Analogue: A Hate Story/Hate Plus (visual novels) kaesa October 17 2014, 01:59:23 UTC
Analogue: A Hate Story and Hate Plus (now known as the Hateful Days duology, apparently -- sorry, it didn't appear to have an official name when I nommed it last year) are two visual novels by Christine Love. You play an investigator IN SPACE, trying to find out what happened to the derelict generation ship the Mugunghwa, why it never reached its intended destination, and what happened to the people aboard the ship.

You do this by speaking to two AIs: the archivist AI, *Hyun-ae, and the security AI, *Mute. The two of them will comb through the ship's archives and show you documents they think you might find helpful. As it turns out, in its last days, the society aboard the Mugunghwa strayed quite far from the place it had been at the beginning, becoming a Joseon-era-in-space dystopian nightmare, so in Hate Plus, on your journey back to Earth with your chosen AI(s), it is your job to figure out how and why ( ... )

I just finished Analogue and was considering offering this, but I haven't started Hate Plus yet. How long does it take to get through Hate Plus? Could I do it in a weekend or two?

I finished it in six days (mostly workdays). The game is meant to take place over the three days it takes to get back to Earth, and actually imposes a waiting period of twelve hours between each day of content. It's pretty easy to bypass, and I expected it to be obnoxious, but I actually thought it added something.

You can technically finish it in three very intense days without bypassing that if you've played through all three good endings of Analogue and you have saves from those three endings. Just load a save with *Mute, a save with *Hyun-ae, and a harem ending save. If you don't have a harem ending save from Analogue, though, Hate Plus will only let you start a new game with the harem ending after completing both *Hyun-ae and *Mute's paths.

Two caveats: 1. It is pretty emotionally intense. 2. You will be asked to bake a cake, so you may want to make sure you have basic baking supplies. (A quick mug cake is fine.)

AYRT

Thank you, this is very informative. I would be willing to play after work if there are time constraints. That's good to know because as much as I've heard about the game I had never heard that part, though, and I do like to plan ahead for that kind of thing. I do also have a harem ending save!

I... am guessing this is just a suggestion during the game to kill time? Do I have to take a picture of the cake or something? Because I can't actually eat cake but I have a picture of a cake from work...

Gallifrey (Big Finish Audio) kaesa October 17 2014, 02:37:09 UTC
Gallifrey is a Big Finish Audio spinoff of Doctor Who, about politics and politicians on the Doctor's homeworld of Gallifrey. It stars Lady President Romana, her bodyguard Leela, her confidant/mentor/occasional liability Braxiatel, and the shifty, conniving spymaster Narvin. There are six series, and according to my iTunes they are 1.4 days' worth of audio all together. The first three are sadly not available for legal download, but you can get them on CD from Big Finish. The latter three ARE available for puchase and immediate download, but Gallifrey's story is pretty dependant on past episodes to make sense, so I would recommend obtaining and listening to each series in order if you decide you need to take 1.4 days out of your life to listen to Time Lords repeatedly fucking up the universe ( ... )

Sue Thomas F.B.Eye is a TV show starring Deanne Bray as a Deaf woman who joins the FBI as a special consultant and ends up helping a unit out with surveillance, since she can read lips on the silent videos they get. It's a great mixture of humor, drama (some good A-plots!), and just plain heartwarming friendship, with some will-they-or-won't-they romantic tension tossed in ( ... )

Rivers of London by Ben Aaronovitch (novels) linndechir October 17 2014, 03:15:32 UTC
A book series of so far four novels, book five is scheduled to come out in November. Rivers of London is both the title of the first novel and the name people generally use for the series and the fandom. (The first novel was published under the title Midnight Riot in the US.)

The books are basically urban fantasy set in present-day London and are narrated by the main character Peter Grant, a young police constable who gets recruited into the semi-secret branch of the Metropolitan Police that deals with all things supernatural. Said branch only consists of one person these days, badass gentleman wizard Thomas Nightingale, who takes on Peter as his apprentice and teaches him magic. Together they deal with various supernatural cases, joined later by Peter's fellow police constable Lesley.

Why these books are great:- they're a wonderful read. Well written, funny, entertaining, they never get boring. I devoured them in two weeks and then wanted to reread them immediately ( ... )

One thing to keep in mind with this series is that book 5 is coming mid-November, so if you like to start writing early, you might get jossed before the deadline.

Jonathan Strange & Mr Norrell kaesa October 17 2014, 03:27:40 UTC
Jonathan Strange & Mr Norrell is a longass novel. The first JSMN fic I wrote for Yuletide, I wrote because the book fell off a shelf and nearly hit me in the head, and I considered this an omen and wrote the damn treat. There's some alternate universe where I didn't move my head and was tragically slain by a three-volume novel on Christmas Eve. It's that thick a book ( ... )
