Passing the timey-wimey

It's taken me all weekend to feel vaguely human again after last week's emotional rollercoaster, and now, alas, it is over. I have managed to do a fair amount of cooking, though, after going a bit wild at the farmer's market yesterday - trout with fennel, and carrot-and-jerusalem-artichoke soup, and ginger biscuits to bring in for my students, plus duck legs and quinces in the fridge for tomorrow. Sometimes I still struggle with inspiration ("maybe I'll just...eat some bread"), but it feels good to be properly providing for myself for a change: since buying a hand-blender, I've started making soup again after over four years, and it's like getting a part of my identity back. I'd not baked for so long that that cupboard was all overrun with weevils (I'm still picking them off, the bastards) and I'm having to repurchase all my supplies and store them in airtight containers. But if I can't have writing, damn it, I at least need to have this.

(My mother is having lots of people round for Thanksgiving this week, and, violating all laws of the universe, she keeps calling me for advice on how to brine and roast turkey and what to serve with it. Because I used to do that sort of thing, I did!)

I've also watched the Doctor Who anniversary episode, along with "The Five(ish) Doctors Reboot" (ilu Peter Davison) and An Adventure in Time and Space. All were delightful - I don't even want to analyse the anniversary special too much, but I thought it did a remarkably good job with a near-impossible brief. Perhaps my favourite part was the way John Hurt's Doctor managed (because John Hurt) to become a sort of amalgam of all the old-school Doctors, and pass comment on the skinny hipster youngsters from that perspective: "What are you going to do, assemble a cabinet at them?" And "all thirteen!" was such a wonderful moment.

And now, just one more full week of term to get through! Hey ho.
