Ding~
The bell on the door chimed. Yamada Ryosuke walked into the small café, the air inside was filled with the scent of coffee.
“Welcome!” the store assistant greeted him with a kind smile; his name tag reads ‘Chinen Yuuri’.
Yamada returned the warm greeting with a light nod, his eyes seems to be avoiding the contact with this short, dark haired boy walking towards him as he sat down at a small table.
“I’ll have a hot mocha, double shot thanks” Yamada ordered quickly, almost like trying to stop the polite waiter from taking more steps at his direction.
“Okay, it’ll just be a couple of moment” Chinen replied with another cheerful voice as he turns around and skipped back behind the counter, bouncing with energy.
The sound of coffee grinding came on; Yamada slowly lifted his head and gazed up at the boy now concentrating on making his mocha. The café is pretty much empty at this time of the day, with only a few customers sitting near the corner with their drinks. The only sounds Yamada can hear were the swishing noise from the coffee machine and the smooth jazz music playing.
“Here you go, double shot mocha” the bouncy waiter said as he sits the cup of hot drink down on the table, “enjoy your drink!”
“Thanks” Yamada said as he took a small sip.
“Is it your first time coming here?” Chinen asked curiously.
“Yes, first time” Yamada seems to be more comfortable now, even though he still can’t seem to make any eye contact with him.
“So what do you think of this shop?” the chirpy waiter asked again.
“It’s got a nice atmosphere, I quite like it…”
“I like it myself too, although we don’t get a lot of customers here, but my partner and I just don’t feel right closing it down”
Yamada nodded in agreement, taking another drink from his cup. But this time as he placed the cup back down onto the platter he looked up at Chinen who is now gazing at the ceiling.
“Umm… would I be able to get an opinion on something from you?” Yamada decided to break the short silence.
“Hm? Oh sure, what is it?” Chinen snapped out of his day dreaming.
“Well, before I ask the question, can I tell you a story first?” Yamada’s face now looking a bit troubled.
“Sure, go ahead”
“You see, I used to be in a relationship with a person I really love, I met him about 6 years ago. A year after we met, we grew close, like close to the stage where we just wanted to be together forever. We’ve made a promise. But…” Yamada slowed down.
“But? Did something bad happen?” Chinen suddenly cut him off with a question, Yamada’s face grew sad, he paused for a bit, and then went on.
“But, I didn’t realize that behind our happiness hides an unfortunate event, one night… that night! He was attacked by a dirty scoundrel! And he did the most disgraceful thing to him!”
Chinen gasped in shock, finding what he’s saying unbelievable.
“It was all my fault” Yamada now sounded regretting, his face twist in pain” If I had insisted on walking him back that night, this wouldn’t have happened”
“So could it be that the question you wanted to ask me is…” Chinen said carefully.
“Oh, no. My feelings won’t changed even after he’s been… you know. I still wanted to stay with him, but for him it was traumatising. He couldn’t face me after what had happened. About a month later, he hanged himself…” the brown haired boy’s voice tone was even, but Chinen could see easily on his face how upset and shocked his was at that time.
“Oh no…” Chinen covered his mouth with his hand.
“Luckily, his parents found him in time. He was still breathing but only very shallow. We rushed him to the hospital and managed to get him back. But since his brain suffered a long period without oxygen, he went into a coma.” Yamada’s eyes looked down, slightly sad.
“So did he wake up?” Chinen asked anxiously.
“He did, when the doctor called me I was so relieved, and I got to the hospital as quick as I could. But when I got there, I was stopped outside the door by his parents”
“….why?” Chinen found that difficult to understand.
“His parents kneeled down before me and begged in tears, that was when I found out that he’s lost his memories…. Not just any memories, but all the memories she had since she met me. They said it was selective amnesia. It’s when a person receives a traumatizing experience, their brain will purposely hide that memory up and all the other memories associated with it. His parents were begging me not to let him see me for a while; they’re afraid that if he remembers me again he’ll go back to coma or attempt another suicide…” Yamada took another short sip of his mocha.
“Well, I think that’s reasonable. Just wait for a while until he’s a bit more stable than you can go see him again”
“But do you know how long they mean by a while? 5 years! I have to endure every single day without him for 5 years! Even if I see him in the streets I can’t say hi to him, I can only keeping walking like a stranger!” the boy’s fist start clenching together with fury.
Chinen waited for him to calm down before he continues on.
“And… it’s reached 5 years today”
“Why that’s great! Congratulations, you’ve come this far now you can finally go see him!”
“But it’s been 5 years. My feeling hasn’t changed but what about him? What if even after I explain everything and he still doesn’t remember me? Or what if he’s with someone else now…. So that’s the question I wanted to ask you” Yamada is now looking up at Chinen with nervous eyes, waiting for his answer.
“Well,” he began steadily “if he still doesn’t remember than just do it all over it again. Introduce yourself to her again and fall in love all over again. That wouldn’t be a bad experience!” he let out a small giggle“BUT!” Chinen’s face suddenly turned serious “if he’s already with someone else now then I suggest you give up. People who are in couples really hate it when someone else comes in and break things up”
“Really…?” Yamada appears to be a bit disappointed.
“Yes, remember, don’t tear other couples apart.” Chinen said again.
Ring~
The bell on the door chimed, a group of people shuffled their way through the door.
“Welcome” Chinen reflectively greeted them and begin to walk away from Yamada’s table to serve the new customers.
“Oh by the way,” he turned around and asked “why did you want to ask that question? Just out of curiosity”
“…why…. Well, I guess it’s probably because he once said to me he wanted to open a coffee shop just like this with me.” Yamada replied slowly.
“Oh so that’s why” the waiter replied and bounced his way towards the group of people sitting down near the window.
“Yeah… that’s all…” Yamada mumbled, seemed to be telling himself something.
The jazz music has stopped playing, replace by the chatters of the group of people sitting by the window. Yamada eyed the photo hanged up on the wall behind the counter.
A drop of warm tears slid down his pale face, and silently falls into the cup of half finished coffee that is now cold....
