5 Things About Me
1. I have two kids. Matt and Eleanor. Matt is five and just started kindergarten. Whoever came up with terrible twos never made it through a threenager or fucking awful fours. As five approaches six, it’s getting better. Eleanor is 18 months, has an ear infection, and is currently screaming at me from the living room floor. She neither wants me to hold her nor put her down. I don’t care what anyone says, parenting is hard.
2. I co-own a restaurant with my best friend. Referring to myself as a co-owner is newly official (though it’s always been kind of unofficial) and it’s taking some getting used to. I run the back of the house. I’m blessed with an amazing staff, which means I don’t have to (get to) cook as much as I used to and can instead focus on things like negotiating pricing in the wake of dropping our franchise and rebranding as our own restaurant.
3. I used to read a lot. Stephen King has always been a favorite author of mine. I still read every day, but now it’s more The Belly Button Book and I Love You, Stinky Face than The Dark Tower. Eleanor and Matt both love books, though, so I’m looking forward to the day when we can move on to The Chronicles of Narnia and Harry Potter.
4. Once upon a time, I thought that at this point in my life, I’d be celebrating my 16th wedding anniversary. I’d have spent a couple of years right out of college teaching English as a second language in Japan and would now have an established career as a high school English teacher. My husband and I would have four kids and we’d live somewhere out in the country on a respectable sized piece of land. It’s taken a long time to realize that it’s okay. It’s okay to not have that life. It’s also okay to mourn that life.
5. I can recite the 50 states in alphabetical order in less than 30 seconds.
