Chapter 24
Two days later, Uruha was walking in through the doors of the PSC building. Reita had stayed behind a bit to park his car.
It was a beautiful day outside. Not a single cloud marred the blue infinite sky and the sun was shining vigorously, as if wanting to prove that he was he had decided already the beginning of spring, even though there was still a week left until the first of April.
It had been a warm winter, as winters in Tokyo tended to be lately and even as early as February, warm, bright days were more often seen than not but it had still been winter, at least in everyone’s consciousness. They had all been waiting for the true beginning of spring: April, the beginning of a new year, the change of uniforms, the sakura trees…
Uruha loved April and he couldn’t wait for it to come. Every year, during the last days of March, he’d be anticipating the moment the sakura would start to open and reveal the delicate little petals. He’d be planning the annual hanami trip to Kyoto and then the partying in Tokyo afterwards.
The first week in April was a time to relax, think about themselves and who they were, reassess their valor and equally as important, replenish their forces so that a few days later they’d go back in the recording room more determined that before, with more energy and dedication.
It sometimes happened that work would pile up during the last week of March, forcing them to work strenuously even during that first week of April but traditions were still traditions and so, the Gazette would always find time to at least go to a hanami together. It wouldn’t be in Kyoto and there would be no partying nights afterwards but it would be bringing them all together, restating that: “We’re still here and we don’t plan on going away.” For the Gazette members, April was just as important if not more important then New Years, especially because the events on New Years would often bring together friends and families and people they’ve worked together with. New Years was somehow not so personal, not so warm. At least that’s what Uruha felt.
He had to wonder though what this year’s hanami would mean, since it probably wouldn’t be just the five of them anymore… Would Aoi bring Miyuki? Uruha knew he wasn’t being fair but he really would prefer it if it were just the five of them…
Uruha had walked in through the PSC building doors, exchanged greetings with the people he met on the way towards the Gazette’s recording studio, stopped at the vending machine to get a pocky and then barged into their studio. It was a bit of a surprise to find that Aoi was the first one there and that their leader was no where in sight.
“Hi, Aoi-shi. How come you’re so early?”
“Just felt restless after doing nothing for all those days.”
“It’s just been a couple of days, Aoi-kun. And I’m sure you were doing something… How was the honeymoon, hmm?”
“Well, because of that, I had promised myself to not even go near the studio area in my house and dedicate that whole time to Miyuki-san. Somehow I managed to see it through but it’s been hard. I’m addicted, you know that.”
“Yeah, I do actually; to the point that your house looks like a prison, with all that white and black furniture and bear walls… I sure hope Miyuki-san will bring a touch of color, your house severely needs it.”
“Actually, the first thing we did the day after the wedding was go shopping. Guess for what? Paint and furniture. We had been talking about arranging the nursery already so we had planned on using those days precisely for that. It turned out that not just the nursery needed decorating. Never go out on that kind of shopping trip with your pregnant wife! By the time I was home, I was so tired if I closed my eyes I’d fall asleep standing while she still had the energy to boss around all the guys bringing the furniture.”
Uruha had started to laugh by the time Aoi had got to the “Paint and furniture” part and that was considering he had restrained himself from laughing at the sheer expression the black guitarist had on his face. An Aoi killing himself over how the nursery should be decorated was definitely a sight to see.
“Oh, you can laugh all you want mister, for now. Let’s see you how you handle her.”
“But I won’t need to handle her, Aoi-shi.”
Uruha got the goose bumps as soon as he had said those words and seen the wicked grin on Aoi’s face.
“Oh, but you see, here’s the amusing part, you will have to. You see, Miyuki and Kai and Ruki had a little pleasant chat last night, over the telephone, and decided that decorating Aoi’s house would be the perfect opportunity for the Gazette members to get to know her better and have a little fun while at it. Don’t ask me what could be fun about painting walls… Ruki and Miyuki however certainly thought it would be brilliant. And when you think the whole thing is probably going to take a whole month…”
“You’re joking, right?” Uruha said, his voice trembling a bit from the sudden shock. Just then, Reita walked in.
“Ah, Reita-kun, glad to see you. Let me tell you the bit of news I just told Uruha.” After Aoi had explained everything to their bassist, Reita simply asked:
“Why would it take a month?”
Uruha didn’t need time to figure that out, so he was the one to answer, knowing he had it right when seeing the grin on Aoi’s face.
“Because it’s Ru-chan and Miyuki-san we’re talking about.”
Uruha’s face finally showed understanding. But Reita’s “okay” certainly surprised both guitarists. Aoi was the one to ask:
“You’re ok with it? Spending not a couple of days but almost a whole month redecorating my apartment, in the presence of those maniacs?”
Reita was smiling a bright smile.
“Sure. It’s gonna be fun seeing those two ordering you around.”
“They’re gonna be ordering you around too!” Aoi dutifully explained.
“Yeah, but it’s not my apartment they’d be redecorating, is it?” Reita mischievously added. “Plus, I want to be involved in my nephew’s life as soon as possible, and decorating the nursery certainly makes it sooner.”
Uruha thought that he should take advantage of the situation and ask about what had been bothering him.
“Guys, what are we gonna do for this year’s hanami? I mean with Aoi-shi getting married and the redecorating thingy…”
“I think we’d all like to go to Kyoto for a couple of days, wouldn’t we?” Aoi answered. He knew where Uruha was coming from and he understood the guitarists concerns. He had been thinking the same thing. How would his marriage change them? And he had reached a conclusion. It would change them the least possible. Miyuki had become a part of his life but that didn’t mean he had to sacrifice his other part. And no matter how much he had come to care about her, there were still some things he would keep for himself. Sometimes he wondered if it had been Sakito, would he feel different?
“But what about Miyuki-san?” Uruha timidly asked.
“She wouldn’t mind.”
“Have you talked to her about it, Aoi-shi?”
“No, not really. Today, I will though. But she wouldn’t oppose it and even if she would…” It wasn’t hard to guess what would be the end of that phrase. Silence overcame the three members. But fortunately, moments later, Ruki decided to barge in, the perfect image of cheerfulness.
“Morning, guys!”
“Now why are you so happy and sparkly this morning?” Reita asked.
“That’s a secret!”
“Oh, no, it isn’t! Since you decided you couldn’t attend my wedding. You have no idea how hurt I was!” Aoi said, a hand placed over his heart and a pout on his lips. It was obvious he was faking it but Ruki felt just a little bit guilty.
“I am sorry, Aoi-chan, but I just knew you’d understand.” Ruki answered fluttering his lashes.
“Of course I do, but I do reserve the right to share the news with Reita-san and Uruha-kun.”
Ruki rolled his eyes. “Of course you would! Go ahead then!” The talk was temporarily interrupted by Kai’s arrival, the drummer just strolling in, approaching Ruki and embracing him from behind. The action had the most amusing reactions from the members. Ruki just pressed closer to him and got a blissful look on his face, Uruha gaped, Reita just eyed them closely while Aoi pulled out an ear-to-ear grin.
“So, we have the proof right before our eyes. By the way, I also have it on my cell-phone. Guys, wanna see?”
The blush that was coloring Ruki’s cheeks certainly grew darker upon seeing Aoi showing Reita and Uruha the picture he had sent. Reita’s reaction was cool, as usual, while Uruha just stared some more at the photo, then at the couple, then again at the photo…
“Congratulations! It was about time, if I do say so.” Reita said.
Uruha just pouted and muttered: “Congratulations, you guys! But I do need to know why Aoi-shi got this message and I didn’t!”
Kai paid no attention to Uruha’s pout and just urged the members to get practicing. He was the leader after all; he had responsibilities…
With all the members hyped up and in a playful mood, the practice went on smoothly and without big mistakes. They had been compiling new songs for the album and in the main time repeating and rearranging some old ones so that they’d fit the present Gazette’s image, so what should have been a stressful practice actually turned out much better than anyone could have imagined. At the end of the two hours practice, Uruha was the first one to let out a loud sigh and say:
“If you guys getting together means all our rehearsals are gonna go like this, then I guess I can get over not being the first one to get that picture…”
The new couple blushed, while Reita and Aoi were laughing unrestrained. It felt good to be the Gazette. Aoi would never want that to change, for nothing in the world. A bit later, when they were about to wrap up for that day, Aoi decided to reopen the hanami subject.
“So, how about going to hanami in Tokyo on the 8th and 9th?”
“On the 9th we have a meeting with the single’s cover designer, remember?” Ruki said.
“Damn! I forgot all about that boring meeting.”
“Hey! It’s not boring…”
“No offence, Ru-chan, but you’re the only one who thinks that. You know you’re the one that mostly decides on that kind of artistic stuff... Let’s face it, when you and the designer start talking, the rest of us might just as well start napping.”
Ruki knew Aoi was right. He really did enjoy getting involved in creating their image as a band and even though he asked their opinions constantly, most of the times, they’d just leave things up to him and the professionals. He couldn’t blame Aoi or Uruha though; I mean with their artistic sense… the band would be doomed. Which reminded him:
“That is precisely why I’ll be in charge of reshaping your apartment, Aoi-chan.” Ruki wickedly added.
Reita and Uruha scurried out the door, while Kai started polishing his already shining timbales.
“Ruki! I mean really, isn’t Miyuki-san just enough? Why do you want to torture me so?”
“Come on, Aoi-shi. You can’t possibly honestly think that a baby can live in that apartment, can you? It’s all gray.”
“Well, when you put it like that…”
Aoi’s face suddenly lost his smile when noticing Ruki balancing from one foot to the other and hearing his serious tone:
“Are you happy, Aoi-chan? With your decision, I mean?”
Aoi didn’t need Ruki to say more than that. He knew what their vocalist was referring to and he had asked himself that so many times. The few days he had spent alone in Miyuki’s company were at the same time relaxing as they were stressful. It was hard to describe his feelings. They had been talking about the baby and changing their apartment; going to visit Aoi’s parents again soon, attacked the kitchen together, learned more about the other… Aoi couldn’t name one single bad thing or emotion he had felt during those days (apart from the moment he imagined his whole apartment becoming green - it was one of Miyuki’s favorite colors) and still, in her presence he wasn’t exactly himself. Not like he had been during those few moments he had spent at Sakito’s side. There was a part of him that refused to appear when he was together with his wife…
“I’m not unhappy, Ru-chan...”
“Because I only agreed to that decorating thing thinking you wouldn’t mind and it would be best if we got involved in that way… make it easier for you.”
“I appreciate it. Sometimes it takes a bit of effort. I’m sure she feels the same way. But, when I think about that nursery and my child having a mother and a father to be beside him every day of his life… I think it’s worth it.”
“I see. Aoi-shi, what would you do if you got news from Sakito-san… I mean, would you ever consider divorcing her and…”
“Is there something you know and not telling me, Ruki?”
“Just please answer.”
“Unless she suddenly turns out to be a completely different person than I thought, I won’t do that, Ru-chan. Not even if Sakito-san would want me to. You know my baby would go with its mother. I want to be there everyday of my child’s life, not just someone that comes over during the weekend. You know, I never actually seriously thought about having children and taking care of them, until now, but I think subconsciously, I always wanted to become a father.”
“I see. Well then, I’ll make sure to at least consider your opinion when decorating.” Ruki said playfully. He had his answer and he’d make sure his friend got what he wanted. Even if it meant that another person would get hurt in the process.
“You better. Now I have to get out of here.” And just like that, Aoi was out the door, leaving Kai and Ruki alone.
Kai finally left the drums and approached his lover, cradling him from behind. They loved the comfort that simple gesture could bring. His question was so softly stated that it resembled a whisper, but Ruki heard it clearly.
“You didn’t tell him about it.”
“No, I didn’t.”
“If it helps, I think it was the right thing to do.”
“Yeah. I just wish things would be different somehow.”
“I know.”
“Come on, let’s get home.”
“Yeah.”
Kai walked towards the door and Ruki followed behind him before stopping abruptly in front of the trash can, taking a letter out, shredding it to pieces and throwing it away.
“I just wish we would have left the disposal of all those letters up to the staff.” Ruki said, staring at the pieces of paper he had thrown in the trashcan. “Do you think I should talk to Yomi-san?”
“No, it’s better to let it…”
“Yeah. Cool off, right? But will it really? I mean, Sakito-san seems to be taking this really hard, harder than Aoi-kun.”
“Time heals wounds, Ru-chan.” Kai wanted to assure the vocalist but he was actually debating with himself over the same question. If it had been him instead of Sakito, would he cool off eventually? Could time and Ruki forming a family stop him from loving the vocalist? He didn’t think so…
A/N: This was more of a filler chapter, offering a little more information about the characters and just tiny clues as to where this will be going. I wonder if you'll spot them...
Other than that, my life has been hectic but I'm finally getting it under control, I think. Gotta do some serious writing in the near future... Oh, and my friends know just how much I love Gackt, well, lately he's on TV a lot so I'm positively ecstatic.
Oh, and another thingy. I don't know how many of you are reading this and although I'd love it if you'd tell me what you think, I can't force you to comment. And I don't have anything against you adding me as a friend but I won't add you back unless you comment. (I consider friends the people I actually talk to).
With that said, big hugs from me and I'll be waiting for your love, darlings.
