PERSONALITY: Naoki is a coward, hiding from himself. He comes across as subdued and docile. He is easily led by others into doing things, and is amicable to the new experiences his friends and classmates seek to share with him, but seems to lack any real enthusiasm when brought along to the many shopping trips, group dates, or soba house food runs. When asked to suggest activities for the group, Naoki always demures, and passes the responsibility of the decision to someone else, stating plainly that he would be "Okay with what the group decides."

Similar attempts at asking him where his interests lie also end in deflection, or the catch-all phrase, "Y'know, the same things as everyone else." This couldn't be further from the truth; Naoki, beneath his disaffected exterior, knows full well where his interests lie, but has become too timid to pursue or admit to them. He likes giant robots, vintage manga, and the boyish fantasy of saving the world. For his own reasons, he has chosen to try lead the life of a normal teenager.

In trying to be seen as regular, Naoki has developed an excessively acute self-consciousness. He watches how others look at him, and he keeps careful tabs on how he acts, or what he says. He comes across as very deliberate and precise as a result, which some have taken as signs of maturity and sensibility. This impression, and the effort needed to maintain the facade, have created a small rift between Naoki and others, making him also a little distant and aloof, though he tries to take the edge off with his pleasant, though plain, smile. Sometimes, however, he takes out his anxieties on others, criticizing them for flaws he sees more vividly in himself.

Secretly, Naoki wishes something would happen that would allow him to just be himself instead of Inaba-Normal; on the other hand, he also secretly wishes things would stay the way they are. If there never comes a need to reveal his aspirations toward being a Hero of Justice (with a Giant Robo), then he'd never have to face the embarrassment of letting his true colours show. He's becoming comfortable with his new personality, and his new reputation, and the idea of jeapordizing that also terrifies him.

He feels guilty and responsible for the decline of the local model robot store.

BACKGROUND: Naoki is the youngest of three children, all born and raised in Inaba. As an unplanned and late surprise addition to the family, he was coddled by his older sister and brother and given carte blanche by his aged parents to do whatever he wanted. For Naoki, this meant growing up on a vintage collection of Shonen Jumps, and becoming obsessed with giant robo and the early mecha genre. With other children his age, Naoki enthusiastically engaged in games revolving around secret bases, defenders of justice, and evil alien empires; however, while his friends began to drift away from the past time, he continued on, keeping maintenance on the hidden forts and spending his allowance on robot model assembly kits.

Sadly, all children are forced to grow up, and Naoki's call to young adulthood came after his older siblings moved away for college and for work. Between middle school graduation and high school commencement, he mustered up the courage to confess to a girl he liked. What happened was an everyday tragedy -- not only was he out-and-out rejected, but he was also lauded and ridiculed for his hobbies and interests, told that 'someone lame and dorky' like him would never stand a chance. Her friends joined in to help hammer the nails into the coffin of Naoki's childhood. This ultimately petty and insignificant event, even by sleepy Inaba standards, nonetheless imprinted on Naoki greatly, and by 1st year he had undergone a dramatic change. Gone was the wild and whimsical child, replaced instead by the calm, controlled, and sometimes critical Naoki of today.

WHY IS YOUR CHARACTER HERE?: To pretend to be normal and not Char Aznable Jr.

SAMPLE POST: Today I put Brave Raideen, Getter Robo, and the others in a big box. Father asked me a lot of times if I was sure, and I said yes a lot with a brave face. He saw through it, probably. I'm sure he saw through it, but I could also tell he was kind of happy. Happy that I was growing up or something, I think he said.

Was it really all that bad? I mean, well... no sense worrying about it now. I've made my decision, and I will be going through high school with the same normal interests as everyone else there. Once a Hero of Justice makes up his mind, that's that, no matter how difficult the task. Hard work and guts will see me through.

Gonna put this page in the box too, I think...

ROLEPLAYING SAMPLE: There was never very much to do after school, and so Naoki found himself watching the last few minutes before bell with apprehension. It wasn't that he enjoyed school --no, he wasn't even listening to the final period teacher's drone about geometry-- it was just that there was precious little to do in Inaba outside of the structure that classes provided. That structure allowed him to comfort of knowing that he had to remain confined, prisoner to the curriculum, for precisely the lengths of time prescribed. No time for goofing off, daydreaming (although there was plenty of that), or temptation.

Those precious few moments flew by, and the bell rung. Classmates clamoured to their feet and hurriedly packed their bags while the teacher sought to yell the night's homework assignment over the din. Diligently, Naoki jotted down the details, then put away his notebook and stationary. Someone had come up to ask if he wanted to go on a group date with some girls from a neighbouring town, just twenty-or-so minutes by train.

"Where do you have in mind?" He asked, with bland interest. In middle school, he had gone frequently on day trips to the town mentioned, and had an outdated sense for what there was to do there.

"Well!" His friend began, dramatic and enthusiastic, "I hear they have a good okonomiyaki restaurant that ain't too far from a karaoke place. What'cha say, huh?"

Mentally, Naoki conjured a faded road map, revealing with an off-hand reply that he knew the eatery in question. He ran through the avenues in his mind, stepping out of the restaurant and moving across the road, as though on auto-pilot. He paused to ask where the karaoke place was.

"It's near the corner, like two stores off."

On the corner was a convenience store with good sweet breads. Next to it was... he didn't remember. He found the karaoke place, or where it should be, since it wasn't there two years ago, then halted. Next to it, clear as day in his memory, was a Gunpla store.

Hastily, but not without grounds, he politely declined the offer. "Sorry, I forgot I have club today. Next time?" He dodged complaints of there being an uneven number of boys and filtered in the halls. Art Club, while not in key with his aspirations (whatever those were), was like school: It provided structure, and a responsibility to attend. It was a safety against goofing off, daydreaming, and temptation. Most of all, there would be no robot models, just the comfort of canvas and brush.

He put down his bag, picked up a brush, and got to work.
