SILENT SINNER

Sometimes, it is a sin to love someone silently.
. . .
Colors of orange, red and the slightest tinge of pink decorated the evening sky as the sun set down into the horizon. The rustling of leaves and the faint sound of crickets created a melody for only the attentive listener to hear. A young, blonde-haired bachelor of mid-twenties sat below the towering, tall and proud cherry blossom tree above him, looking slightly disheveled with his loosened tie and wrinkled shirt.
He watched the petals of delicate light pink from above him dance gracefully along with the whistling wind and finally rest upon the waiting grass. The fragrant air found its way into his senses as he extended his palm; silently wishing for one lucky petal to fall onto his hand… and coincidentally, one did. It landed perfectly onto the middle of his palm; it writhed in his hand as if to say that it would only stay for a little while.
He had always loved cherry blossoms. From its petals of the softest texture, its color of delicate light pink that it seems to be almost white to the undying fragrance it brings, he loved everything about it. He always thought cherry blossoms were the symbol of purity, serenity and perfection.
He closed his eyes and tried to savor this moment of peace and serenity. With a busy life and hectic schedule he had been enduring for past 3 years, it was something that he found difficult to do in a long time. This moment of silence was indeed precious to him.
“Kwon. Ji. Yong.” A soft melodic voice interrupted the silence.
Kwon Jiyong couldn’t help but smile at the anticipated entrance of the voice he had heard. “You’re here already? I was just getting started.”
As he opened his eyes, he expected to be greeted with the splashes of the colorful sky but instead, a pair of hazel brown eyes stared back at him. He didn’t know why but he felt exposed to those soft eyes of hers. Her eyes that were able to search through and know his inner thoughts. Her eyes that were able to hold his heart and…
…see his silent sin.
The moment he set his eyes on her, he was a sinner and a very big one at that. He knew. He knew that someday karma would come around and bite him.
He continued to stare into her eyes. If eyes were the gateway to the soul, then this woman in front of him would have seen and known everything inch of him. For the very first time, he wished that she could look into him, his heart, his mind and his soul. Look into his whole being and feel what he felt everyday when he thought of her. He wished she could understand this sin he was committing willingly.
“Oppa, are you alright?”
Her sudden voice brought him back to reality and he broke the eye contact between them. “I’m fine, Chaerin. Don’t stare at me like that. I was just thinking about things.” He effortlessly lied with a small shrug.
“Thinking about work again?” She replied with a worried frown.
“Yeah.”
Another lie. He had been telling her so many lies that he lost count ever since the day he found out about this inner silent sin he had been committing. He had been telling her so many white lies…
White lies; as beautiful as they might sound, they were tainted and far from truth. They were still lies after all.
Jiyong continued to watch the sunset as he felt her sat next to him. On the outside, he may seem to be concentrating on the beautiful scenery in front of him, but truthfully, his attention was entirely on the person next to him.
“You know what, Oppa?”
“What?”
“I heard that everytime when the sun sets; there will always be a person there to watch its beauty.”
“Yeah, I know. You told me that for the two million and hundred and fourth time already.” Jiyong replied with a slight smile tugging his lips, earning himself a light shove.
Chaerin pouted. “Can’t you just listen for another time?”
Jiyong let out a soft chuckle and held up his hands as if to say he had surrendered to her ‘pleas’. “Okay, okay. Go on. Continue.”
A bright smile formed onto Chaerin’s lips as she cleared her throat. “As I was saying… everytime when the sun sets, there will always be a person there to watch its’ beauty right? Wanna know why?”
Jiyong nodded his head as if he was really interested and listening to this theory of Chaerin’s for the very first time.
Satisfied with his response, Chaerin continued, “It’s because there’s always someone out there wishing that there was a person sitting beside them so they could enjoy the sunset together.”
“Yeah, and that’s why I’m lucky to have someone beside me right now, right?” Jiyong responded as his eyes met hers.
Her face lighted up even more. “Bingo!”
Loud laughter erupted from both of them as they witnessed yet another one of Chaerin’s sunset theory episodes. It was like this every time. Everytime whenever they meet to watch the sunset together, Chaerin would always bring up this theory of hers and they would laugh about it in the end. Jiyong knew that this was one of Chaerin’s ways to keep them comfortable with each other.
After their laughter died down, Chaerin intertwined her hand with his, holding it a tight grasp, and asked him a question. A question that he had seen it coming to him the moment he met her eyes before she opened her mouth. He never knew why or when he had this capability of predicting what she was going to say. Perhaps he knew her too well.
“Oppa, no matter what happens, things will never change between us, right?”
“Never.”
“We’ll always be friends forever right?”
Although it pained him, he forced himself to say the answer that he knew she wanted to hear.
“Of course.”
Chaerin’s eyes seemed to have twinkled in delight as a laugh escaped her lips. “Good!” She then turned back to the front and continued to admire the scenery in front of them.
It was supposed to be the perfect moment where he would hold her hand tightly and watch the beauty of the sunset unravel before their eyes. It was supposed to be the perfect moment where he would pretend that time had stopped and that they were the only two people left in this cold world. It was supposed to be the perfect moment where he would let everything go and confess his silent sin of loving her for the past six years.
It was supposed to be the most perfect moment of his life but fate decided to interfere.
A loud ring broke the comfortable silence in the air.
“Hello?”
With his eyes still fixed upon the scenery that was before him, Jiyong listened as Chaerin answered her phone call. Although he may appear to be not the least affected by the sudden interruption on the surface, he was actually struggling hard to fight back the anguish inside of him.
“Alright, dear. I’ll see you later.” She said with a smile in her voice as she ended the call.
“Who was it?” Jiyong asked, trying to keep his tone as light as possible.
Did he really have to ask? From the smile playing on her lips, one that he knew was not for him, who else was there?
The answer was so obvious…
“Youngbae.”
She seemed to have said his name in a rather melodious tone. The way she said his name was like a happy love symphony. A symphony that will only be sung when a person is hopelessly in love… and that fact alone killed him. Again.
“I’m sorry, Oppa. I have to go now…”
Hiding his sadness perfectly, Jiyong faked a small, effortless laugh. “It’s alright. We’ll hang out some other time. Tell that fiancée of yours that his best friend said hi.”
The apologetic look on her face was soon replaced with a wide grin. “Thanks, Oppa. You’re the best!” She exclaimed happily as she leaned forward to give him a quick peck on his cheek. “I promise I’ll treat you dinner the next time we meet, ok? I love you! Bye!”
He felt her hand slip away from his before he got the chance to react. The tender warmth he felt from her hand was now substituted with harsh coldness. It hit him as hard as reality had. With her back facing him, he watched her walk away to the man she loved once again.
A light breeze blew past his blonde hair, ruffling his hair a little as it went. A bitter smile formed on his lips.
“I love you too…”
Yes, those were the words that will forever be left unsaid.
Those were the words that will forever be held captive by the silent sinner.
-End.
