to the arcade or he will teach Keito guitar in their house. But one day, Hikaru crossed the line.
It’s just one of those days where Keito goes to Hikaru’s place and learn how to play the guitar. He’s getting busy reading the chord chart when suddenly, Hikaru grabbed his hand and made him face Hikaru.
“I…” Hikaru started. “I don’t think this is the right time for this but…” He looked at Keito’s eyes trying to say that he’s serious with what he’s going to say. “I like you, Keito.”
Keito was stoned in his place, still trying to process everything in his mind. “I don’t know if you’ll really believe me but, I like you ever since I saw your problematic face while looking at the rain that’s why I lent my umbrella to you.” Keito still didn’t say any words. Hikaru smiled… a hurtful one. “I’m sorry about that.” He apologized and let go of Keito’s hand. “You can leave if you want.”
Then what made Hikaru sad is when Keito stood up and left the house.
After what happened, Keito didn’t ride the same bus. He’ll go home late so that he won’t be able to see Hikaru. He’s just surprised with Hikaru’s sudden confession. Actually, he left Hikaru’s house that time because he’s not sure if he feels the same way as Hikaru does. But when Hikaru told him that he likes him, he feels the happiest person in the world.
While waiting for the bus, Keito thought about it. The bus arrived and Keito stepped inside going at the back seat making the person beside him surprised. The ride is silent and Keito tried his hardest not to make his heart pound like crazy and loud. It rained and it’s a heavy one. The guy beside Keito clicked his tongue in annoyance as he scan his bag looking for a particular thing.
Keito offered an umbrella and said, “Here”.
“How about you?” the guy asked knowing that Keito easily gets sick because of the rain.
“Then I’ll walk you home.” Keito stood up when the bus arrive to a certain stop. The guy behind him followed and as he step out of the bus, Keito is already there waiting for him with the opened umbrella. The guy took the umbrella from him telling him that it’s better if he’s going to hold the umbrella since he’s taller than Keito.
Their walk towards his house is a silent one. Droplet of rain in the umbrella and in the road, and only their footsteps can be heard. They arrived at his house and gave Keito the umbrella before leaving but Keito held his hand, stopping him from going.
“Hikaru…” Keito started and the latter looked at him. Children in raincoats are passing at their back together with their parents since Hikaru’s home is near a kindergarten school. “Do you know that the umbrella has other purpose?” Keito asked but Hikaru didn’t reply.
“Come here…” Keito motioned and the latter went closer to Keito like a magnet. Keito loosen his grip to the umbrella making it fall on their heads. He then did something that surprised Hikaru the most.
Keito pulled Hikaru’s uniform and pulled the latter towards him making Hikaru lean against him until their lips met. The noisiness of the children passing by can still be heard but knowing that the umbrella is covering them, Hikaru gave in to the kiss and kissed Keito back.
Pulling away from the kiss, Keito confessed that he also likes Hikaru and was just confused before. Hikaru smiled at him, the smile that Keito always love. The older one asked Keito if he wants to stay for a cup of hot cocoa and Keito nodded.
Hikaru held Keito’s hand and entered his house. He made a hot cocoa for both of them but it was forgotten when Hikaru put the hot cocoa in the table and sat beside Keito and Keito with his hidden aggressiveness, pulled the latter towards him capturing Hikaru’s lips into another kiss and maybe… more than that.
