Love Me Back

#64 Garlic/Courage

Disclaimer: I do not own Naruto.

You make me feel out of element,

like I'm walking on broken glass,

like my world's spinning in slow motion

and you're moving too fast.

Temari looked down at the little flower in her hand, considering each tiny purple bud. Then she lifted it high over her head and watched as the wind stripped them away.

"You know," she spoke quietly, "purple's my favourite colour."

Shikamaru turned his head and looked at her from his perch on the grass a few feet away, "Yeah. I figured."

Nodding slowly, Temari lowered her hand and dropped the stalk to the ground, then looked around her for another of the pretty, purple flowers; Shikamaru turned away and they lapsed again into silence.

Temari frowned, growing more and more irritated as her search turned up fruitless. It seemed that there weren't any more of those flowers around here. Scowling darkly, she lay back and let out an exasperated sigh.

Shikamaru glanced at her but didn't respond - he knew what was plaguing her and there wasn't a thing he could do about it. The silence continued, punctuated only by the sound of leaves swaying in the breeze.

"Do you want to go someplace? We don't have to stay here," he asked her, keeping his eyes glued to the sky.

She glanced at him and he heard the sound of the grass moving as she shook her head, "This is fine."

Hmm...But it wasn't.

The clouds, their usual brilliant white, moved lazily and contentedly across the sky but they failed today to fill Shikamaru with any peace. They failed Temari too - failed to occupy her attention that is and her mind kept drifting back to the dilemma.

Temari did not even have to glance to the side, she could see it out of the corner of her eye, hovering in the air between them like a ghost. A ghost that was intent on making its presence known. She glared fiercely, seemingly at nothing but it wouldn't budge. It just floated there, taunting her, infuriating her, rushing her.

Finally she sat up quickly and addressed the air in front of her, voice coming out loud and shrill, "Fine. I'll admit it. I have feelings for you too, okay? So just...stop harassing me!"

With a pop, the thing disappeared.

Little by little, a smile inched onto Shikamaru's face and for the first time that day, he turned and looked right at her, "Now was that so hard to say?"

She turned towards him with the intention of glaring him to death but paused when her eyes fell upon the object in his outstretched hand. It was a small bouquet of the same flowers she'd just been searching for.

Glancing past him, she realised that there were lots of them on his side of the field. "Baka!" she exclaimed as she reached out and took them from him, "you could have said something!"

He didn't respond, except for a small groan when she dropped herself down next to him. "You would have gotten me over here a lot sooner if you had," she continued, moving closer to him.

"Doesn't matter," he responded as he wrapped an arm around her, "What's important is that you're here now."
