ALL RIGHT I ADMIT IT I'M A GIRL. I LIKE GIRLY THINGS, LIKE GIRLY MOVIES AND GIRLY TV SHOWS.
(Which plays a factor in this rant)
Now if you can accept that fact here is a character study of Lisa Cuddy and how her hair is a quasi metaphor for who she is and the relationships she has. (It’s not as lolzy as you might suspect, read it and see if I'm off my rocker or maybe I'm on to something.)
Throughout the series of House M.D. we have seen Cuddy take on many different looks from the good, the gorgeous, to the what-were-you-thinking? > >
And in accordance with her wardrobe we have seen many different hairstyles that accompany her different looks. We've seen:
The season 1 long curly hair:
The season 2 shorter but still long curly hair:
The season 3 short curls:
The season 4 mix up of strait and curly:
And the season 5 bangs (-_-) :
And this season we've seen a new straight haired cuddy:
In every season we've seen cuddy with her curls (save for some episodes here and there where it was straight) which is unlike what we've seen so far in season 6 which has been straight hair all the time.
Well this got me thinking. And it reminded me of this scene from Sex and the City
(you only need to watch 25sec to the 54 second mark)

[Miranda: What are you an alien how could you not have seen The Way We Were?
Samantha: Chick film.
Miranda: Robert Redford [Hubbell] is madly in love with Barbara Striesand
Charlotte: Katie
Carrie: K-k-k-katie
Charlotte: Oh K-k-k-katie, right
Miranda: Right, but he can't be with her because she's too complicated and she had wild curly hair
Carrie: Hello! C-c-c-curly!
Miranda: Yeah, so he leaves her and marries this simple girl, with straight hair
Carrie: Ladies, I am having and epiphany. The world is made up of two types of women: the simple girls and the Katie girls…I'm a Katie girl!]
Even if you don't watch/like/agree with the show I think it's fair to say that they have touched upon an element that is true in our beloved Dean of Medicine. There are two types of women, the wild and complicated women and the simple women. And Lisa Cuddy is by nature, a wild and complicated, curly haired female. A quality that is undeniably a factor in why there is a mutual fascination and attraction between her and House.
As I was saying this is the first season that we’ve seen Cuddy with completely straight hair all the time. Cuddy is trying her hand at being a straight haired girl -a simple girl. She is trying to be the girl who ends up with the Robert Redford type, handsome, NORMAL, leading man type, her Hubbell if you will, who she perceives to be Lucas. The only time we have seen Cuddy in all her curly hair glory this season was at the 80's dance with House when we were revealed to more of Cuddy's character, to the girl who can party -the side of her that is a little bit wild. Cuddy is the complicated woman but she is trying to be the normal one now. Lisa Edelstein said it best in her interview with Mike Ausiello when she said "Cuddy is trying to explore having a relationship that would be considered normal." But it's not just the relationship she's exploring I believe she is exploring other sides of her personality to find out what it is she really wants.
Lisa Cuddy has never been a woman who has been described as knowing what she wants. "What you want, you run away from. What you need, you don't have a clue. What you've accomplished makes you proud. But you're still miserable." This season she is exploring what she really wants out of life. Is it the traditional view of life with the husband, 2.5 kids and a white picket fence? Only time will tell. What we do know is that she is desperate to find someone to love her (one grunted syllable at a time). Perhaps the Cuddy that she wants to be is the simple, uncomplicated girl and maybe that's who she'll continue to be. But she will always by nature be the complicated girl who is attracted to House when no other human being should be. It is what makes her interesting, what makes us care for her and ultimately what House sees in her as well.
And what Cuddy sees are two extremes: she sees the world as it is and she sees the world as it could be. She sees what she is and what she could be -or rather could have. And she sees House how he is, and how he'll probably never fit into the kind of life she wants for herself.
Do I think Lisa Cuddy's character has changed and she is this completely new person. I don't. I just feel we are being revealed to different elements of her character. We've known from the beginning of the show that all she's wanted is to be the simple girl, it's just that this season she's actually trying her hand at it. Cuddy is a curly haired girl by nature, she's wild, "knows how to party", strong, and the HBIC Dean of Medicine we all love we're just seeing her try and be tamed. I like seeing this exploration of her character and hope we see more. But I also hope we see the curls again.
And if you want to compare this situation to The Way We Were, Katie tried being the simple girl, tried not pushing Hubbell to better himself, tried to fit into the kind of life he wanted, tried to be the type of girl who would compromise her convictions to be the woman that he wanted but in the end she had to be true to herself. They split and she returned to her wild and complicated hair life. So for those of you who think it's over for Huddy, there may be hope yet.
Bonus: another reference to the great movie The Way We Were this time Gilmore Girls style. (told you I like girly things)
