Chapter 20
“The guitarist of the most well sold visual kei band in Japan is getting married in only two weeks. Find out who is the happy woman and why they decided to tie the knot so fast. Exclusive interview with Aoi, the guitarist of the Gazette.”
The article was finally out and as soon as the magazine hit the shelves messages from the fans started pouring in. Aoi could only stand by and watch as every day hundreds of letters and mails were being received. He couldn’t read them all but what he did read made his heart ache. It was obvious he had managed to distress his fans. Most of the messages just contained questions as: “What will happen to the Gazette from now on?” “What about us, your fans?” “Why such in a hurry?” “Why is she so special?” “Will you still have time to write music?” “What about the performance during concerts?” “What about our place in your heart?” From time to time he would also get more nasty messages that made him want to throw his guitar out the window… All in all, after reading the messages, he felt as if somehow he had betrayed them.
He had been invited to a radio show to talk about the subject and he had lunged at the opportunity. He wanted to make it better, make the fans feel more at ease. The members had supported him all along.
He didn’t think he had ever felt so nervous when stepping into the small room.
“So, Aoi-san, congratulations are in order.”
“Thank you.”
“Since we’ve announced this radio show, we’ve been flooded by messages. I can’t imagine how it’s been like for you these days.”
“Well, the fans have certainly proven me how concerned they are about us.”
“So, since there are so many messages, I think we should get straight to the point. First message, form a miss Ponchan-san. Aoi-san, congratulations on behalf of your upcoming marriage. I have to admit I was quite shocked when I saw the magazine the other day. I didn’t quite believe my eyes at first. I actually had my mother read it aloud for me before I could believe it. I was just wondering how do you see your future from now on? Usually marriage is a big step in life that changes that person and those around him. I am quite concerned about the band from now on. I love the Gazette and hope to be able to love them for a long time from now on.”
“Thank you for your heart-felt wishes.” Aoi had started. “Yes, marriage is indeed a big step in life and I am not taking it lightly. But, I can assure all of our fans that Gazette will remain unchanged, or better said, as unchanged as possible. Music for me isn’t something I could throw aside even if I wanted to. So I also hope you will stick with us for a long time from now on.”
“Actually, we have also gotten some questions about your fiancé. How is she like? Is she a Gazette fan? How have you met? And some questions have come regarding how she feels about your activity from now on. The fans seem certainly worried about your wife putting a leash on you.” The MC laughed a little bit when saying the last phrase.
“Well, we’ve met in the most common of places: a bar. And it wasn’t love at first sight but we liked each other and well, let’s say that things evolved rapidly. How she’s like? That’s a difficult one. If you’d meet her, you’d probably understand why it’s difficult to describe her…”
“Funny you should mention that, Aoi-san, because we have a surprise for you. We’ve actually invited your fiancé to this little meeting and she happily accepted. Miyuki-san, please come in.”
Aoi was shocked to say the least to see her walk in, take the seat next to him, wink to him and proceed in saluting the audience as if she had done this since she had been born.
“Good evening, everyone. I’m glad to be here. You have to excuse Aoi-san for a few seconds, he seems to have forgotten how to speak from the shock.” She said laughing softly.
“Miyuki-san, it’s a pleasure to have you here. Congratulations. Would you mind jumping straight into the subject?”
“Not at all.”
“So, were you a fan of the Gazette when you two met?”
“No, I wasn’t. Didn’t even know who they were actually. I have been listening a bit to it lately, though. I must admit I like the sound.”
“So do you support your fiancé in his career and all the activities that involve being a celebrity? I’m sure it must be quite a difficult schedule to adapt too.”
“Yes, well, it’s not easy but it’s not as hard as you may imagine either. I am myself quite a busy woman so I know how much doing something you like means to a human being. I support him completely. I have long come to terms that music and the fans are first on his schedule and I wouldn’t have it any other way. He is the happiest on stage after all and I want him to be happy.”
“I am sure the fans are very happy to hear that.”
“Yeah, I’ve seen him brooding over the messages he received lately, worried about the fans getting disappointed or something. If possible, I’d like to take this chance and tell the fans my honest opinion. If you truly like the Gazette then you like their music as well as them as human beings. And you should be able to understand how much it takes to be able to perform at such a high level and give so much of oneself out there. Trust me, it’s not easy. Aoi-san and all the members of the Gazette truly think about you as a member of the band, as family and I just think that a member of a family never abandons another, at least not in such circumstances. I for certainly know that Aoi-san or the other members would never even think about abandoning you.”
“Aoi-san, now I see what you’ve meant earlier.”
“Right?”
“What am I missing?” Miyuki had playfully asked.
“Oh, he was just having problems describing you.”
“Really, now? Hope he didn’t say anything mean or I’ll have to punish him properly.”
“No, not at all.”
“I bet.” The atmosphere was relaxed and everyone seemed to be having fun. Aoi thought himself lucky again.
“Ok, so now before we end, I would like to actually surprise you two once more…”
“Oh, oh.” Aoi said. No more surprises for one day…
“And take one live call from your fans.”
Ok, so maybe he could live with this, especially since Miyuki had gently grabbed his hand in hers, silently assuring him everything was going to be all right. In the meantime, the operator had already done his job and the girl at the other hand had introduced herself (between giggles and hard breaths and oh my gods).
“Aoi-san, I have to congratulate you and wish you all the best. I also want to thank the Gazette for bringing so much fun into my life. Oh my god, I can’t even believe I’m talking to you like this.”
“Thank you for being a Gazette fan and for supporting us. So, you wanted to ask me something?”
“Yes, you and Miyuki-san, if that would be ok?”
“I’d love to.” Miyuki had answered.
“I hope I’m not being rude. We fans have been talking about this for the last days, being worried about the band and everything and we were saying that Miyuki-san must be or have been a model or involved in the industry in order for the relationship to last. So, is it true?”
Miyuki had touched his hand, signaling she wanted to answer. Aoi was a bit upset with the fan for saying that, thinking that maybe she had been hurt. He could understand where the fans were coming from but still…
“Actually, I am in no way connected to this industry. Quite far from it, I could say, since I’m in maintaining the law business. Don’t let it fool you though; I’m not a stiff character. I don’t really think that being in the same line of work helps you understand your partner. It’s more important whether you make an effort to understand him or not.”
“Wow, Miyuki-san, I think I admire you a lot. And I’m sure all the fans are happy for Aoi-san.”
“I’m certainly happy myself.” Aoi had said. Soon after the girl had said goodbye. Miyuki was definitely something, Aoi thought. What was surprising about it was not the fact about being able to answer, I mean every Japanese had the right thing to say practically engrained in their genetic code, but Aoi knew that she actually believed that. And exactly that fact would be transmitted to the fans and make it easier for them easier to accept everything.
“Unfortunately, the time to end this is approaching rapidly so we won’t be able to take more calls although I’m sure there are many more fans who would like to talk with you out there. At the end, I would like to wish you two all the happiness out there and you, Aoi-san, to be able to continue climbing, together with the Gazette, higher heights.”
After everyone saying their goodbyes, the feared radio show was finally over and Aoi was surprised at how quickly it seemed to have past and that he had managed to make it out alive.
“Thank you.” He had honestly said to Miyuki.
“You have nothing to thank me for. I heard from Kai-san that you were troubled over this and that probably me coming here would help. I’ll be happy if I was able to help even if just a little bit.”
Aoi just found himself getting closer to her and then leaning in, tasting her lips again. It felt good, to be able to kiss her like that, feel her lean a bit into him, allowing him to control the kiss. He sneaked an arm around her middle and drew her even closer, not breaking the kiss, continuing to feel her lips with his own, biting a bit at the lower lip until she gave him permission to explore. Even though they had procreated a baby (which involved doing more things than simply kissing) it all felt new and a bit awkward and at the same time, sweet and nostalgic. It felt as if it was their first real kiss and maybe it was, in a way, because only now they were truly seeing each other, and falling in love. Aoi liked the security, her warmth, the way she replied to his advances, meeting him head on, always supporting him and at the same time being supported. They really did make a pair, he thought before finally drawing back and looking into her blushed face.
“Come on, I’ll take you home.”
She just nodded.
…………………..
That night, Sakito and the rest of the Naitomea members were having a late meeting with the staff, needing to discuss the quickly approaching tour. They were all tired and weary after the long day of practice and meetings and at the same time excited about getting on stage again. No matter how often they had concerts, they still felt it wasn’t enough. After everything had been arranged and everyone was finally getting ready to leave, only the five Naitomea members trailing behind a bit, it just happened that one of the staff girls had forgotten a magazine on the table and it was also a coincidence that the one to look at the cover was Sakito and it was really a trick of fate that exactly then Yomi was gazing intently on their band leader. It all led to Yomi finally finding out who the mysterious man was.
The magazine had been upside down, so Sakito picked it up and turned it around to look at the cover. The moment his eyes landed on the cover and the front title, he couldn’t remember where he was or what he was doing, he forgot to raise his defenses, be sure no one saw him react to that news, because it really had been impossible to focus on anything other than the colorful paper in front of him: the news of Aoi, the Gazette’s guitarist getting married in just a couple of weeks. Of course he knew about it, he had talked with the man himself, but somehow seeing it announced there with white letters on a black background certainly made it more real and even more painful. He quickly put the magazine down, forced himself to say goodbye to the members and practically ran out of their practice room.
After Sakito had left, Yomi walked leisurely to the table. He really would have rather run but the magazine wasn’t going anyway and Ruka would have laughed at him… He took the magazine, saw the cover and it all clicked. Sakito’s stubborn silence, their leader falling in love with a man, him declaring there was nothing he could do to make things right, the pained looks he’d sometimes throw Yomi and Ruka… everything clicked. Sakito was in love with the Gazette’s guitarist, Aoi, and Aoi was getting married soon. What a mess! Yomi thought. But there was just one little thing about the vocalist that set him apart: he refused to give up without a fight, even if he knew that the chances of him achieving anything good were minimal.
……………………….
It really was amazing how much difference Miyuki’s words had made. Over the next days, messages kept coming and the difference in the fans’ attitude was enormous. Sure there still were some worried voices or some hostile ones but the ones that supported them and wished them happiness had become the overwhelming majority. A lot of them expressed their admiration towards Miyuki and their desire that someday they too would be able to become strong, dependable women. (the Gazette’s fan base consisted of about 90% girls, a lot of them teenagers after all)
All the members were more than happy at the turn of events because this change meant two things: the fans understood that their private lives were theirs and supported them and another aspect: they really loved them not only for their looks but for their music. It had always been a question mark for the members, just how far did the fans actually consider their music? They were more than ecstatic when they got the questions about instruments’ handling and song composing because those obviously meant that the fans thought a lot about their music, it inspired them to try something new, create something, gave them dreams. Those were the moments when they thought that no matter how hard it got, they wouldn’t give it up for anything, unless they’d become no longer able to actually perform by their standards.
There had been just too many letters and packages to actually be able to read them all or open them all before the wedding. Their rooms at the PSC building were filled with letters and presents from the fans so it was really no surprise that when a special delivery came it would get lost among all the other packages. Perhaps it had been fate but Aoi never got to open the letter signed by Yomi.
And with all the nerves and preparations on top of their normally busy schedule, the wedding day drew closer and closer until it was finally there, the day his life would change, he’d go from single to married just like that, in a couple of hours, father and husband. To say that Aoi was nervous would be an understatement; he was panicking. He couldn’t understand how everyone seemed to be able to keep their cool. He was getting married, for Christ’s sake! And especially Miyuki, why did she seem so calm, it was her wedding too after all! Sometimes he just couldn’t understand women. Scratch that - he never could understand women.
And what was that, Kai had something to take care of and he announced being late? Something to take care of on the day of his wedding? It better be life threatening, Aoi thought. Otherwise, he’d threaten Kai’s life himself. And one more thing (he hated whenever someone barged into the room giving him another announcement): Ruki had disappeared too? What was happening?
A/N: Really, what could be happening? You know me and cliffhangers.
Oh, side note. Japanese weddings are not like Western ones. Sure you can have a church ceremony if you want to, and that is why Aoi is so nervous. The legal stuff is extremely easily resolved: you just send the papers filled and signed, that's it. And other than that, if you choose it, you can have a party or not, a western wedding or a traditional one, anything you like. For the record, Aoi is already married legally. But that doesn't mean he's less nervous at the church.
If you have any questions, feel free to ask. Anyway, I'll be waiting your lovely comments. Hugs
