Out comes the whale meat!

Oh yes, on Monday, we had whale meat for the first time in years (they say) for school lunch. Apparently, in those days when harpooning whales was done on a regular basis, they had it for school lunch quite often. Now it's very rare so the school made it a very special occasion ( Read more... )

Hmmm, I did forget about the explosive harpoons, I admit.

As I'm sure is obvious from my transparent reasoning above, I don't really support whaling, primarily because I see it as unnecessary. Every year whaling countries carp on about the scientific benfits, but when pressed as to what they actually are, they're not nearly so forthcoming. Yes there are some benefits, but I don't think enough to justify knocking off a thousand whales a year.

I'm still going to have another more or less gratuitous pop at the sort of people who annoy me. "You shouldn't kill whales because they're such beautiful creatures," I've heard, which, as aesthetically laudable as it is, isn't exactly top class reasoning. I just have this image of all the animals of the world lined up on a conveyor belt. "Ewww, kill it. Awww, save it." What chance for pigs, cows, chickens?

Uh, returning to the real world for a moment, I wish I were more ethical with my meat consumption, but I'm generally not. I'm a flaming hypocrite who buys most of his meat from the supermarket for reasons of price and convenience. I will buy from the butchers at times when I'm not busy, and in my idle moments I've even contemplated vegetarianism, but it's just not going on. Okay, I feel a bit bad knowing that I know better, but hypocrisy has become like a slimy second skin to me now, and I think I'd miss it if it were gone.
