Summary: A Vaizard waits for her lover, all the while wondering and doubting.
A girl with a single braid of long black hair taps her foot as she leans against the building. She used to worry before that the chips of worn-off paint would ruin the long wool jacket she always wears when they meet here, but such minor concerns are behind her now. Now, all she worries about is that this might be the time that she doesn't show up.
It gnawed at her the first time they'd decided to arrange their rendevous for this location; granted, it was much safer than having one of them come into enemy territory, but even so that agitation had been a nuisance. Now, it's practically unbearable.
The sound of footsteps makes her look up faster than she should, the glare of a nearby streetlamp off her slender glasses making the approaching figure difficult to identify. She makes half a reach for the Zanpaku-to hidden in her jacket before she realizes it's no one. Just a stranger, not even stopping to look at her as he rushes by, to an appointment of his own.
She sighs, a sound of both deep relief and self-resentment. To think of what the others would say if they saw her like this-- jumpy and uncertain. Hell, she would have been equally surprised if she'd been shown what kind of woman these encounters could turn her into. She certainly didn't show any of the same hesitation when dealing with Arrancar, and definitely not towards the bastard Shinigami who'd banished herself and the comrades who were as close to family as she'd ever have from Soul Society, from their rightful home.
When she'd met HER, though, it was different. That was all she'd known, had been the only thing that had really drawn her to that scrawny woman with the twin hoop-ended braids and the scowl to rival her own. That she was different, unusual, unique... beautiful in an entirely difficult-to-understand way. She didn't like not understanding something, and so, like a fool, she'd been drawn in closer.
She hadn't known she was a Shinigami-- a Captain, no less-- until much later, until about their third or fourth meeting (all she remembered was that the other woman had her twin hoops on her arms like bracelets, and that it had been the first time she'd ever worn a dress-- a simple black one that accentuated her slight features remarkably). She should have been angry, furious, should have killed the so-called Second Division Captain where she lay so casually in the bed... but somehow it hadn't mattered.
It felt strange to Lisa, the very fact that the woman whose length was sprawled against her was a hated enemy and that it somehow seemed irrelevant. But somehow she had made a chance encounter with a kindred spirit, with something that had made her feel more alive than her power. And that she saw in the Captain's eyes what she felt-- that silent, unyielding need for more, more, more-- made any inclination she'd had before of stopping come to an utter halt.
And so the meetings had continued, and though it consisted simply of sex for the most part-- it made things simpler that way-- she couldn't help but begin to look forward to seeing her again. Going out on her own wasn't a problem, but it was that slight hint of impatience in Lisa that had even managed to catch Shinji's attention; he asked Lisa a few times where she went for so long and so randomly, and while so far her indignation had protected her from a full-blown inquiry it would not last forever.
Just like this. It couldn't last forever, she knew that. It was dangerous for both of them, she KNEW that. But it wasn't a matter of not understanding; Lisa was no fool-- it was simply that she wanted this in spite of everything she knew. And as she tapped her foot faster on the concrete in odd staccato, she hated this standing around and waiting even more, because all these thoughts and doubts kept visiting her like unappeased ghosts and she got the strongest ache to just go back to the hideout before the other Vaizards got any more suspicious...
And then she's suddenly there, jogging down the street towards Lisa, looking over her shoulder once or twice to make sure there isn't anyone following her. And once she was sure it was safe, the Shinigami Captain turned to the Vaizard and there's just the hint of that impatient, elated spark in her own silver eyes. It was that more than anything that wipes away Lisa's doubts, that quiets all the worries of the world around her, that always makes her feel like everything that they both were fighting for isn't so vastly important. They were just problems, just someone else's concern, if only for a few all-too-short hours.
"...I apologize," Soi Fon says hurriedly, glancing back the way she's come for a moment. "But there was a mountain of paperwork to finish and my idiot of a Vice-Captain couldn't be bothered to verify everyth--"
As delighted as she is to hear that voice again, Lisa silences it by pulling her forward, a strong hand forcing the Captain's head back as she kisses her, fingers languidly savoring the texture of short silken hair and lips so wonderfully bitter and chapped and familiar. But when she finally breaks the kiss her voice is harsh and clipped as always; even so just the slightest hint of that anticipation creeps in.
"What took you so long?"
The Captain's bewildered blush only intensifies for half a moment and she gives no answer, but also makes no attempt to resist as Lisa guides her toward the entrance of the hotel.
