tonight we'll write a whole life story

Writing an informal music review because I can.

I recently bought the album now That My Tv Has Wings I'll Never Be Lonely by ...music video?. Seeing how much I love fireproof your Tv, this is quite surprising (eta: that I hadn't done so earlier, that is).

The lowdown: ...music video? is an electronic band from Arizona. If you're not into electronic/pop you probably don't care. But I am and I do. And I'm really bored and need practice writing these kind of things.

Now that my Tv Has Wings... is ...mv?'s second full album and it's drastically different than the first.

A lot more electronipop and a little less "simplicity", as far as electronic goes.

The album starts with a forty-one second long instrumental piece where- what's that I hear? - a faint sample of one of their previous songs rings in the background. It starts and it ends, seamlessly leading to...

the album's single, "Tonight". You can hear for yourself. This song is one of the higher points of the entire album. Everything an electronic pop ballad should be. Eccentric beat, lyrics you can belt in the shower and the buildup to a fist-pumping climax ("Toniiiiiiight~!") that fades as fast as it had started.

The lyric writing in this album is definitely notable, but in a few songs the actual vocals are too veiled behind electronic effects for much notice to be taken. There's a lot of "far-off-audio" cloudiness that's kind of unlike the first album. Even for it's genre, some parts feel overdone.

"House of Cards" has a fast "DnB" beat that just barely works for its melody, "Another Random Tragedy" has the artsy and contemplative lyrics but the slightest bit of unwanted repetition. Luckily, "Shipwrec" begins very promising, and ends with the promise admirably fulfilled. "Seasick" is eerie, bizzare and powerful all at the same time and it may have broken my speakers; in a good way. The soft piano melody technique used in the first album comes back via "Little Boy on Fire" (a song about a little boy who plays piano all day in anticipation for his recital and can't be with the other kids because he is on fire and might burn them).

"The Day I Exploded" is definitely my second favorite song, everything from the beat to the lyrics to the underlying guitar melody.

Finally, my personal favorite favorite song, "Sugar Ghost" comes at the end, and is the last song with words. It's very reminiscent of Sigur Ros (unintelligible lyrics, echoing moans, background guitar, cymbol-heavy climax, etc etc), but in the best way possible. Finally, it fades into the instrumental track "Question Mark".

Although Now that my Tv has wings is a very solid electronic/pop album, and by far more creative than others of its kind, it's hard for me to listen to it after having been a fan of fireproof your Tv. Compared to the relative simplicity of their first album, Now that my Tv has wings at first sounds more like try-hard eccentricity and overdone electropop that is, granted, quite ingenious sometimes, but can lean too far into unecessarily complex. Hopefully with the third album in the making they'll bring back the brilliant piano melodies and cut back on the background moaning.
