Le Comte de Monte Cristo | The Count of Monte Cristo - Alexandre Dumas
Books
Comments: Big book, small fandom. And it doesn't deserve to be that way, because there is so much there to be enjoyed. Probably the best known of Alexandre Dumas' novels after The Three Musketeers and its sequels, The Count of Monte Cristo is (in my edition) 1,243 pages of pure awesome. It sounds a lot, but it's worth the read. So much happens that there's never a dull moment.

At its simplest level, The Count of Monte Cristo is a revenge drama. Marseille, 1815: an up-and-coming young sailor is deprived of his position, his bride, and his liberty by the machinations of three jealous men. After escaping from prison and finding a fortune, he sets out to take his revenge on his enemies.

How, you might well ask, does that fill over twelve hundred pages, when even Shakespeare gets it in under four hours? The answer lies in Dumas' fascinating cast of supporting characters, most of whom exist in their own right above and beyond their role of Necessary Plot Device. We have murderous stepmothers, treacherous cousins, bandits, corrupt justices, bright young men, Bonapartists, lesbian singing teachers, smugglers... Each of the conspirators has gone on to lead his own life, raise his own family, and no one remains untouched by the titular character's campaign for revenge.
