Hi all penintime October 25 2011, 13:23:20 UTC
I'm very new to all of this (yuletide, livejournal) and it seems like soooo much fun but it's also quite bewildering! I can't believe how cool these projects are, and I'd love to participate in the Yuletide Treasure as well as the candy swap. But I'm wondering how to go about it, do I have to be a member of Archive of our own to do so? Iwas going to join but it seems there is a waiting list of 1900 people..? What do I do? Should I join Organization for Transformative Works? I'd be happy to donate to them, but will that qualify me for AO3 and yuletide and swaps? Like I said, I'm pretty lost here, sorry about that and thanks for any help anyone can give...

Not a mod, but:

You will need an AO3 account to do Yuletide. Last year, people who didn't have AO3 accounts when sign-ups were about to open could email the mods to get an invitation. I'm sure something similar will be in place this year -- I'd put your name on the wait list for an invitation (it moves pretty fast) but also watch yuletide_admin for announcements about other ways to get one.

Joining OTW has nothing to do with it -- it won't get you an AO3 invitation any faster, and it's not at all required to use AO3 or participate in Yuletide.

Ah, ok! Thank you for clearing that up for me :D I'll get myself on to that wait list now then!

. . .or just post your e-mail, and I'm sure someone can send you an invite code; I doubt I'm the only one with spares sitting around.

Yay! I am so excited! Last year brought all kinds of fun stuff and I've been looking forward to doing this again. My favorite part was somehow magically sending a box of the perfect mix of treats & the glee of my recipient. :D

I can't believe I've been doing yuletide for 5 years and have never seen this :D I am so excited to participate in the candy exchange <3

Thanks for hosting this! :D

Also please say I won't end up being the only vegetarian/vegan who signs up and is concerned about food preference?

Not by a long shot. Just note it in the appropriate place on your form, and the information will go to your recipient, even if they're not vegan.

Maybe adding some more info than 'I'm a vegetarian/vegan' might be necessary, though.

If I'd get a vegetarian, specifically a vegan, I'd honestly have NO clue of what I could/am allowed to send (since I usually send out self-made Christmas cookies which contain milk and eggs, sometimes honey) and some advice would be appreciated. :)

Is it normal to write some kind of Santa letter for either of these? Or do you swap that kind of information once you've been contacted?

Moreso the latter, since your recipient and your sender aren't held secret, like a secret santa. You can also write your sender a note durring signup.
