Fan Fiction Foibles - Episode 6

Feb 06, 2010 23:32

It's the weekend! That means it's time for another episode of Fan Fiction Foibles! This week I bring you a subject that was actually requested: Digimon!

No, it's not a chapter from any volume of Dreaming To Reality, but it takes place within that universe. Explaining how is difficult and eventually it'll be made clear when the series finally progresses. Until then have a taste of some older drabbly goodness we did as we expanded things and made new plotlines to pursue!

The tentative title of this week's entry of Fan Fiction Foibles was "New Levels". It was about a boy named Shin visiting a digital world... only it wasn't the Digital World. Digimon World is the latest craze. With the card game getting so popular, the MMORPG that boasted virtual booths that allowed you to meet with almost real Digimon was too much to resist! However one day the program started to glitch and Shin wound up finding out that there might be more to Digimon than he ever expected...

Are there spoilers in this episode of Fan Fiction Foibles? I don't think so, but some things are referenced if you know where to look. However this may be rated R for blood and violence, or just PG-13 since it's not terribly detailed. Hard to say for sure. But, really, it doesn't top the first episode of Fan Fiction Foibles, so I think you're good to go.

"Accessing - Grassy Plains. Loading..." A female voice chimed as bright green letters flashed and hovered in a sea of darkness, the numbers 0 and 1 appeared in various forms and sequences as they rushed around in circles.

"C'mon..."

"Loading... 80%."

"C'MON already!"

"Loaded. Welcome to the Grassy Plains."

At that moment, the darkness disappeared and was replaced by massive fields of waving grass. The grass varied in height, from low to the ground to towering high above the head. It stretched for miles upon miles, with only the occasional tree appearing amid the strands of foliage.

Standing amid the fields was a young man with long black hair and bright red eyes. He wore a black spandex outfit with red trim, rather plain looking and not particularly interesting. Hovering over his head in bright red letters was "Shin".

"Welcome back, Shin!" a small Digimon appeared suddenly, smiling brightly. It was a yellow dinosaur wearing a white with blue stripes fur over most of its body. "This is Grassy Plains! You can find Plant and Beast Digimon here!"

"I know that already, Gabumon." the young man said stiffly as he walked past the Digimon, heading deeper in to the plains.

"I'll follow you!" Gabumon chirped as he followed Shin, not even noticing the young man's tone.

The young man muttered angrily under his breath as he walked through the field, Gabumon following him. "That freaking newbie... aggro-ing a bunch of Grizzmon and leading them right to me! At least I was able to warp out before they aggro-ed me, but now I have to walk all the way back! I bet some lamer stole my respawn spot, too."

Gabumon hummed merrily as he followed after Shin, swinging his arms about as his stubby legs followed after the cloaked boy.

Unfortunately for Shin, he was right. He reached the top of the hill, and soon enough saw another boy wearing yellow spandex with green trim standing at the bottom of the hill, his Patamon attacking a Floramon.

Shin grunted as he crossed his arms. "... I knew it."

The young man watched the other boy fighting the Floramon, waiting to see if he'd be killed and thus free the spot up. Unfortunately, the boy's Digimon was barely able to take out the enemy Digimon. Shin grunted at that before reaching to type at the device on his arm, which looked like some sort of gauntlet with numerous buttons. "Time to try my other spot."

"Where are we going now, Shin?" the Gabumon asked.

"Seashell Coast," Shin replied as he typed the area in. "I always find some good mobs there."

"Seashell Coast! You can find Aqua Digimon there! Yay, let's play in the sea!" Gabumon clapped his claws together before disappearing as the whole area around Shin became dark once more, with numbers swirling about him.

"Accessing - Seashell Coast. Loading..." the female voice said again, the green words appearing in front of Shin.

"This really isn't my day, is it?" Shin sighed as he rubbed the back of his head. "If this spot's taken too, I should just head back to my farm and maybe get some stats up..."

"Loading... 50%."

"I guess some speed training couldn't hurt," Shin mused as he tilted his head back, his foot tapping impatiently. "Or some defense."

Suddenly, there was a bright flash.

"Loa... loa... loa... l-l-l-loadi-i-i-i-!"" the female voice chattered as the words flashed and glitched about violently.

"Huh?" Shin was immediately snapped out of his thoughts, staring at the message in confusion. "What the f-!"

The darkness glitched about, as flashes of images of the various zones all mingled together in a violent spasm of color. Shin cried out and covered his eyes as the images flared about in a rushed pace, creating a painful fluctuating rush of light.

However, the display didn't last long as it suddenly disappeared entirely.

Shin cried out as he found himself tumbling to the ground, his legs giving way from under him as he landed on rough granite. The young boy grimaced as he hit the ground, eyes still snapped shut. He stayed that way for a moment, gasping for breath as he waited for his heart to stop beating so fast. Then, he slowly opened his eyes and glanced around incredulously. He was in a massive hallway made entirely of stone, lit with burning torches that barely managed to fight off the creeping darkness.

"Where the...?" Shin muttered before standing up, rubbing the back of his head as he glanced down either side of the hallway. "Is this some secret area? Did I activate an event...? Gabumon, where am I?"

The young man was greeted in silence.

Alarmed, Shin whipped around to look for his Digimon. However, Gabumon was nowhere to be seen.

Suddenly the silence was broken by the crack of a whip slicing through the air then striking something. The sound was relatively faint and echoed off the walls, but it was clear enough to be identified for what it was.

Shin jumped at that, immediately recoiling against the wall. He stood there for a moment, his heart thundering in his ears again. When nothing happened, the boy found himself glancing around curiously. It sounded as if it had come from further down the hallway.

"... This is probably a bad idea, but..." Shin muttered, before he straightened up and proceeded down the hallway towards the source of the sound.

Shin had barely made it three steps before the sound of the crack of the whip tore through the silence once again.

Shin jumped at that, covering his ears as he flinched. He hesitated before hurrying down the hall, wanting to find the source despite his judgment telling him how he should be going in the opposite direction.

Again and again the whip was heard, and as Shin got closer to its source. Finally he had arrived at the door of a dungeon with a massive iron door that had a small barred slot above the door knob peeking into the room where the sounds were coming from.

Shin nervously peeked in through the barred slot, wondering who was being pulverized so mercilessly.

Inside the room, Shin could see a large vampire Digimon standing in what appeared to be a dungeon, complete with chains and torture devices. The vampire Digimon growled, his lips curled up in a sneer as he tightened the whip between his hands with a snap.

Chained to the wall, which was stained in blood, both old and new, was a small Digimon, obviously a Child type. It looked like a mix of a dog and a wolf wearing a torn red headband and tattered boxing gloves. It had blue fur with a white underbelly, muzzle, tail tip, and feet, and a pair of piercing gold eyes that glared defiantly at the vampire Digimon.

However, the thing about the Child type Digimon that stood out the most were the wounds that covered his body that oozed blood. Streaks of it stained his fur, clothes, the floor, and most especially the whip that the vampire held. It breathed heavily, obviously in pain, yet it kept its defiant, hateful glare despite this fact.

Shin stared, tensing completely as he gripped the edge of the slot with trembling fingers.

"Those eyes remind me of eyes I used to know. And those eyes...," the Vampire hissed as he snapped the whip between his hands. "... Really irritated me!" As if to punctuate that sentence, the Digimon jerked the whip again before lashing it at the Child Digimon again.

The Child Digimon jerked as it was struck across the stomach with the whip, which created a brand new wound along with a spray of blood.

"Does that mean you believe this one is like them?" a decidedly female voice asked, though Shin was unable to see who spoke from his current vantage point.

The vampire stopped a moment to laugh. "No, that has nothing to do with it. This worm, much like that worm, has some rather ridiculous ideas about its own worth. Clinging to a false assumption of superiority, reflecting in those-!" The vampire Digimon growled at he snapped the whip at the Child again, over and over to punctuate his words. "IRRITATING, IRRITATING EYES!"

Stubbornly the Child Digimon refused to make a single sound, even going so far as to bite its lower lip in order to stifle any cries it might make, as each strike of the whip tore open more of its flesh. In spite of the agony it was being put through, every time the vampire paused in the attack it would stubbornly glare in defiance, even after one of its eyes was clouded by blood leaking from a new gash in its forehead.

The vampire Digimon curled the whip up again, regarding the Child Digimon with open contempt. He snapped the whip tightly between his hands again. "I'll get you to scream. And then you'll beg for mercy."

"Boss! BOSS!" at that moment, a small bat-like Digimon, covered in stitched leather fluttered down in to the dungeon gasping. "Boss!"

The bat yelped as the whip narrowly missed his head.

"Don't interrupt my play-time," the vampire snarled. "You know that."

"B-but there's an emergency!" the bat squeaked. "There's an intruder in the fortress!"

"WHAT!?" the vampire whipped about to glare at the bat, who shrunk back in fear. "Where!? Who would dare challenge me on my own territory!?"

"W-we don't know!" the bat squeaked again. "We just know t-there was some kind of a glitch and we detected an unknown presence!"

"It looks as if play time will have to wait for now," the female voice said, sounding as if its owner were coming dangerously close to the door where Shin was standing behind.

Shin was afraid to move, or even pull away from the slotted window. It was as if his entire body had frozen in place.

"Don't think of this as a reprieve!" the vampire snarled as he lashed the whip one last time at the Child Digimon. "Think of it as a mild delay in your destruction!"

With that, the vampire Digimon whirled and stormed off in the direction the bat Digimon had appeared in - away from Shin.

A moment afterward the person who had been standing by the door, a dark woman with tattered black wings, followed after the vampire Digimon, though the dim light and the fact that her back was to Shin made it hard to make out too many details.

The chained Digimon glared after the vampire Digimon and his companions and only finally slumped against the floor only after it was sure that they had left.

It was a few moments before the feeling returned to Shin's body. He wasn't sure what he had just seen, but he was sure that he was undoubtedly the intruder.

And he did not want to be found by them.

Shin quickly checked the gauntlet on his arm, and felt a flood of relief when he found that it was still functioning. He could warp back to his farm, and be completely out of their reach! He just needed to do it before they found him and aggro-ed him.

He should have left right then, at that very moment he found out that the gauntlet was working. However, something was bothering him - the Child Digimon. Shin glanced around nervously before moving to push at the door. At first, Shin found it difficult to move and was terrified that it might be locked. However, it soon enough began to creak open slowly and allow the young boy access to the room.

Shin hesitated before hurrying inside.

At the sound of the door opening the Child Digimon instantly went rigid again and turned its defiant glaring eyes towards the door. It was momentarily startled by the sight of the human child, but even still it didn't lower its guard.

Shin hesitated when he felt the Child Digimon's eyes on him. It felt so unnerving, making the human child realize why the vampire had hated them so much.

It felt as if the Digimon was glaring in to his soul.

After a moment, Shin regained his wits and hurried over to the Digimon. He wasn't sure what he was doing, or even if he should be doing such a thing, but found himself trying to remove the chains from the Digimon's arms.

The Child Digimon gazed intently at the human child, as if scrutinizing Shin's intentions. Finally, after a number of long, frustrating moments, it spoke. "What are you doing?" it asked in a rough voice that came with a breathy wheeze to it. It was an odd mixture of stubborn mental strength in that tone in spite of a weakening, and possibly dying body.

"T... trying to free you," Shin found himself saying as he tugged on the chains before grunting, finding them to be too stubborn. "Damn it... what level of locks are these!?"

"It's useless," the Child Digimon said, though its tone didn't sound so much defeated as if it were simply stating a fact. "Vamdemon has the key. You don't stand a chance against him."

"Vamdemon, huh?" Shin muttered. "... Yeah, I don't even have Gabumon... and even if I did, he's just a Child. Vamdemon's a Complete... he'd totally wipe the floor with Gabumon. ... So that means... we get out of here before Vamdemon shows up!" With that, the human boy stepped back and quickly checked his inventory. If he had known he'd be in such a situation, he would have packed some Keycards. He even had a Level 3 Keycard, which would've been perfect for the situation. However, he had left it at the bank and there was no way he'd be able to gate back to town, take out the Keycard, and make it back before Vamdemon came back and killed the Child Digimon. He would have to do without it.

"Damn, I need to hurry," Shin growled as he sorted through his items before stopping, blinking as he noticed one of the items - Veggiemon Venom, which he had picked up before when leveling at Grassy Plains. It seemed impractical, and surely it was never intended for such a use, but he was out of options. The human tapped his gauntlet to access the item, causing the vial of green liquid to appear. "Here goes nothing."

Shin moved to take hold of the chain and slowly tipped the vial, dripping the fluid on to it. Much to Shin's delight, the chains hissed as the venom devoured the metal greedily. The chain snapped completely, coming loose and freeing the Child Digimon's arm.

"Great! Now the other one!" Shin said eagerly as he moved to pour the liquid on the other chain.

The Child Digimon stared at Shin oddly and jerked its arm back once the chain was broken. It then repeated the action with the other arm. Though it still had the manacles around its ankles, it no longer was forced to remain standing, and it barely kept from collapsing to the floor altogether, holding itself upright with one shaky hand.

Shin used the vial on the chains binding the Child Digimon's feet, before discarding it. "There. Now we need to get out of here!"

The human aimed his gauntlet at the Child Digimon, typing a few buttons. A menu appeared, titled 'Party'. His name was on the top of the list - normally it would feature Gabumon, but it was noticeably barren. With a few clicks, the gauntlet glowed slightly before a new name appeared on the list - Gaomon.

"Huh? Gaomon? That's what you are?" Shin blinked before nodding. "Okay, Gaomon. Let's get out of here."

Gaomon made no reply as it simply looked at Shin. However, rather than glaring, its look was more curious than anything else.

Shin moved to wrap his arm around the injured Digimon before pressing the large circular gem on the gauntlet, which rested right over the back of the hand. The gem started to glow before it flared brilliantly.

At that moment, the whole room was engulfed in darkness.

"Accessing - Digimon Farm. Loading..."

"It worked!" Shin cried out, feeling a flood of relief. "Now I need to warp in to my farm and see if Gaomon followed-!"

The human boy couldn't help but feel rather concerned, even a bit afraid that he had left Gaomon back at the fortress. While the Digimon had been in his party, he wasn't sure if it would gate him out correctly. After all, it didn't gate Gabumon in correctly!

Unfortunately, all he could do was hope.

Oooh, cliffhangery ending for the first half. Don't worry, the next half will come eventually. Sooner if I get enough requests. I'm just a sucker for feedback even though the name of the game is Fan Fiction Foibles.

Just goes to show that even though this is Fan Fiction Foibles I do listen to the requests of my fans. Fan Fiction Foibles is all about the fun!
