the masquerade ball's starting
aren't you taking me, darling
aren't you going to twirl me around
around and around
dizzying circles around on a dance floor
until i've lost my north
am i smiling enough, darling
suitably effervescent at the occasion
enough to make you happy
enough to make you oblivious
enough to make you shortsighted
enough to make you smile too
those dresses sparkle too lovely
but not as much as mine
never so beautifully bright
with the invisible black coverlet
shining also because black can
when you, darling, want it to
borrowed slippers with a perfect fit
made for thieving feet like mine
borrowed laughter ring like bells
tolling in the last hour of the day
but cinderella's not due back yet
she's got a minute to go
if that is what you want
i'll put on this doll's mask
i'll cake on this makeup
i'll don that pretty new dress
all for you, darling
so i can be your shallow little princess
