Birds

He was a bird. He soared freely, feeling the wind caressing his face. Like an eagle, he aimed his goals at the endless azure sky. Everything was within reach; nothing was reachable to him. He would stop, perch on a branch, and take a deep breath, taking in all what Mother Earth had to offer. He would smell the rivers, hear the forests, and touch the pulsing life forces surrounding him.

The sun shined on him with glory.

Flying was his passion, his way of life. To be trapped within the cage of soil was to strangle his very life out. Nothing could offer what the sky possessed. Nothing at all.

He disliked confinement.

Yet he knew. One day he would not be able to soar any more. His wings would age, his energy drained, the sky would become just another cage for him. The clouds would mock him. Everything would still be the same; nothing would be the same.

Why, he had often pondered, why...

Why must it end this way?

He sought comfort in the realm between heaven and earth. Too close to heaven or too close to earth brought him only sadness and pain. Fly. To fly. That was his only mission in life. He lived on the addiction of freedom. For that instant, when in the air, he could sense himself. Only when in the air.

So he wasn't surprised when that day came.

He fell silently.
