Generally speaking, I find most HK movies to be made with broad appeal in mind, Korean movies to be the most layered, and Japanese movies to be the most stylized.

I took a Korean cinema class in an attempt to break my impression that all Korean movies are jacked up..but all it did was reinforce that impressions. I mean, they even have a WORD for "there is beauty in a woman's suffering" which I think explains a lot.

That's funny because I watched "Thirst" last night and I thought the exact same thing! It went from thriller to love story to comedy to horror to romance...
