1: Hood
Tezuka appreciates most types of music although rap isn’t quite his favourite genre.
2: Buzz
He glares at both Inui and Fuji who just smile unrepentantly while the juniors shuffle guiltily; assigning forty laps to both seniors a year ago for getting Kikumaru to down three cans of caffeinated cola was obviously not enough to deter history from repeating itself.
3: Wish
About a year ago, when a classmate commented that going to the Nationals was a nice wish, Tezuka nearly bit right through his chopsticks.
4: Seasons
All four seasons are lovely but his favourite is autumn - falling leaves make for good practice.
5: Threat
Twenty laps are for discipline, forty for inducing a headache, a hundred is a threat he has yet to fulfill (and comes quite close to it when Momoshiro and Kaidou wreck two lockers in their latest squabble).
6: Portrait
An art assignment of a self-portrait has him handing up a picture copied from memory: the image of his first successful drop shot.
7: Loud
They say actions are louder than words - in those terms, Tezuka is deafening every time he steps out onto the tennis courts.
8: Energy
He tries to match his energy to that of white river water gushing and speeding over smoothened pebbles on the river bed; he always loses but never gives up trying.
9: Purge
He knew better then, and still knows, that no amount of purging could have cleansed the sin of hitting back when that senior’s fateful racket hit his elbow.
10: Mouse
Oishi once commented that Ryuzaki-sensei’s grand daughter resembled a mouse but Tezuka disagreed - mice do not fall in love with cats.
11: Attic
Soon he will have to move this dream of reaching the Nationals to the attic of his mind, where past glories are kept - it is a deed he will do with a faint smile on his lips.
12: Second-rate
Contrary to popular belief, he has been called second-rate before; the reason why it isn’t popular belief is because he doesn’t let himself forget that day.
13: Dash
Tezuka Zone is born after seeing other tennis players on the court and thinking that such energy spent dashing about can be put to better use.
14: Attitude
Changing an attitude is about as easy as holding water in one’s hands but he knows Echizen’s the type who won’t give up till he finds some smarter method of collecting water.
15: Wisdom
Tactical wisdom is embodied in his grandfather, practical wisdom in his father, subtle wisdom in his mother - he strives to master all three.
16: Sight
See with the heart, his grandfather has said before; it doesn’t guarantee success but it reassures him that he’s doing the right thing when his vision is as clear as polished diamonds every time he plays against a worthy opponent.
17: Address
All his life, Tezuka has tried to address every problem he encounters with determination and strategy - there is however no complete solution to the riddle that is his friend, Fuji Syusuke.
18: Minute
Even if every minute is like a living hell, he still shouts at his team to stay out of the court when he falls - there is no greater pain than that of being needlessly disqualified.
19: Cotton
Cotton reminds him of his late grandmother who used to take great delight in making clothes out of cheery cartoon printed cloth for her five year old grandson.
20: Claw
Yamato-buchou used to remind him of a resting lion - he seemed laidback until one saw the points of his claws glint in the afternoon sunlight.
21: Limit
When the entire tennis team is face down on the ground and twitching, Tezuka cannot help but feel a great need to impose limits on Inui’s creativity (through a meeting with his head and a well aimed tennis ball if necessary) concerning juices and home made health drinks.
22: Unique
Even before any official statement was made about the junior high tennis talents, Tezuka has already long known he is part of a unique, if unsurpassed, generation.
23: Gravity
Looking back on his tennis moves, he notes that he never really got over a longing to defy gravity.
24: Yesterday
When they win the Nationals at last, Tezuka knows he will look back on the countless yesterdays and find it was all worth it.
25: Jungle
To get to the secret stream that brims with fish and aquatic life, Tezuka has to first get through a mountain jungle full of greenery, illuminated by filtering, dancing sunlight - one of the many reasons to keep going back.
26: Garden
He stands in the garden, stares at the clear waters of the pond and remembers childhood dreams of riding koi.
27: Question
Tezuka quietly figures that the reason why Ayana never gets tired of smiling and asking “Tennis again?” whenever he goes out is probably because she’s waiting for a different answer.
28: Text
He doesn’t blame people for believing tennis is his only hobby, even if it does make him raise an eyebrow whenever someone stares upon catching him reading a detective novel during free periods.
29: Plastic
He’s met Rokkaku Chuu’s Ojii before by accident and the old man had been generous to a fault after Tezuka humoured him enough to play a game with him; while it may not quite be as modern as plastic or fiberglass, the handmade wooden racket still sits in a place of honour in his room.
30: Block
Taka-san’s resolve to quit tennis after the Nationals is quietly accepted although for the next few days, he can’t really look at sushi without feeling like it’s some sort of stumbling block.
31: Escort
When Kuniharu calls and is apologetic about working too late, Tezuka is already halfway up to his room and changing - Kunimitsu will be standing in and escorting his mother to the movies tonight.
32: Insult
Insults don’t just come in words, he thinks as he stares at the tennis ball he couldn’t return below the blue skies of Kyuushu.
33: Blood
There isn’t much that makes Tezuka’s blood boil as much as it turns cold - this time, the heat is enough to get him to take that first step and whack the ball meant for Miyuki’s head right out of the court.
34: Gold
“All that glitters isn’t gold… but it’d sure be nice to see that championship trophy shine in your hands, wouldn’t it?” remarks Ryuzaki-sensei with a meaningful smile when she sees his face on the first day of the Nationals.
35: Spot
He has his weak spots like any other tennis player - it’s just that Tezuka’s much faster at finding them and making sure no one else does.
36: Melt
The last time they had a celebration party in the tennis clubroom, the team bought too much ice cream that melted all over the floor; yet the next time everyone grins hopefully at him he can’t help but nod his stoic permission.
37: Guilt
It’s shared collective guilt that drives both him and his father to stay home one Sunday to practice judo; they’re both out of practice.
38: Duel
The first time Tezuka encounters the Rikkai Dai team, he is reminded of foreign gentlemen dueling with rapiers and samurai clashing swords and souls together; he doesn’t let his guard down.
39: Stranger
Not a lot of things can be stranger to him than the time Oishi threatened to quit the tennis team if he did… and just as equally few things can beat the first realization that he had a loyal friend.
40: Wait
He waits and thinks before he speaks, waits and observes before he plays, waits and watches with faith when his teammates display what they’re truly capable of.
41: Glow
In the warm nights of summer, he occasionally sits on the wooden verandah and thoughtfully watches the fireflies create glowing patterns in the air near the fish pond.
42: Action
“All action and no talk makes for a Tezuka,” comments Inui absent mindedly and while no one is brave enough to laugh out loud, the captain can still hear the other members’ strong efforts at restraining themselves.
43: Chain
“Tennis has chained you down,” says Kunikazu with a stern look and he shakes his head, replying, “Chains don’t make people feel free.”
44: Bitter
“Seems that your school made it into the Nationals! Without you!” shouts the ignorant boy; Am I supposed to be bitter? questions Tezuka silently.
45: Lock
After that incident with the small bear and mysterious white sheets, even Tezuka joined in the unanimous decision to get the clubroom a new lock.
46: Order
Tezuka has learned the same thing as Yamato-buchou did before him: order is never a part of Seigaku tradition.
47: Friends
At times he wonders about the friends he has - he’s pretty sure others would never make it a point to throw the person who assigned them laps a surprise birthday party - but most times, he doesn’t question and is only grateful.
48: Prison
To Tezuka, there is no stronger prison than the one he had made and entered when he thought his pain was greater than himself.
49: Journal
He hasn’t much use for journals since they’d be full of tennis theories, strategies and potential alternative line ups and he’s already set a book aside for that.
50: Zero
The Zero Shiki Drop Shot’s end result is something Tezuka doesn’t consider - he will never move backwards.
Nooo, of course the title wasn't taken from his catchphrase out of a lack of creativity, why would you say that?
...I see OOC-ness. Wonderful. =__=;;;
