Yuma @ PuellaMagiWiki Personality:
Welcome to the life and times of Yuma Chitose, one of the world's only seven year old yanderes. No, I kid you not. Seven year old yandere. ... Don't believe me? Hey, I'm not stopping you from reading on.
First off, Yuma needs to be needed. She really, really needs it. After a life of being told she was useless, the cause for all of her mother's problems, after being beaten and abused for likely her entire short life, all the while having the concept of uselessness thrust into her, Yuma really believed she was useless... and grew to loathe the idea. She hated it. She hated the idea that she was useless so much, that she didn't really love her mother anymore - her father either, who was often absent anyway. She was useless to them, so very useless useless useless, and was only in the way. ... So, in short, she wants to be needed. To not be useless.
Yuma doesn't just feel upset when she's feeling "useless" - rather, it's almost something she's trained herself to look out for, as if to avoid her mother's cigarettes. Naturally, she's failed for the most part, but regardless, it's become something she is extremely insecure about. If she even feels slightly off, she'll start getting upset. Even if it's someone like Kyoko (or perhaps especially if it's someone like Kyoko), there mere implication that she might be useless, even if it's only inside of Yuma's had, could have Yuma in tears depending on the severity of the situation. At the very least, she'll likely to clutch at her head, the usual target of her mother's abuse, and react in some way or form.
To that end, on the other hand, when she feels useful and needed, that feeling is the purest, happiest feeling in the world to Yuma.
Specifically, however, it's not just about anyone using and needing her: Yuma wants and needs Kyoko to need her. She wants to be useful to Kyoko. Kyoko, who saved Yuma when she surely would have fallen to life on the streets, is practically everything to Yuma at this point, when she really... has virtually nothing otherwise. Kyoko, who took Yuma in when Yuma was all alone, Kyoko, who is the greatest person Yuma knows-- suffice to say, Yuma really, really cares about Kyoko, and Kyoko's thoughts and feelings towards Yuma mean everything to her. This goes so far that Yuma made a once-in-a-lifetime wish so that she could protect Kyoko, granting her magic that could heal Kyoko and, as far as Yuma is concerned, Kyoko and only Kyoko.
That isn't to say Kyoko would be the only person Yuma would ever care about, but rather, Kyoko is the only person who has ever cared about Yuma. To that end, Yuma can be very, very dependent on people who are there for her. She cares for them and will do everything within her tiny little power for them, regardless of the concequences... Concequences which, nine point nine times out of ten, she doesn't fully understand anyway. All that matters is that the person she needs to be there has been helped. She'll love you and cuddle with you and be your very best friend if you let her be, but only if you're there for her first. Otherwise, she can be... quite the opposite, quite frankly. She is a kind girl, but her kindness needs to be earned.
Despite all of this, er, craziness, Yuma is still very much a just little girl, not unlike the rest of the Puella Magi out there... minus the being half their age part. When the series' resident Creeper McCreampuff appears, her first thought is that he is a magical talking plush doll and proceeds to squish him in a big hug. She likes playing around, and can be surprisingly innocent and playful at times, given the right situations and stimulants. She's not overly hyperactive, but she definitely bounces around when she's happy and knows when to listen - she's honest, perhaps to a fault, and had things not been so bad for her, she might very well have been a bright, shining star of a child. Even now, she's very sweet and light-hearted when in a good mood. She's also prone to act before thinking, which is likely due to both a combination of her still being a child as well as her need to be useful - she can't sit around and think of ways to help, if she has one now, she needs to go go go!
Because that's not necessarily a good thing. When Kyoko was off in battle, Yuma was caught off-guard by Oriko and Kyubey, and the two of them together (the former of whom being a stranger, which, combined with how easily Yuma trusted Kyoko right off the bat, shows Yuma is not at all against trusting people she doesn't know) very easily convinced her to form a contract with the latter, the "magic plushie", in order to become a Puella Magi. Something Kyoko, despite all of the things Yuma feels for her, said very clearly to NOT do. In other words, the kid can be trusting (like a kid!), and without Kyoko or any other adult there to back her, she might be in a lot of trouble... in more ways than one, what with how she feels about being needed and all.
Strengths/Weaknesses:
+ Thanks to Kyoko, she's learning how to steal and sneak into places like hotels and public baths without having to pay. ... That's a strength, right Kyoko?
+ Given all the total crap life's thrown at her, the fact she can still bounce around and be a generally happy kid a lot of the time, that's a strength in and of itself.
+ She has a very strong will, and it is without a doubt something to be reckoned with: when she wants to do something, she's going to grab it and make it happen. It's this kind of determination, along with other things, that helped Kyoko decide to keep the little runt around, and it's that kind of determination that will hopefully keep her from dying later on.
+ She's a kid, so she tends to be a kid a lot of the time and see the bright side of things, even when there isn't one. Fighting monsters? Have a snazzy transformation sequence? Cool you're just like a magical girl out of a manga!
- She sort of has the tendency to flip out if she feels like she's been abandoned and been made out to be useless. Especially that there last part. You might think this is normal for anyone, especially kids, but this goes double in Yuma's case.
- Yuma is not at all experienced with the ways of the outside world. Given that she's a little kid, this is natural. Given that she's an abused little kid who is now an orphan, now expected to live off the streets, and pretty much let Oriko and Kyubey talk her into signing a contract without so much as reading it... yeah. It is a Very Good Thing she has Kyoko backing her.
- She can and will get defensive/jump to conclusions, because hey she's a kid, especially (and mostly) when it comes to Kyoko. Talking bad to her? You are a bully and must be punished. By means of skirt flipping or other applicable punishment. ... Is this a strength maybe? Hmmmm...
+/- To the above's end... She is very protective of Kyoko! Even if it's just someone who knows Kyoko or a monster attacking her, to Yuma, it's all the same. This can be a good thing since, hey, healing magic to save the girl's life! ... On the other hand, bad thing, now she's a Puella Magi and doomed to a life of fighting witches and such. But on the other hand, saved Kyoko's life! To a kid like Yuma, it's pretty obvious which thing is more important.

[Hello viewers! Today, we have for you a fantastic episode of the Eyeball Channel! Today's eyeball happens to be in fine condition, being only seven years old and all, and is staring right into your soul. After a few moments, the eyeball disappears! ... Oh, wait, the person blinked. And now they're pulling back, away from the camera, talking all the while. Care to listen in, ladies and gents?]
No, I don't think it's on, Kyubey... Yuma has never had something as fancy as this before. Mama never let me touch her phone. [a light gasp] Oh, I bet Kyoko would know! Kyoko knows everything, you know. We really need to keep looking for her...
[Now that the person the eye belongs to has pulled back far enough, viewers will be delighted to see that they're being treated to the sight of a sweet looking little girl, currently squinting at the "phone", trying to figure it out. Her green hair, for all intents and purposes, is impossibly straight given one very very strange thing, one that you should have noticed immediately.
The little girl is upside down. If you put a little thought into this, you should quickly realize she's simply holding her Gear upside down, but for those of you who can't think that far? Enjoy.]
Um... [The girl gives a light tilt of her head.] Kyubey, could you try a button? Since you're like the magic plushie, maybe you'll have better luck with the buttons than I did. Want to give it a try?
[At this, a pink, cat-like creature - a Skitty - scampers up the girl's arm and reaches out towards the PokeGear. However, it stops and tilts its head... then points. Apparently it's pointing at the "record" light, flashing over and over, for her trainer to see. Not realizing these are words that need to be put right-side up, however, Yuma just gives a little squeal of happiness and hugs the Skitty.]
Waiii~ Great job! ♥ [Grinning brightly at the screen, upside-down girl looks at the camera with newfound determination. In fact, there's almost something a little scary to it, but unless you're really good with kids, you probably won't be able to pick up on it.] Hi there, everybody! Or somebody. Yuma's never used a camera like this before, so...
[Yuma, as she called herself, shakes her head.]
I just need to know something. Has anyone out there seen Kyoko? I'm looking for her. She has long red hair, and it's really soft, oh, pretty too, and she's a lot taller than I am. And she knows everything about everything! [Nodding at this more-than-satisfactory description, in Yuma's opinion at least, she continues.] It's really important I find her, okay? [For a moment, as if something cracked, the girl's expression darkens.] If anyone hurt her... If anyone hurt her, I'll... Yuma will... Yuma won't ever--
[Seeing that the girl is likely either about to say something she might regret, or just scream, the Skitty quickly squirms out of her grip to hit the "off" button - just in the nick of time, too. You might have seem Yuma's poor little face wearing an expression composed of all kinds of things, like anger, sadness, hopelessness, and more if you had been watching her though.]
Third Person Sample:
Yuma didn't know where she was. Lately, staying in strange hotels, going to all kinds of strange neighborhoods and places; not knowing where she was had quickly become something normal. Yuma understood this, because Yuma wasn't just a place that she didn't know - she had been with Kyoko. She hadn't been alone. Papa and mama were dead now, but that was okay. Kyoko was there, and as long as Kyoko was there, Yuma didn't need to worry about anything else. Kyoko taught her how to survive, Kyoko was there for her at night, and Kyoko would never leave her.
Except.
Kyoko had left her.
Kyoko wasn't here right now.
Now all she had was this... pink... kitty...
... As soon as Yuma had seen the pink kitty (quickly dubbed "Kyubey" after the magical plushie that had granted her wish), it had been snatched up and cuddled in-between her little arms for comfort. The Skitty, at least, was greatly enjoying this treatment, though it was rather confused as to why its new friend was so upset. It offered the occasional lick, despite the saltiness of Yuma's tears, but Yuma paid it no mind aside from squishing the fluffy kitty.
Was her power not enough for Kyoko now? Is that why this had happened? Was she that useless that she could only manage to be useful for a little bit of time? It... It was like that, wasn't it? Instinctively, Yuma tightened her grip on the kitty with one hand, while with the other, she reached towards the cigarette burns underneath her bangs where her mother had scarred her. Maybe... Maybe Kyoko too, maybe Kyoko also... Wished to... But instead, she...
No... No no no, Kyoko wouldn't do that. Kyoko could have just gotten rid of her if she was going to do that, right? She wouldn't have taken her in to do it later, would she?
"Maybe... This is a test...?" Yuma sniffled, wiping her tears on the kitty's pink fur. The Skitty looked at her, questioningly, almost frightened from being squeezed, but did not respond - could a kitty respond, anyway? It wasn't like the magic plushie. The magic plushie would have told her if it was a test or not. Maybe she shouldn't have named it after him...? ... Still, that was the least of her problems. "Is it to see if I'm good enough for Kyoko? Could that be it...? Is Yuma going to have that kind of test?"
No... That didn't make sense either. Kyoko accepted Yuma the way she was. So why was she in this strange place? And with this little kitty that reminded her of the magic plushie? Kyoko had said not to trust the magic plushie, but... He was the one who had given her her powers, wasn't he? Without him, this wouldn't be possible! Kyoko - and Yuma too - both of them would just be regular people!
... Wait... Maybe the magic plushie did it? Could this be why Kyoko didn't want her to become a Puella Magi? Because of this? Was Kyoko wanting to save her from this test? That... That made sense... Kyoko wanted to protect her, after all... And Yuma needed to be there to protect Kyoko. Not in this place, with this strange person who wasn't her mama and the strange professor saying strange things she didn't understand.
She'd asked where Kyoko was, but neither of them knew. They just wanted to tell her about pokey things. She didn't really want anything to do with that, and though neither her parents nor Kyoko had ever given her a talk regarding not talking to strangers, Yuma was quickly starting to realize the people of this place, the people giving er this test, they weren't going to be any help at all. Which meant Yuma was on her own!
"But that's okay! Yuma isn't useless at all!" With this declaration, Yuma tossed her hands in the air, keeping one hand on her kitty companion (obviously given to her by the magic plushie it was named after) while she gave a jump for joy. This was her big chance to really impress Kyoko, wasn't it? She could show Kyoko just how strong she could be, how useful she was! If this was what she had to do to become a real Puella Magi...
Yuma pulled the kitty down to give it another hug. She was glad she could have such a cute friend to take the test with, but she didn't understand how it would work if she wasn't alone... Not that she was complaining. It was just so cute~! She couldn't wait to show it to Kyoko. ... Would Kyoko let her keep it once the test was over? Did hotels allow magic animals? She would have to ask once she finished the test and saw Kyoko again.
Her arms still lovingly wrapped around her new friend, like it were a treasured stuffed animal, Yuma shrugged her shoulders to adjust her new backpack - the edible contents of which had already been eaten up ("Don't waste food!" - Yuma had told herself, in the best attempt of Kyoko's voice she could muster.) and set off into the wild.
"Let's go, Kyubey! We're going to see Kyoko!"
