KEITO'S POV

All I can do is to be happy knowing that my life is just short. I got a congenital heart disease. I’ve been waiting for a donor since I was young but nothing came. It’s simply because searching for a heart donor is not that easy. There are lots of things to be compatible so that it can be transplanted safe. But meeting him is the happiest event that I experienced. By the way, I’m Okamoto Keito, 18 years of age. I’m going to graduate in high school soon. But I hope I’ll be able to. I still got 6 months before I can graduate.

They learned that I have that kind of sickness when I was 7. I was playing with my friends a game of tag when I just suddenly collapsed. I was sent in the hospital and there they knew that I have an illness. But then I met him.

When I was still at the hospital, though I was free to go anywhere as long as I’m in the hospital grounds, I went to a tree behind the hospital and crouch on the grassy land. I was searching for a four-leaf clover that time, hoping that if I found it, my wish to be cured will come true. I’m seriously finding that clover when suddenly I saw a hand picking something on those clovers and said, “Are you looking for this?” I looked at the person above me and the first thing I saw is his imperfect teeth when he smiled. “Sugoi! How did you find that easily?” I asked him still amazed the he got the clover in one pick.

He then crouched beside me and said, “Concentrate on it. Think about the clover and picture it out on your mind. Then if you’ll search for it, just think about that clover, forgetting about your surroundings.” He looked at the bushes of clover and scanned it. He reaches out for something and said, “This one is for you.” He picked another four-leaf clover and I can’t help but be amazed while taking it from him.

“Arigatou gozaimasu!” I said happily then closed my eyes wishing for any possibilities that I can be cured. After wishing, I opened my eyes and saw that the kid is looking at me, smiling, and that actually made me go embarrassed.

“I’m Yaotome Hikaru.” He introduced himself as he held out his hand. I looked at it first before replying, “Okamoto Keito desu.” I grabbed his hand and shook it. When I looked at him, that’s when I realized that his cheeks are puffy. He smiled at me, I smiled back at him and it’s the start of our friendship.

Every afternoon, both of us meet there and tell something about ourselves. That’s when I knew he’s actually 8 years older than me. He said he came from Sendai and maybe that’s the reason why the way he talks is cute. I told him about my illness but that time I didn’t know that it’s quite critical. That it can lead me to death. I just told him that I’m sick and I need a donor but I don’t know that I need a heart donor.

One day, he told me, “You’re going to get a donor soon. I’m sure of that.” And showed his smile. Our meeting lasts for a week since I got weak and was advised to stay at my room. Maybe he still went to our meeting place and because I haven’t showed up for 3 days, he knew something happened because the next day, he visited me. My parents met him and I told them he’s a good friend.

But then after another week, “Keito, we’re leaving tomorrow.” He inquired me stopping me from eating the bunny apples that he made. “Not just a simple leaving in the hospital but we’re leaving Japan.” He added.

“Eh?”

“My sister’s condition is getting better and since she was discharged already 3 days ago, my parents told us that we’re going to America by tomorrow.” It’s visible from his voice that he doesn’t want to go.

“Souka…” The only word that I said.

“I’ll become a doctor.” He started and I looked at him. “In that way, I’ll be able to cure your sickness.”

The next morning, he and I met in the same meeting place. I was crying that time, thinking that my new friend is going far away. He told me not to cry. He told me that he’s still going back in Japan. And in order to stop me from crying and he’s victorious on doing so, he landed his lips on mine and linger it there for about a minute. My tears are still flowing but my sobs can’t be heard. I felt my cheeks burning.

When he pulled away, he cupped my cheeks and pulled my body closer to his. He hugged me and whispered right through my ear, “Aishiteru. I’ll be back for you, I promise. Then after that, we’re going to be together, forever.”

--

11 years had passed since he left and I’m still keeping my promise to wait for him. But I hope he’s also doing the same, keeping his promise to come back for me.

It’s going to be my summer break and I did my best to not to have an extra class to enjoy my summer. And I did. When the results are out, I passed. Not to be boastful, but I ranked first. It was late afternoon already when the exam results for third years was posted in the bulletin board at the 4th floor since 3rd year classrooms are located there.

That afternoon, I was so happy that it’s finally summer break. I can rest all I want. I walked happily going outside the school and went to the hospital first for my check-up.

--

“You’re getting better.” The doctor told me. “Keep it up. Don’t make yourself tired.” I buttoned my uniform and gave my thanks as I bowed down and went out. At least I’m not getting weaker and weaker. I went at the back of the hospital and went to the place I always visits every time I have my check-up. I sat on the grassy field and looked for a four-leaf clover. And there it is, I picked it and wished. I actually mastered the technique for 5 months and every year, I’m getting better and faster for searching for that clover.

While closing my eyes, and wishing to make my life longer, I felt a hand covering my eyes. My wishing stopped and I placed my hand above that person’s hand. “Dare?” I asked.

“Guess.” He said and I stiffened. That Sendai accent. It can’t be… My tears suddenly flowed on its own and I think he felt the wetness of his hand because of my tears and he took his hands off immediately. “Oy, oy, oy. Why are you crying?” He asked me and I turned around. I met his goofy smile and showing his imperfect teeth.

“Tadaima, Keito.” He said and I lounged myself to him. I’m being girly, so what? I miss him. Period. He chuckled and I don’t know why he did. Nevertheless, he wrapped his arms around me. “Miss me that much?” He asked and all I can do is nod and say, “Okaeri Hikaru.”

--

As he and I walked home together he told me that he’s currently in his internship to be a doctor and he really requested to take the internship here in Japan. Well, one of the reasons is because of me. I also knew that his parents and sister died in a car crash a week ago and he’s currently living in his aunt’s place.

“It seems like I’m the one who keeps on talking and talking here.” He looked at me and continued, “How about you? How’s your sickness?” he asked and I smiled at him.

“Cured.” I lied. “The doctor just said I’m not able to run for months so, yeah.” I rubbed my hands and wonder why it is cold even though it’s summer? Maybe he saw me rubbing my hands because he immediately took my left hand with his right hand. I know I’m blushing right now and I think my face became redder when he entwined our fingers together.

“Good.” He started. “Because if you’re going to die too, then maybe, I’ll think God is punishing me for unknown reasons, taking all of the people I love from me.” I gripped on his hands tightly and smiled at him promising him I won’t leave him. But I don’t know until when that promise stays,

--

The entire summer break, I’m almost with Hikaru all the time. He taught me how to play guitar and for more than a month, I know now how to play it. I bought a guitar for myself and we played the music together. We even composed our own song. Sometimes, we go fishing or watch movies all day. Sometimes I stay at his house more like I’m already living in his house.

We don’t do things that can easily tire me out since my heart won’t be able to take it. But… sometimes… we… well, sensei said it won’t affect my heart condition. I consulted him first before we… you know it already. But we only do it once a day, twice a week. It depends. Let’s end this talk. It’s quite embarrassing. But truth to say, Hikaru… he’s really good in that thing.

Hikaru also told me that he’s going to be an intern in Nagoya Hospital, the hospital where I always do my check up. That’s why I asked my doctor to keep all my records in a safe place and I’m happy that he understood me. Then I told him that I’ll continue my check-up at home or in school.

Summer break ended already and I’m thankful that my heart didn’t fail me to keep my secret from Hikaru. But once classes started again, sensei told me my heart went weaker.

I was walking towards school when I feel my chest tightening. I leaned on the post then suddenly everything went black.

I opened my heavy eyes and all I can see is white lights. The surrounding is really noisy and on my left I saw my mom. And once again I closed my eyes.

--

“You need to be transferred to Tokyo.” The doctor told me once I woke up after 8 hours of being unconscious. “Your condition became worse. we need experts to study your case.” That’s what he told me and I feel like something is not going to be okay.

I stopped seeing Hikaru for the reason that he’ll know my sickness. I stopped going to school either. My medical check-ups are still on going at my house. Sensei told me that Hikaru is already working as an intern.

One day, he went to my house. I was at my room and I hurriedly called mom to tell Hiakru that I’m not home. And she did. I saw Hikaru smile, a hurtful one. We haven’t met for almost 3 weeks already. And I’m going to be sent to Tokyo after 2 weeks. The following day, Hikaru went to our house again and mom told him I’m at my friend’s house. Seeing Hikaru’s hurtful smile, makes my chest tightened again. I’m hurt not because of my sickness, but I’m hurt seeing him like that. A lifeless one. I’ve decided.

I told sensei to tell Hikaru to meet me at our meeting place at sharp 2pm. I was standing at the grassy land with my friend with me. In the corner of my eyes, I see Hikaru going towards our meeting place. As if I didn’t see him, I tugged my friend’s clothes, and pulled him towards me and make my lips met his. I closed my eyes tightly not wanting for my tears to flow.

“Keito…” I heard Hikaru said and we broke the kiss. I turned to Hikaru and saw his surprised look. “W-what’s the meaning of this?” he asked me.

“You saw it already.” I told him in my over confident voice. “I’m cheating on you Hikaru. For this past 3 weeks, I’m cheating on you.” I smirked at him seeing his reactions. I wrapped my arms around the small waist of my friend and told Hikaru, “If you thought I miss you, no. all of it are lies Hikaru. None of the things I said is true.” I paused and take a peck on my friend’s lips before continuing. “Yuto came back last 3 weeks and while he’s not here, I used you as something to play. And now that he came back, I don’t need you anymore. I don’t even love you, Hikaru.” And I started to walk gripping Yuto’s waist tightly. And when we passed by Hikaru, I stopped and smirked at him before continuing in walking. I heard a thud and when I looked back he’s kneeling on the ground, shoulder’s shaking.

Yuto put his hand on my shoulder and told me everything will be alright. “I’m sorry, Yuto. For dragging you in this mess.” And he told me it’s fine. “Tell Yama-chan that I’m sorry too before he’ll know what I did to you and maybe he’ll call his body guards and my life is going to end early as I expected.” I joked and cracked a laugh but those are nothing when I started to sob and Yuto accompanied me on my way back home because he’s afraid that I might faint of too much crying plus it suddenly rained.

2 weeks had passed and I’m already going to Tokyo. But before that day arrived, sensei told me while I’m having my check-up that Hikaru got sick for almost 4 days. he told me that the day when I and Hikaru met, he saw Hikaru kneeling on the ground, letting himself get soaked in the rain and when he approached him, Hikaru suddenly collapsed to the ground. I felt guilty knowing that it happened to him. I’m being selfish but it’s for the best.

3rd person’s POV

Hikaru is getting better already. He already accepted the fact that Keito doesn’t want him anymore but it’s just too hard to forget the person he loved for more than 11 years already. Their time together is short, but those are the most precious memories that he have.

“Takaki-sensei, I’m going to arrange your documents here, is it alright?” Hikaru popped his head out from Dr. Takaki’s office while the latter is busy on going door to door on the patients. The doctor raised his hand permitting Hikaru to arrange his files.

Hikaru started to arrange the messy documents from the ones displayed in the table until the ones in the drawer of his table until the cabinet in the office. There’s this wooden cabinet which has a lock on it but luckily, it’s not locked. Hikaru opened it and immediately took a folder with too many papers on it. he got curious why it’s the only one there but what caught his eyes is the name, “Okamoto Keito.”

Takaki dashed out from a patient’s room and went to his office. Breathing heavily, he saw Hikaru scanning one particular folder, looking intensely on it. “Hikaru…” the doctor murmured and Hikaru looked at him.

“Are this all true?” the latter asked. “He’s not cured? He’s still suffering from his sickness?” Tears are already forming on the brink of his eyes.

“Wait until I finished what I’m doing and I’ll explain everything to you.” Dr. Takaki left the room and proceeded with his work. Hikaru on the other hand is still scanning the results from the folder from 10 years before until now.

--

Hikaru hurriedly went to Tokyo the next day after hearing what Dr. Takaki told him. he got the hospital’s address and Dr. Takaki called the hospital to tell them about Hikaru’s transferring of internship which the other party accepted.

“I’m Keito’s doctor before until now. He got a congenital heart disease. We were searching donors since then but nothing came. There are lots of hearts but nothing is compatible with him. He actually mentioned you a lot to me. He told me how the two of you met, how you became friends, he was telling me the stories cheerfully while he’s having his check-up. But then when you left, he suddenly became sad and he told me that you promised to be back that’s why he’ll do anything to be cured so that the two of you can play together.

“11 years had passed and you came back for him. If you only knew how happy he is when you came back. It’s like, he just hit a jackpot. He once asked me if it’s okay to do adult things and I told him as long as he won’t get too exhausted he’ll be okay.” Takaki chuckled. “Then one day, while having his check-up, he told me to keep his results in secret. I asked him why and he said it’s because you’re going to do your internship here. He also told me that he’ll get his check-up on his house. I really don’t know what he’s thinking that time but I agreed to him. Days after their classes starts, his heart became weaker for unknown reasons. I tried to study it but I just can’t get the right answer.

“I told him he needs to take a rest and transfer to Tokyo for experts to observe him. He’s getting critical and I learnt from him that he keeps on avoiding you. I asked him why but he won’t tell me the answers. Not until he asked me to tell you that he wants to meet you. And if you suffered because of what he did, then he too, suffered. Do you know how much it pains him to see you in pain? Do you know how much courage did it take him to kiss his friend just to let you see that he cheats on you even though he didn’t?” Hikaru looked at Takaki because of the latter’s inquiry.

“Yuto is Keito’s closest friend and he got a lover already. Keito went to Tokyo and wants you to be the last person he sees but because of what he did to you, he can’t face you anymore. Remember what you told him that if he dies, you’ll think God punishes you for unknown reason?” Hikaru nodded. “He doesn’t want you to think about that. You just lost your family and losing him is also a very hurtful one that’s why he decided to leave you. He’ll be able to take the hurt knowing that you won’t come back to him than you getting hurt because he’s dying.”

Hikaru arrived in the hospital and showed his forms to the guard. They told him where to go and there he met Dr. Takaki’s wife/boyfriend, Dr. Arioka. The doctor was instructed by Takaki and gave Hikaru his assigned patient. Good timing that they’re going to inject a flu shot to the patient so Hikaru can tag along.

Hikaru’s heart pounded hard and fast while they’re going nearer and nearer to the patient’s room. He’s wearing his mask and eyeglasses but he knows, he’ll still be known. They entered the room and found Keito sleeping peacefully. His mother woke him up and his heavy eyes opened but didn’t see Hikaru who’s standing at the side of the bed.

“Just one shot.” Dr. Arioka said and Keito nodded. Keito held out his left arm ready to take a shot. When the needle is already probing on his flesh, Keito closed his eyes tightly and that’s when he felt his right hand being held as tight as that person could and even if he’s cosing his eyes, the warmth being emitted to his hand, he knows already. He slowly opened his eyes, and tears started to run down his cheeks. Mixed of pain from the medicine being injected to his veins and happiness when he saw who is holding his hands.

When it’s done, Dr. Arioka introduced to the family his new assistant. Hikaru bowed his head down then the doctor called Keito’s parents to talk outside leaving HIkaru and Keito in the room. Hikaru turned to Keito who’s already flooding in tears. Hikaru didn’t let go of his hand and Keito brought their hands towards his face and kissed Hikaru’s hand. “I’m sorry.” He said.

“It’s okay.” Hikaru replied, planting a soft kiss on the latter’s forehead. “You look pale.” Hikaru inquired shoving the hair covering Keito’s face with his free hand.

Keito pulled him closer and make their lips met. Both of them can taste the tears streaming from their eyes. Hikaru doesn’t need any explanation with what Keito had done because he knew it already and from that day on, he’ll be on Keito’s side.

--

A month had passed and Keito’s condition is getting better than worse and they’re happy to know about it. but sometimes he’ll suddenly collapse or faint in an unexpected time.

One day, Keito got a permission to spend time outside the hospital since Hikaru is with him. both of them went to the amusement park and played all day long, savoring the moment both of them had. Keito looks paler and paler than before and Hikaru knows it’s not a good sign. The last ride that they rode is the Ferris wheel. They rode on it and it takes 10 minutes until you reach the bottom again.

The sun is setting down already to the west and the two can’t help but be amused with the scenery before them.

“Hikaru…” Keito called in a raspy voice.

“Hmmmm?” the latter answered.

“Thank you for everything…” he said as he leaned his head on the latter’s shoulder. Hikaru wrapped his arm around Keito’s shoulder making the latter snuggle on him more. “I love you, Hikaru.” Keito’s voice trailed off and he closed his eyes.

“I love you too, Keito.” Hikaru replied as tears are rolling down his face, kissing the latter’s forehead, down to his nose. And when Keito looked up, HIkaru catches his lips intro a dreamy kiss.

--

Hikaru is getting excited to go back to the hospital holding a small box on his hand. He rode a taxi to the hospital.

“Proposing to your girlfriend, sir?” The driver asked.

Hikaru smiled and said, “I hope that person will say yes.” His phone rang and he put the box inside his pocket before picking up the phone.

“Hello, Takaki-sensei?” He asked.

“Where are you?” the latter replied.

“I’m on way to the hospital, why?” Hikaru asked nervously.

“Keito was sent to the ICU, blood streamed down his nose and fainted.” And before he can hear the next sentence, he heard a loud honking of horn, a bright light from a truck hurt his eyes, the car screeched making him move forward, and a loud crash.

--

He opened his eyes and once he did, the light hurt it and he closed it immediately. Doctors came rushing in and checked him. They rejoiced knowing that he lived. He managed to sat up and was hugged by Dr. Takaki.

“What happened?” Hikaru asked.

“You got into an accident. You’re brain dead for a day and were ready to be mercy killed but because your hand moved, we didn’t. Then, after 4 days, you finally woke up.” The Dr. explained.

“Does Keito know what happened?” Hikaru asked.

“Keito, is in the other room.” Takaki pointed the room beside his. “but he’s unconscious for the past 5 days so, no. He doesn’t know about this yet. We’re also almost ready to take your internal organs since some of your organs matched the list.”

“Can you show me the list?” HIkaru asked and Takaki showed him. Scanning it, Hikaru said, “Takaki-sensei. I need a huge favor to ask.”

--

Feeling the coldness, he didn’t go back to his room instead he stood at the rooftop and watch as the snow slowly falls down.

“Keito, you’re going to get sick if you’ll stay there too much.” A tall lean guy said as he approached the called boy.

“Shut up, Takaki-sensei.” Keito replied still watching the snow. “By the way, where’s Hikaru?” he asked. “It’s already Christmas and I haven’t seen him yet.” Keito said as he fingered the ring on his ring finger which was said given by Hikaru while he’s undergoing his operation.

But Keito was surprised to see Takaki in tears. “Sensei?” He tilted his head to the right but was answered by a drag from the latter.

Keito was put back to his room and Takaki confronted him.

“Hikaru is dead.” The doctor said in one go.

“W-What?” Keito asked still in shock with what he heard.

“He died.” The latter replied.

“H-How come?” Tears are starting to form in the latter’s eyes and Takaki bowed his head down.

“He got into an accident. He was brain dead for a day but he moved so we didn’t mercy killed him. when he woke up, I told him what happened.” Takaki paused for a while and looked at Keito with tears already in his eyes. “I told him we are ready to give his organs to the people that matched his.”

Keito suddenly felt like the time stopped as his tears continued to flow down his eyes like a river.

“He took the list from me.” The doctor sniffed. “And decided to do something that he’ll never regret in 27 years that he lived.”

Keito then breathed heavily as he cried harder, hands on his chest.

“Y-You m-mean…” Keito started. “Hi-Hi-karu… He…” he wasn’t able to continue his words when Takaki nodded.

Keito fell on his knees on the floor, punching the floor even though it has nothing to do with him.

“He left you with this.” Takaki gave him a cam recorder before he left him alone in his room.

Keito shakily opened the camcorder and played it, revealing a very cheerful Hikaru on the video.

“Yo! Keito! Merry Christmas!” The first greeting Hikaru gave. “It’s still early though. See the date below? December 2! It’s my birthday! I’m getting old.” Hikaru clicked his tongue. But then the atmosphere changed and Hikaru started, “Keito…” A long pause. “Aishiteru.” He chuckled. “I know you knew about this already but I just want to say it again. Aishiteru Keito.” He then looked up and fingered the tears that want an escape from his eyes. “Keh, why am I crying?” he asked himself.

“I’m sorry for leaving you early.” He apologized. “But I’d rather let you live than to die.”

“Keito, don’t cry.” He said even though he, himself is crying already. “I know, it hurts a lot. I know, you’re hurting a lot but Keito remember this?” He fished out a four leaf clover on his side. “Your wish came true. You lived.”

“I…” he started again. “I actually want to see you right now. Kiss you, hold you, talk to you and tell you how much I love you. But you know I did it while you’re unconscious. When I visited your room, I saw you already. I kissed you multiple times and hugged you even if I was warned not to but do you know what hurts me while doing those things?”

“What hurts the most is when you didn’t kiss me back or hugged me back.” He chuckled, a hurtful one. “I bet you want to do it to me too, right?” He asked jokingly trying to clear the tense atmosphere.

“Keito, didn’t I promise you before? I’m going to be a doctor to cure you and I did. Well be together forever. And I’m keeping my promise.”

“ I’m living within you, Keito. I’m going to be with you forever and nothing can separate us. Even death..” he said. “Did you think about this Keito? Out of all hearts that are available mine is only compatible with yours. That means, both of us are really meant for each other. Our hearts beats together. Because my heart is going to beat only for you, Keito. No one else but you, alone.”

“Are you wearing this?” he asked holding a ring on his hand. “If you are, that means, you’re only mine, Keito.”

“I… I really, really love you Keito. our time together is short. The years we haven’t seen each other are nothing compared to the memories we shared together. You made my life blissful after a very tragic that happened to my family.”

“well, I guess this is goodbye. Bye Keito! You, living, is the greatest gift I received on my birthday. I’ll wait for you.”

The video ended and Keito can only bury the camcorder on his chest, hugging it like it’s the most important thing in the world. Then a photo fell on the floor, a photo of him and Hikaru during one of those days on his summer break, a photo full of smile and full of love.

--

“Keito, omedetou!” Dr. Takaki said and gave a bouquet of flowers as soon as Keito went out of the hall.

“Arigatou sensei.” Keito accepted it and he smiled.

“Suma Cum Laude in Medicine, you’re really a great kid.” The doctor said and both of them started to walk.

“Because I have a goal, that’s why I did my best to be on top.” The latter replied.

“Where are your parents?” Takaki looked around noticing they’re not there.

“I told them that I need to drop by somewhere else so they went home first.”

“Need a ride?” the doctor asked and Keito can only nod.

After a 15-minute ride, luckily, no traffic jam, they arrived in the place Keito wants to go. “Then, I need to go now. I’m sure you know how to go home alone.”

“Sensei, I’m not a kid anymore.” Keito said and started to walk inside the place.

Arriving at a certain spot, Keito put a bouquet of flowers, a different one from what Takaki gave. He lit a candle and kneeled on the grassy field. He fingered the cold plate, buried on the ground as the name says,

“How are you, Hikaru?” Keito asked and sat beside the grave. “See this?” Hikaru fingered the medal hanging on his chest. “This is for you Hikaru.” Keito looked at the sky and place his hand above him making the silver metal in his finger shine. “I’m continuing your dream and I’ll make sure to help those who are in need. That’s why, thank you for giving me a 2nd life. I promise, I won’t waste a second of my life.”

He smiled when the sky looks like smiling at him and a cold wind suddenly hit him and he heard a voice, a voice that he wants to hear for 10 years already.

Arigatou, Keito

~OWARI~

A/N: uwaaaaaa.. for the first time I wrote angst.. T_T please don’t kill me for killing Hikaru in the story…. T_T I actually searched for ways to make this a not so angsty ending but…. I can’t find any good ending except making HIkaru die in the story.. T________T
In the JDrama “I give my first Love to you” that’s where I got the heart disease… and brain dead something… LOL but then, from the heart transfusion until the video camera, that was taken from the Kdrama, “Tree of Heaven”. That drama made me cry a river of tears… T_T but the rest of the stories are my ideas… nyaha~

Maa~ comments are always loved and welcomed... <3
