A/N: This was an entry for yukichan’s fic writing contest. First timer here, so forgive me for my grammar mistakes and, perhaps, a lack of creativity. But I still do hope that it suits up to your liking! Also, about Mia, well, the name came from Nino’s and the image I had in mind while writing this was like the girl from Aozora Pedal. :)

It's hard being in love with your best friend. You could put all your feelings in everything you do, but he will never see you the same way you want him to.
That's what Kazu thought as he let out a huge sigh, closing the photo album he had been looking through. All his precious memories with his best friend returning to him like avalanche.
He had been friends with Sho ever since the Sakurai’s have moved to the house next to theirs back when he was still in kindergarten. He was not very much interested in trying to do anything else aside from playing his games, but his mother kept on insisting that he stop himself from rotting at a very young age, and step out to the world and make a new friend. So he did. Kazu believed that it was the most important gamble he had ever made. His games versus a new friend. But luck was with him, he had hit the top prize. It was the only thing he had chosen over his games. And he will be the only one.
He did not know when it started, but his feelings towards Sho became much more complex than that of a best friend. But the moment he realized it was there, that was the moment he will never forget.
It was Sho’s 25th birthday. Usually, his parents would throw him this grand birthday celebration, seeing that his father was a big shot in politics, but this time around, he asked them to let him do what he wanted and simply celebrate it in his own way. He did. He celebrated it alone with Kazu. His best friend, Kazu.
“So, who is this special person?” Kazu asked Sho as he tried to sound apprehensive regarding the issue.
“Well…” Sho started. Obviously looking very uncomfortable as he started fidgeting and stuttering. He had his head down and looked as if it was too difficult for him to speak of the name.
Kazu was startled by his reactions. He had never seen Sho being this nervous. This had caused his own pulse to pound much faster, along with the anxiety creeping up his heart. Could it possibly be?
“Well, remember during college? When we went on a trip to Hawaii?” Sho inquired, but still looked unsettled.
“Uhm, yeah. What about it?” Nino remembered. It was one of those moments he will never forget. It was during that time when they were drinking themselves senseless one night at the beach. Pride stripped, secrets spilled. Nino never thought Sho would even remember. Sho was pretty much out of it already when that happened. Why would it come up now?
“It’s Mia. She confessed to me when we were in Hawaii. Just recently, we’ve met again, and well, we have started seeing each other. I think I like her. I think I love her.” Sho admitted. It was a confession that had made Kazu’s trail of thoughts halt to a stop and had almost caused his heart to do the same as well.
Overwhelmed, he was unable to speak. He saw Sho’s face crease in worry, so he uttered a few words that had definitely left his own heart wounded. “That’s very nice. Really. I’m so happy for you. You finally found your ‘One’. You make me proud.”
Kazu tried to keep his smile the entire night. Sho had sensed that something was off, but did not push Kazu to explain what it was. They had their laughs, they had their share of stories, they had created new memories, and now it was time for them to part again.
“It was really nice seeing you again, Sho. Thank you. Thanks for choosing me to accompany you today.” Nino stated, his true feelings flowing out of him as he said those words.
“Kazu, you’re my best friend. I want to spend my special moments with you. Thanks for accompanying me today.” Sho replied and suddenly pulled Kazu into a tight hug.
Kazu was beyond startled. This was an embrace filled with emotions. As they separated, Kazu held on to keeping up his tough act and bid Sho goodbye. As he turned and started walking towards his way home, Sho called out.
“Kazu! You know I’m here. For you, I’m always here.”
Kazu turned his head slightly, tears were filling up his vision, but he was far enough for Sho not to notice. “I know,” he yelled back. He continued to walk, and as he got farther and farther away from Sho, he whispered, “but I need you more than what you’re probably willing to offer.”
----------
It has been 11 months since the last time Kazu had heard from Sho. It is not that Sho had ceased to keep in touch with him, it was Kazu who chose to push him away. He ignored all his calls, never replied to any of his messages, and even moved into another place just to stay away from Sho. Kazu knew that he had hurt Sho badly by doing those things, but he had no other choice. He had a broken heart. A heart that needs healing. A heart that must stay away from the one that can cause it to swell in happiness, but also dwell in pain and sadness.
But a game of hide-and-seek has its end. One night, Kazu was walking home, and as he walked through the ice cold street, he felt like he was in a trance. He looked up in the night sky, reminisced about the day he used to make a list of presents with Sho for Santa to see on Christmas day. He smiled as he remembered their happy days. He wished they could be happy like that again. He wished he could see him again.
With Kazu’s head titled up, he did not notice that someone was standing on his way.
“I’m sorry, I did-“ What he saw made his mind stop working and caused his heart to start beating. It was Sho.
When Kazu came back to his senses, he tried to get away. It was too bad for him because Sho caught his arm, and being the bigger man, it was easy for Sho to drag Kazu towards his car. He shoved Kazu inside the passenger seat and briskly walked over the driver’s side. Sho ignited the car and started driving.
“Sho, where are you taking me?” Kazu asked Sho, but it was clear that Sho was too angry to even answer. He continued to drive for what it seemed like hours and parked outside an apartment building. Kazu recognized it as Sho’s apartment.
Sho did not speak a word as he killed the engine, got out of the car, took Kazu from his seat, and hauled him all the way towards his own apartment unit. When the door was slammed closed, that was when Sho spoke.
“So this is how you treat your best friend now, Kazunari?! I’ve tried to contact you, I’ve searched you everywhere. Why didn’t you tell me where you were? Why were you ignoring me?” Sho was fuming. It was expected, Kazu thought. He knew that when Sho happens to find him, Sho would be furious.
“Sho, I’m sorry. I had my reasons. You know I’d never do something like this if I don’t. I’m really sor-“
“Enough with your apologies!” Sho cut Kazu off. “I know you had your reasons. The problem here is that why you didn’t even bother to inform me. Kazunari, I thought I was your best friend? Why can’t you tell me your problems? I thought we would never keep secrets from each other, huh?” Sho continued his tirade.
“Sho, you are my best friend. And I know we’ve promised we won’t keep secrets from each other, but this time it was something only I can solve myself.” Kazu tried to explain.
“Oh, I see. So, you don’t need me anymore now?” Sho said sarcastically.
“Sho, it’s not like that. Please, try to understand me.” Nino exasperatedly tried to convince Sho.
“Then what?! What has gotten into you now? What happened to the Kazu I know? You know I almost died of worry. Don’t you care about how I would feel? Have you never thought about the fact that you would probably hurt me by pushing me away?” Sho shouted.
Kazu tried to control his own anger. Sho was already mad, and if he talked back to him, he knew that he would only be adding more fuel to the fire.
“Is it because I’m no longer important to you that you’re just throwing me away? You no longer need me, is that it? Huh, Kazu?” Sho never ceased talking, up until the point where Kazu can no longer hold it.
“I love you. I’ve always loved you. That’s why! That’s why I’m trying to stay away from you! Are you happy now?” Kazu shouted back. With those words, Sho was left dumbfounded. His reaction cannot be read. There was shock, realization and maybe even disgust, but Kazu no longer cared.
“You see, this is the reason why I didn’t tell you. You wouldn’t understand. I was afraid we’d lose what we have so I tried to keep everything in. Now that you know, you’d probably want to stay away from me, won’t you? The moment you told me you love Mia, it had hurt me more than you could ever imagine. I was trying to recover. I was only trying to ask for your understanding. Why can’t you give me that, Sho? Why?” Kazu was breaking down. At this point, he was angry. He was angry at Sho for making him declare everything out. He was also afraid. He was afraid that this would be the end of what he had always kept as something very precious.
Minutes have passed and no one has uttered a word. When Kazu thought that it was probably his queue to leave, he slowly stood up and looked at Sho’ eyes. He assumed that it would probably be the last time he would see those beautiful eyes.
“Now that you know the truth, the decision is up to you. You know where to find me. But if you’ve decided that I am no longer needed in your life, I am willing to walk away.” With those final words, he left Sho.
On his long journey home, his tears never stopped running down his cheeks until there was no more left to cry out. He smiled a bitter smile, he wouldn’t be getting his happy Christmas after all
----------
It was June. It was a happy time for everyone. It was a time for new beginnings.
Kazu was walking down the street when he spotted a small flower shop. It was his birthday. He thought buying flowers as a gift for himself wasn’t so bad. They are a beautiful company, and he thought that they would probably make him less lonely.
Kazu moved towards the roses. He had always liked roses. Maybe more so because of the fact that it was his birth flower, but he had just always adored it’s exquisiteness. A true beauty amongst the thorns.
As he moved his hand to take a red rose, another hand had blocked its way. The stranger’s hand took a rose, and lead it towards Kazu’s direction.
That hand. He knew that hand. But he was too afraid to lift his head and find out that he was mistaken. With his head still held down, the stranger spoke.
“I thought I loved her. But when you left, I realized I was wrong.”
Kazu could not move. If it was a dream, Kazu truly wished that he would never wake up again.
The familiar hand, along with the red rose, had slowly risen up heading towards his face. Fingers were held out to land at the bottom of his chin, urging him to look up.
“You were horrible. How can you leave your best friend all alone?” Sho spoke calmly, but his words had made Kazu worried, therefore, Sho continued.
“I want my best friend back. I want my happiness back. I want my life back. I want my love back. I want you back. Kazu, will you come back and stay with me?”
A beautiful smile had spread along Kazu’s face. This moment was one of those he had always dreamed of. For it to happen, he was beyond content. Having Sho with him, everything will be a bliss.
“Always. Now, get me those red roses.”
