× Summary: Nino and Sho are long-time friends, even if “friends” is a concept that cannot really describe their relationship because… Basically Nino uses Sho for his own purposes and Sho can’t help but surrender to him.

× Previous Chapters: Prologue, Chapter One, Chapter Two, Chapter Three, Chapter Four, Chapter Five, Chapter Six, Chapter Seven, Chapter Eight

× Note: I’ve been really busy in these last days… so I took in hand this chapter countless of times, every time only for “15 minutes breaks” T_T …And at the end it actually took me a lot to write it and probably the plot is not very smooth… I apologize for this, but as I’ve lost my beta-reader you can just take it as it is… XD
As always, comments are welcome! ♥

~Chapter nine~

--- --- ---

Nino and Sho weren’t friend anymore.
Or at least this was what Sakurai had declared… but the brat couldn’t believe that everything had ended between them.
It had been a simple joke, just like the innumerable ones he had already plotted in the past… or better, it was meant to be. He was not completely Nino’s fault if everything had slipped out his control! Well, maybe this time he had really gone too far, but he still found this whole situation completely unfair.
They had been friend for such a long time, that it was almost ridiculous that their relationship could end all of a sudden!
Without even a chance to make up for his “mistake”…

He felt like shouting.
He was angry, embittered, and he really needed to give vent to his feelings… but he was trapped: without Sho, he hadn’t his relief valve anymore.
He had gone through that situation for the whole week waiting patiently, because he was sure that everything would have solved sooner or later… but now all his hopes to make up easily with his best friend were gone.
And he wasn’t lucid enough to think over a solution by himself.
That’s why he decided to rely on the only one person he had left… and he called Aiba.

“Where are you? I need to see you right now!”
His imperative tone sounded pleasant not in the least, as dealing with an angry Nino wasn’t an easy task for anyone… and Masaki wasn’t Sho. He hadn’t his patience.
But during their phone-call the cheerful guy didn’t miss that bit of desperation, that plea hidden into Ninomiya’s voice… and despite they hadn’t get in touch since the “accident with Sho”, despite they had already broken up as a couple even before that… he couldn’t help but feel worried for the brat.
So he agreed on meeting as soon as possible.
It’s not that it took him much time to catch up with Nino, since they were both still inside the school courtyard… but when they finally met, Aiba had somehow the feeling that he’d made him wait too long.
The brat was pacing back and forth, visibly stressed out, and was muttering impatiently under his breath …
“What is it Nino? Why did you call me out so urgently?” asked hesitant the taller guy, unsure of what words he should have said in order not to bother him even more…
With much to his surprise, the brat didn’t snap back at him (somehow Aiba was really expecting it, since the last time they had talked he had even received a punch directly to his face), instead he crouched down, holding his head between his hands and let out a low sigh.
“I think I’m going crazy… I don’t know anymore that I should do… and I have to talk with someone, otherwise I’ll explode”

The taller guy looked at him in disbelief, then replied “Why me then? Didn’t you say before that I’m way too talkative for your tastes?”
“That was before…” grunted back the brat, ignoring for once that bitter remark “…when I still had Sho. He’d always been the only one with whom I liked talking somehow. But now… we had another fight today. I hadn’t even managed to make up with him, and we fought again!! It had never happened before… and I don’t know if, how or when I’ll be able to make up with him”
He expressed out loud his thoughts all in one go without any wavering, as he had actually struggled to keep everything inside until that very moment.
And he looked troubled indeed… but Aiba wasn’t going to act like the comprehensive friend and give him a kind slap on his shoulder, reassuring him that everything would have been okay… instead, he felt like pointing out his faults.
“Did you say him that you’re sorry, at least?”
Silence.
“…What do you mean?”
“Apart from trying to find a justification, have you tried to say him that you’re sorry for what you actually did?”
There wasn’t irony into his voice, he wasn’t joking nor making fun of him… Aiba was absolutely serious. And somehow stern, even though that strictness didn’t suit him very well.
“I… don’t know. I haven’t thought about it really”
“You should have, actually” insisted the taller guy “It should have been your first concern”
And by hearing someone like Aiba, who was usually naïve and absentminded, being now so confident about this… made Nino feel stupid and disoriented at the same time.
Because he realized that he didn’t know at all how to apologize to Sho. He had never needed it.
He was feeling like that ridiculous guy in yellow clothes that was appearing lately on TV… the one who comes from another world and ignores every basic rule of human’s relationships.
“I don’t know what I’m supposed to do” admitted Nino putting aside that little bit of pride he had left, that actually hadn’t done anything but cause troubles lately…
“Maybe you should be sincere… I mean, by looking at you right now it’s quite obvious that you really care about your friendship… you should let him know that. You should just tell him why you do care so much.”
“Why you ask?” the brat reflected upon it for a moment, as if he had never thought that there was a reason for that. It was a well established fact for him, no need to think over it. But if Aiba was right, he had to find the words to express what he had always considered implicit; otherwise Sho wouldn’t have ever listened to him.
“Well, we have always been together… it just feels wrong without him! For this whole week I… I think I really missed him. I’ve been looking forward to our next meeting, but I hadn’t imagined that everything was already ended…”
The cheerful guy smiled with a little hint of satisfaction “That’s good. Sho-chan will surely be happy in hearing these kind words coming from you… After all, it had worked for me!”
An interrogative stare compared on Nino’s face then he quickly asked for further explanations, since he wasn’t sure of what Aiba was implying…
“You know, you aren’t the only one who wants to straighten out this matter…” said calmly the taller guy, sitting down to a low wall nearby and looking at his crossed hands leaned over his thighs. “I went to Sho’s place the day after he found out our deal. I obviously knew that he was going to be really angry with both of us, but when I heard that he had been absent from school, I decided to go there… don’t ask me why. I just felt like doing it, since I knew already where he lives…”

“Sho-kun, there’s someone here for you” Mrs. Sakurai was knocking at his son’s bedroom’s door.
Aiba Masaki was standing beside her, pretending to be a friend from school who wanted to give back some notes he’d previously borrowed… he had somehow convinced her that it was an urgent matter, since it regarded an incoming test, and Sho had been really kind in lending his notes even though he himself was supposed to study…
Then, after a few seconds the top student opened the door and found Masaki right in front of him, who was greeting politely.
Of course, he couldn’t make a fuss nor chase him away as his mother was still watching them, so he had no choice but to let him enter inside…
And as soon as the door closed, Aiba immediately bowed in front of him
“I’m really, really sorry for what had happened” he declared firmly.
♦ ♦ ♦

“Why did you apologize again?” asked Nino in a bothered tone, as if he considered unnecessary that behaviour “You had already apologized before! Dozen of times, while you were telling him the whole story…”
“But I wasn’t sure that it had been enough!” exclaimed Aiba in exasperation “It had been really a bad moment for him and he probably hadn’t heard me at all, except for the shocking news I’ve told him…”
“How bothersome you are…” muttered the brat “…please don’t ever act in this way with me, if someday we’ll happen to fight. It’s really annoying! But… what happened next?”
After all, he couldn’t deny being curious about it.
“I stayed bowed until he accepted my apologizes!” he declared happily “At least, he was willing to talk with me after that”

♦ ♦ ♦
“I’m truly sorry for the whole “deal thing”. It had been a stupid idea from the start… I should have stopped it as soon as I realized what kind of person you are. The truth is, I’ve never met someone like you, really. You’re an incredibly nice person… and the mere fact of having dealt with Nino for so long is a proof of your great character!! I wasn’t lying that night we met: I’m really happy to have met you. But I understand you if you don’t want to have nothing to do with me from now on…”
Aiba took a short breath in order to recollect his thoughts as well, and stared firmly into Sho’s eyes: “…but just because of what had happened with me, or with Nino, I don’t want you to lapse into depression or to feel discouraged towards any other person you’ll happen to meet from now on… You deserve to be happy. I may have lost my only chance with you and you can be sure that I’ll keep regretting it, but you don’t have to lose everything as well…”
♦ ♦ ♦

“Oh… what an impressive speech! I haven’t said anything like that… ever” admitted Nino with a little surprise, pondering upon it “No wonder that he was willing to listen to you after that…”
Still, he was sure that he would have never been able to behave in that way. Forasmuch it could have been something nice to say, it was indeed too sweet and sugary… it could fit Aiba, but not him.
“Yes, I surely managed to make up with him…” continued the cheerful guy in a calm tone “…as a matter of fact, we kissed soon after.”
And in hearing those words, Nino had the impression that the earth had opened and had swallowed him up.
“You did what??”
He couldn’t understand why that conversation that seemed to be going towards a certain direction, now had abruptly turned upside-down.
“It was meant to be a farewell kiss, you know…” explained Aiba “I approached him slowly, giving him the chance to reject me if he wanted to… but he didn’t”

♦ ♦ ♦
The taller guy leant forward towards Sakurai, stroking softly his cheek.
If it was really his last chance, he wanted to have a final pleasant memory with him.
Apparently the top student had perceived it, because he didn’t do anything in order to reject him, nor he didn’t show anything that could reveal his uneasiness…
And without any further hesitation, Aiba closed his lips with his own.
It was a sweet kiss indeed, exactly like the first one they had shared: the cheerful guy was stroking his hair and neck while his tongue was caressing slowly his mouth… He didn’t want to be hot or passionate; he just wanted to be sweet. And when he felt Sho’s heart beating faster under his touch, he took it as a good reaction…
He was glad that he was actually doing something pleasant for him.
It was only when he felt Sakurai’s body shaking under his touch and something wet and salty fell on their lips, that he immediately backed off.
Because Sho was crying silently.
He hadn’t realized it immediately, but his cheeks were wet by tears and he was actually trying to hold back his sobs…
♦ ♦ ♦

“…what… why?” The brat didn’t know what to think anymore “You said before that you made up with him! What is this supposed to mean?”
“Don’t you get it yet?” replied Aiba in a disillusioned tone “He was thinking at you. He was answering my kiss, but it was you the one he was thinking about. And it’s not the first time actually…”
“Don’t joke with me! If it’s really like this, how do you know it?”
The taller guy let out a deep sigh and explained more clearly “Because he told me so. When I realized what was going on, I immediately apologize, once again. But he said that he wasn’t crying for me, for what I was doing… He was thinking at you. You know… he’s fallen for you. And that’s why he was so angry before… he couldn’t bear that you didn’t care about him at all”

The brat stood silently for a little while, then mumbled under his breath in a doubtful tone “I still don’t know what I should do now…”
“He loves you! What else do you need to know??” shouted the taller guy. While feeling envious and a little jealous, Aiba couldn’t stand that Nino wasn’t happy about the news.
“Love is bothersome. It’s difficult and troubling… I don’t know if I can manage that…”
And even though that reply was somehow mean and out of place, the cheerful guy let out a small laugh.
“It’s amazing how much you two are compatible with each other!! Or better, how Sho-chan is really fit for you… I’m still not sure of the contrary”
Another glare coming from the brat, and the taller guy hurried to explain himself better: “He actually had already said this very same thing to me, you know? He knew already that this would have been your reaction if he had tried somehow to confess to you, that’s why he didn’t tell you the truth. But now I’d like to ask you: do you really think that Sho-chan is a bothersome and difficult person to deal with? Because a love relationship depends from the person you are with… and I think that, between you two, the one who will have to struggle more would be Sho-chan. I’ve dealt with you already: you are the impossible guy, not him.”

Indeed, he had been right before when he labeled Aiba as a very loquacious guy… in the last minutes he had spoken more than Nino had done in the whole day!
But despite that “nuisance”, the brat had to admit that he could be right.
He had probably been oblivious towards Sho’s feelings and his usual behaviour surely hadn’t helped. He could imagine how his friend had felt cornered, without any chance to give vent to his feelings… and considering how he himself had felt during the last week, Nino could understand this very well…
“Okay then… I think I’ll try to talk with him once again” he said at last “But tell me one thing: why are you doing all this? I mean, I’ve already figured that you came to like Sho-kun… so you should be there with him right now, am I wrong?”
The taller guy let out a low sigh, the spoke sincerely “I actually would like to be with him right now. But I’m not the one he needs. I do really think that Sho-chan deserves to be happy, and if being with you is what he desires… for this time, I’ll give you this chance. But I’m warning you: if it doesn’t work, I’ll come back again. I want you to know that. So be careful, you just have one more chance.”
Ninomiya smirked in satisfaction at the friend, amused and pleased by his words… then he moved quickly towards Aiba and without any warning he posed a chaste kiss on his cheek “Thank you” he whispered happily “But you can be sure that I’m not going to let him go once again!”
And a few seconds later he had already rushed away, heading to Sakurai’s crowded house.

Aiba did his good action of the day!
You know… it’s Nino’s birthday after all :3
