Fandom: Waxworks (1924)
Category: Movies
Comments: A strange and wonderful expressionist silent film about a young writer who takes a job writing stories about the wax figurines at a carnival. The short film (less than 90 minutes!) goes into the worlds of each of his three stories. It features gorgeous stylized sets and some of the best actors of the time, including Emil Jannings playing Harun al-Raschid and Conrad Veidt playing Ivan the Terrible.

Fandom: Scarlet House - Angela Carter
Category: Books and Literature
Comments: An eerie and utterly haunting short story by Angela Carter, better known as the author of The Bloody Chamber and The Magic Toyshop among other works of gothic-tinted magical realism. "The Scarlet House" is told by an unnamed narrator fighting to save herself from a chaos obsessed count trying to remake the world according to the structure of a tarot set. Warning for sexual and physical violence, though that's sort of to be expected with Carter.

Fandom: Ariane et Barbe-Bleue - Dukas/Maeterlinck
Category: Theater
Comments: Impressionist opera based on Maeterlinck (famous for the libretto to Pelleas et Melisande)'s play of the same name. Really interesting Bluebeard variant, incorporating motifs from the story of Ariadne and dealing with Bluebeard's previous wives in a really unusual and fascinating way.

Oh, isn't it though? I think Conrad Veidt's Ivan is one of the most incredible things ever.
