TV & Films Reviews !

May 11, 2009 00:29

Technically, this post only supposed to be about Primeval, RH and the last films I saw but I read something particular on
la_sad 's journal.

D'espairsRay is back in France (a little history here : D'esray is the only band that's left of my previous VK fancy.) in July for a concert and possible a signing session. To be quite honest, I'm feeling quite mixed about this belated news. I'm still a fan in the sense that I still listen to their music once in a while but I'm not as much as a fan as I used to be. I'm pretty sure I'll go the signing session (if there is no restriction on it) but the concert is trickier. As much as I like D'esray, I don't know if my present state of mine I could cope with rabid VK fans. Especially if I'm alone. I'm not sure I'll be able to enjoy the concert if I just want to kill the crazies next to me. (And can I survive, if I'm wearing a certain T-Shirt that I want to make ?) So, I guess I still have two months to think about it. One thing is quite sure, I won't go if I haven't got anyone to go with. As for the rest, I need to think about it... (I might regret not going in the end. I might also regret going in the end.)

Fucking dilemma. Any opinion on this ?

Now onto the reviews (short et not too spoilerish, but if it's big spoilers I'll tell you :D)

First is Primeval, spoilers for the whole ep. I can't do without it !

I have to say that I was a bit disappointed by this episode. I guess I expected more Flemyng/Curran goodness and there was so little of it. The little there was was definitely good and slashy in the end (The way these two look at each other is definitely eye-fucking !) The episode in itself wasn't bad at all, if only a bit silly and sadly tackling badly the issue of time-travelling in human history. What I liked in Primeval was that the anomalies were always opening before human civilisation, which reduced the possibilities of interfering with time next to zero. However with this episode, they entered human history and they kind of fucked it up.

*starts ranting*

The whole part with Sarah going back to the past = FAIL. I know it was a necessary plot device but for the love of time, if anything was going to alter time it was having someone going through the fucking anomaly. (And I won't saying about the soldier, if one thing. Balls, he didn't have them.) And that for several reasons :

1) She's indian. I don't there were anyone indian in Europe at this time (Middle Age) since no one had discovered India yet.
2) She could have brought back with her disease and infections or simply die of said infections/diseases.
3) Giving chocolate to the boy. Chocolate in the aluminium paper. Because there were chocolate and aluminium paper in the frigging Middle Age.

But if it was only going through the anomaly, I could have coped with it but it doesn't stop here. In another wonderful plot device, Sarah told the knight about his future. Yes, she does ! Because knowing one's own future has never fucked up anything, noooo. He knows he's going to marry that girl, so instead of waiting and courting properly, he almost ravish her (by his time's standards) when he goes back.

So telling him his future so you don't have to kill him which would change his future = UR DOIN IT WRONG

Couldn't they just have knocked him unconscious ? Come on, Danny ! Instead of doing ridiculous backflip, you could have tried to hit him on the head ? That would have been easier !

/end rant

Back to my overall impression of the episode :

Sarah, good and not! good. She proved she wasn't just the girl who know things but can't do anything physical. However, much of her action were pretty stupid. Talking logically to a knight as if he were from your time won't work. I loved her banter with Danny though.

Abby irritated me in this episode. Loving creatures is okay but she was way more preoccupied for the creature than the humans and that's definitely PETA-flavoured. Becker could have been hurt because of her but at least, it gave the wondeful scene of Becker falling through strawberries (and eating one in rather sexy way)

Connor. So little Connor in this ep and only Comical!Connor. And if I like Comical!Connor, I want Serious!Connor too.

Becker : He was a bit weak-willed with Abby, which I find a bit sad but overall he was alright. I loved the end, the shades and the pose XD (And I wonder how Connor managed to convince him to help retrieve Rex XD)

Danny : Amazing as always :D. The backflip against the wall while fighting the knight was too much though. I love his scene with the Knight, especially when he tried punching in the gut (Someone forgot about the armour) and of course, the eye-fucking 8D

Knight : Tony Curran was great XD

I'm totally shipping Danny/Sir William (Knight) and I have to write about them ! I have to because I'm pretty sure no one else will ! But to write about them, I need a plotbunny and I haven't got one yet u_u...

Now for Robin Hood (Spoilers for the whole ep and preview for next ep)

This episode wasn't as good as last week's but it was still quite good. In my humble opinion, it would have been better without a big chunk of the Isabella/Robin scenes. A lot of this episode goodness was of course because of Prince John who was once more awesome and crazy and campy and perhaps the only one (apart from Tuck) who think with his brains. Unlike Robin who think with his dick and think Isabella's totally trustworthy even if he knows her for less than a week I guess and she's Guy's sister, but she's trustworthy and a perfect shag. Marian ? Who's that ?

Okay, I'm a bit unfair on that since Marian is indeed mentionned by Robin and we really see he missed her. However, the fact that he's with Isabella and that he rejects Much once more makes dislike him even more.

Robin (talking about a couple with a baby) : They' ve got each other.
Much : We've got each other.
Robin : It's not the same.

I hate Robin. The way he treats Much,it's bloody abuse ! He always hurts him and, no, a hug at the end of the episode doesn't change anything. Much needs someone who loves him and I think Allan is perfect for that. I think that Allan (and John to a lesser extent) might be the only one to care about Much. I loved Tuck because he's awesome but I think he might too brainy for that XD

Back to Isabella and Robin, I thought last week that they were going for a Marian 2.0, the noble girl who play the good girl with the villain but is in fact with the outlaws. However, in this episode, we discover that she's not. She's actually worse that I thought (character development wise, she's better), she wants to have the cake and eat it. She's plotting with Robin Hood against PJ and Guy, but when Guy finds out and is about to execute them, she's begging for mercy because she's his sister. She loves Robin but when he tells her he can't run away to start a new life with her (aka he dumps her), she takes rejection very bad and goes back to PJ's side. Besides, if she was a poor wife jailed in her husband's house, where the fuck did she learn fencing ?

As for the other female character, it's not better. Kate is once more the poor damsel in distress that has to be saved. Funnily, PJ immediately understands that she likes Robin and this is where you probably know that she has good chance to end up with him. But strangely enough, as someone who doesn't like Kate (I try but it doesn't work), I'd prefer if she ended up with Robin rather than Isabella. I like her better than Isabella.

As for the rest, PJ is being completely slashy with Guy, as expected ;) I'm shipping Prince John/Guy XD And I love it when he's being all haughty and evil with the villagers XD

Talking about Guy, sometimes I wonder if he uses his brains. Trusting his sister a second time ? Yelling and theatening Prince John ?Seriously, Guy is worse without the Sheriff.

Next episode, more PJ. But the next episode worries me a bit. If King Richard is really dead (Since the show gave no date, I can't tell if he really is), Robin has no ground trying to prevent the coronation (unless he's suddenly fighting for another pretender to the thrown i.e Arthur of Brittany). Besides, if Prince John becomes King John, Robin has much less leeway. There's a difference between fighting against a royal prince and one's king.

But I'm basing all that on historical facts, so :D

Picspam of the preview.

And now two short reviews without spoilers about the last two films I saw : Star Trek / The Boat that Rocked (I'll the films of April on my list)

Star Trek : Amazing. A film that people have been waiting, a film that delivers. I'm not really a Star Trek fan. I know about it of course and saw some episodes but those were TNG and not TOS :D And yet I was blown away by the film, for a lot of reasons. A good pace, sometimes quick, sometimes slow but never boring; a good cast, Chris Pine was a perfect Kirk (which is actually the biggest dickhead in the whole universe), Zachary Quinto was a perfect Spock, I love Simon Pegg as Scotty (and I love the particular english accent that he used :D), Anton Yelchin was adorable as Chekov :D, Karl Urban, it's nice to see him as not!Eomer and of course the cameo I'm not supposed to be talking about; the plot that makes sense et ties everything nicely with the canon, excellent SFX (the use of lens flare was bit trying though), a sound editing that might have been a bit too intense, a superb OST. To conclude, that was Amazing. (And I think I'm shipping Kirk/McCoy & Kirk/Scotty :D... And I'm suddenly thinking of Scotty/Chekov in the teleportation room *w*)

The Boat that Rocked : Coup de coeur ♥ I absolutely love that film and it goes right there with my top favourites. I had been looking forward to this film since I first heard of it and the cast : Bill Nighy, Philip Seymour Hoffman, Rhys Ifans,Kenneth Branagh, Jack Davenport... Who could resist such a cast ? Besides, the subject (Pirate radios in the 1960's) was interesting. The trailers pretty confirmed my enthusiasm for the film :D And yet I could not predict just how much I love this film :D I saw it twice already and I want a third viewing XD The recipe is quite simple, a good cast with the good characters, a good plot, a large dose of humour (You spend the whole film laughing your arse off), an OST that rocks (8D), a good dose of emotion (without the sap) and a ending that'll leave you with a big smile on your face :D
Ah, I want to see it again >o<
I recommend it to everyone, in english though :D
