"Masaki, who is he?"

Nino heard someone's voice from the next shelf of the library he was visiting. He pretended that he didn't hear it and continued searching for the books he wanted to borrow. He had eventually met Aiba here, at the national library, the last place he expected to meet his long term friend.

"He's my friend from high school," Aiba whispered to the man next to him.

Friend, huh, Nino thought bitterly. It had been four years since they last met because Nino went to Australia for attending college. Something should have been right if he stayed, but he just couldn't do that if it was related to his future. He left for Canberra four years ago and never once came back to Japan. He knew it must have been hard for Aiba, but he was free to choose and they never really dated for real.

He glanced at Aiba's company; the man was almost as tall as Aiba, it seemed that they were closer than just friends. Nino moved his gaze to the books in his arms; maybe it was better off this way. Moreover, Aiba seemed happier now.

“You look thinner, did you eat properly there?” Aiba approached him again when Nino headed towards one of the tables to read.

“I did sports a lot.”

“You? No way,” Aiba shook his head while looking at him from head to toes.

“You got a date?” Nino asked.

“Er-,” the man scratched his head shyly, “I guess so.”

“You should introduce him to me,” Nino said as sitting down and opening the first book he borrowed.

“He’s a kind of….”

“Jealousy type?” Nino guessed. “It’s okay, I’ll be back to Australia very soon, so he doesn’t need to worry about you having an affair with me,” he continued with a soft chuckle.

“He accidentally saw our picture.”

“We never took nude pics,” Nino replied.

“He thought that we were lovers back then,” Aiba continued, sitting down next to him.

Nino turned at Aiba and wished he could tell the other than he always enjoyed their time together when they were high school. He wished he could tell Aiba that he always liked him - to the moon and back - only that the life separated them.

“You’re going back to Australia?”

“Yeah, I got another scholarship for Master Degree and I considered applying for permanent resident status.”

“Mmmm,” Aiba nodded, “there is no chance for you to return here then.”

“I don’t know,” Nino shrugged.

Aiba smiled at him and patted his shoulder. “I have to go,” he mumbled. He walked towards the man who was waiting for him near the exit; they talked for a while and went outside. Nino returned to his book but stopped when he found a small memo beside it.

Seven pm, tonight, usual place

He took it and wondered why Aiba wrote it; what if Nino decided not to come? What if he had to do something else? Knowing Aiba for such a long time, Nino was sure that the man would be waiting for him, no matter how long it would take. The usual place; where it was supposed to be? Nino tried to remember where they used to go after school back then: pet shop, City Park, Shibuya game center, or the public bathhouse. He didn’t know Aiba’s phone number and it was a kind of stupid if both of them went to the the different place.

Nino thought that maybe Aiba’s boyfriend was a super-possessive person if he didn’t want Aiba to meet up with an old friend. Aiba mentioned about their old photograph; as long as Nino remembered, none of their pictures looked as if they were more than friends. He was glad that Aiba had found somebody; it meant the man would be less lonely, regardless that his lover was a jealousy monster.

“Sorry I’m late,” Nino finally found Aiba at the game center after going around the city, searching for him.

“I thought you never come,” Aiba said, offering him a broad smile.

“You didn’t mention where we will meet, what if I don’t find you?”

“You will,” Aiba mumbled, dragging him towards one of their favorite game. “I know you the most and vice-versa, remember?”

Not anymore, Nino thought, but he was glad that Aiba held his hand when they walked towards the simulation game section at the corner of the room. The atmosphere of that place had sent them back to their high school era; they were young and the only thing they needed to worry about was homework.

They played the game until both of them were too tired to go on. They left the game center and sat down on the park bench nearby after buying two cans of coffee from the closest vending machine.

“It’s been a while since I played the game,” Nino mumbled, sipping his coffee and leaned his head on the bench. “By the way, is it okay for you to go out with me? What about your jealousy boyfriend?”

“He’s working now,” Aiba answered, “don’t worry about him, I’ll find excuses if he finds out,” the man grinned.

Nino nodded and sipped the coffee again; it felt so weird to sit down together with Aiba again after four years of separation. It seemed that those four years never existed; Nino wondered if he chose to stay here back then, would Aiba become his date? Or maybe they were never meant to be lovers, just friends forever.

“Nino, I wish you could stay longer, there are so many things I wanted to talk with you,” Aiba said, looking up to the dark sky.

“You can talk to me now.”

“No, there are literary too many things, your short visit would not enough” Aiba said, turning at him and smiling, “maybe next time, when you come back to Japan permanently.”

“Maybe I would never do that,” Nino finished his coffee and threw the can into the trash bin beside the bench.

“I’ll pay a visit to Canberra,” Aiba said.

Nino flashed a weak smile at the man before him; he wanted to talk so many things with Aiba, too, including the unsaid feeling that he had been keeping for a long time, but he knew it was better left unsaid.

He thought about their little reunion on his flight back to Canberra through Sydney. Aiba sent him to the airport, hugged him shortly and wished him good luck for his advance study. Nino wished that the other could go with him, stealing Aiba from his current date sounded like a good idea, but he knew that was just his wildest imagination.

He leaned in his seat and closed his eyes as the plane took off from Haneda Airport. If the fate was kind enough to him, maybe it would meet him and Aiba again on another happier occasion.

THE END
