Departure
For personal reasons, Bridget is stepping down from mod duties this Yuletide.
Defaults
We've had a few questions from past defaulters and
jenn_calaelen and I have chosen to institute a "New Mods" Amnesty. Anyone who has been banned for defaulting in the past is welcome to participate this year.
Revisiting the Eligibility Rules
We've been reading every comment and after some debate, Jenn and I have added another exception to the 2000+ character use rule. In addition to the <50 works exception we're going to add an exception for characters who were created over 100 years ago. Most, if not all, of these characters have been in public domain for decades and have had multiple interpretations in a variety of media. We agree that it's unfair to punish an entire family of fandoms for one or two popular adaptations. This rule, in its entirety, will also be applied to RPF, where "created" will be interpreted as the real person's birth date and <50 works will be determined by the nominated fandom. Oops: I typed greater than when I meant less than. This has been fixed now.(
Do note that this rule is applied after a fandom is deemed eligibile by our rarity guidelines. For example, during our discussion, I checked Sherlock Holmes - Arthur Conan Doyle, and it is over both our AO3 and FF.net limits. Specific pastiches, individual adaptations, and reworkings are still eligible (as are related characters, including Sherlock Holmes), but the original fandom is not.
ETA: Fandom Eligibility Limits
Since we had an inquiry in the comments, we'd like to clarify that we will be keeping the following fandom limits as specified in the original post.
Having >250 works, complete, in English, on AO3
Having >1000 works, complete, in English, on Fanfiction.net
Double the limit on one site may be enough to disqualify a fandom, but this will be decided on a case by case basis.
