Echizen used to hate chemistry; for it was a useless attempt at pursuing insignificancy. The existence of a smallest element was not needed for him to be an important person. After all, he would be a star.
That was before his existence reacted to Fuji Syusuke’s.
Time was spent and moments were shared together, gravitating them into whole new roles as equals in every meaningful term, until silence would be enough for them to walk in a steady pace of understanding.
Surprisingly, Fuji continued his career as a tennis player, completely hindering his great passion for photography. He was going Pro with Echizen. And when he asked the former tensai of Seigaku, who was still called Fuji-senpai by him, Fuji gave him a typically Fuji-like answer. Thereby prompting a particular conversation between them in Seigaku High School Chemistry Lab if he wanted to understand the reason why.
-------------------------------------
“Don’t you think it’s just like you?” Fuji said, picking up a glass jar full of silvery white dice shapes (1).
“Small yet strong. Simple yet sophisticated. Soft yet hard,” he continued. His tone was full of unadulterated satisfaction for what it could cause.
It was just like Fuji, calling him all the way to the Chemistry Lab just for this. Sacrificing his lunchtime to be spent in a deserted, damp, and small lab while Fuji sat on one of the chairs. Echizen sighed, knowing full well that he wouldn’t get out of there before the older boy got what he wanted.
And this time, it was his cooperation.
Echizen touched the cool surface of a square, glass water tank, which was on a table next to Fuji’s chair, looking straight ahead as he pondered a related topic.
“And you’re just like water, Fuji-senpai. Calm and appearing transparent yet inside there is more than anyone can take in.”
Fuji’s smile widened, happy that Echizen was playing along with him, “Saa, but do you know these two simple-looking elements can make something very fiery and beautiful?”
Fuji didn’t wait for an answer because if Echizen had one, it would already be oout of him. He picked a piece of the element from the jar and carefully dropped it in the water. He motioned Echizen to stand with him a fair distance from the now closed-tank. Fuji wrapped him with the familiar scent unlike any others, and they watched with fascination when a fiery yellowish spark appeared as the element was dissolving in the water.
Even in Echizen’s opinion, it was a beautiful process of disappearing, “It’s magnificent, isn’t it? “
Echizen snorted and Fuji just smiled knowingly as he had expected Echizen’s span of attention.
“Two insignificant beings can influence each other greatly despite their opposition,” Fuji ended his speech professionally. And Echizen just gave him a look.
Later, as Echizen filled his life with Fuji more and more, the more he understood.

They were never lovers; a cliché relationship wouldn’t work for them. From what could be seen, it was something far more complicated. Just like the chemical reaction Fuji had showed him that day. They might still survive the world albeit they were no longer sticking side by side like some lovesick idiots. He still had his tennis and Karupin, and was as lively as Fuji with his photography.
But what was the use of a mono-particle life?
If he were obliged to choose, he would take the risk of a short yet full-of-spark life with Fuji rather than an eternity of boredom.
For him, Fuji was an element which would take a longer time to know thoroughly than it had taken to learn why he couldn’t beat his father even though the old-man couldn’t even fight a cute and harmless Himalayan cat on his own and win.
Probably, there were just too many formulas of life for them, and all of it was just too tempting to ignore.

(1) I’m pretty sure the element is Na aka Sodium from Alkali metal group. It’s very reactive with water and any other elements. If it’s reacted with water it will produce hydrogen and hydroxide ions. And if you make it into a powder it will explode immediately when it touches water. Thus, don’t try this at home. Gomen ne, if I’m wrong. I took Chemistry years ago and already forgot most of it.
Note: I know this is a one weird fic and gomen if I have wasted your time for reading it. *hangs herself in shame*
