Sometimes things you cannot imagine occur, and the human response to them is awe-inspiring.
Some of you may remember my temp roomie
chowyunsmut. She and her two cats Charlotte and Maddie stayed with me from June to August of this year, as she worked to get on her feet here in Los Angeles. It was definately an uphill battle, but 4 months later, despite a couple of moves AND the theft of her beloved laptop, she was doing ok..... a new job and a new living situation.
That is, until last night when her new home
burned beyond repair The good news is that ChowYun, the kitties and all the roommate were able to safely leave the situation before any fatalities or major injuries occurred. The bad news is that worldly possessions, including Chow's wallet, are beyond rescue.
More details on the fire, as well as an interview with one of Chow's roomies can be seen
here.
redjenn93 has set up a paypal account to help the Roomies get back on their feet (clothes for work and needed toiletries), and as of 12:39p today had some $1800 in donations.
I read all that with chillbumps on my arms and a touch of tears in my eyes. To see people gather together to help others.... well dammit... it just hits me as that "Christmas Spirit" that folks speak of. And I think it's pretty damn cool.
Sometimes, living in LA is really hard on my feeling towards humanity. But today, I imagine my heart got all puffed up 3x its size (like the Grinch).... cause I just can't help but think that maybe, just maybe, we (as a species) are gonna be ok. Or as
aamandarin said in an IM with me today: Sometimes, people rock
*grin*
P.S. If you would like to donate to the cause.... please feel free to click
the paypal button at the bottom of RedJenn's entry.
