Someone at Penguin's job, in reference to Fifty Shades of Gray said to her, "This kind of book has never existed before!"
I LOL'd. Just off the top of my head:
"Venus in Furs (German: Venus im Pelz) is a novella by the Austrian author Leopold von Sacher-Masoch, and the best known of his works. The novel was to be part of an epic series that Sacher-Masoch envisioned called Legacy of Cain. Venus in Furs was part of Love, the first volume of the series. It was published in 1870." (Source:

I don't have anything against the book, really, except that I wish that it was better written and more accurately portrayed a BDSM lifestyle, because I think that the kink community could benefit from the kind of exposure and interest that the novel has garnered. But that's just me speaking from my own standpoint as a member of a largely-invisible sexual minority.
On the other hand, at least the kink community is getting some positive mainstream exposure.
