of hats and things // jongdae/yixing; 3,567 words; humor, fluff; pg
They're supposed to be filming today, but Yixing is often easily distracted.

Yixing really likes Jongdae’s new hat.

Like, really really.

“It’s so fluffy,” he tells Kris, watching the top of Jongdae’s head as it bobs around the dorm. Unfortunately, Kris cares more about his Cheerios than Yixing’s infatuation with oversized Russian fur hats, but whatever.

Yixing is determined to touch that hat.

They’re filming Episode 5 today for Showtime though, so they’re all rushing around and he doesn’t get the chance to even ask because Jongdae takes it off once the camera starts rolling inside the main building, exchanging it for a snapback.

Sure, he still looks cute, drowning in his puffy orange jacket like the rest of them are, but it’s just not the same.

And yet when Yixing complains about the disappearance of the object of his desires, not even Luhan cares about his needs-only patting him once on the head with a knowing smile and a sly comment about other ways Yixing might want to touch Jongdae (He’s not really sure if Luhan meant for him to hear that one).

They’re all excited to get some fresh air during the day time, for once, and Yixing is no exception. He can’t remember the last time he got to spend a day at the beach, even if he is a little skeptical of going during the middle of winter. But he gets swept up easily in the enthusiastic chatter and planning and manages to temporarily forget about his very important mission until they’ve already piled into the vans.

The highway is a dull blur of other cars outside his window when the thought returns to him. He’s feeling kind of drowsy, and he’s pretty sure that Jongdae’s awesome fluffy hat would make an awesome fluffy pillow.

He flops his head onto his other shoulder, away from the window so he can question Jongdae for the whereabouts of his hat, but he ends up not saying anything and instead making a rather embarrassing squeaky noise in the back his throat.

Because Jongdae is curled up and fast asleep, the very hat in question being used to pillow his head against the window and it is literally too cute for words.

Literally, because Yixing can’t even think of a good comeback when Minseok and Luhan snigger immaturely at him from the back seat, the latter mouthing ‘I told you so’ at Yixing’s flustered expression.

He settles for turning his back to them in a humph, slumping in his seat and shoving in his earbuds to block out the obnoxious laughter of the two eldest members.

He doesn’t want to wake Jongdae up, because he’s sure it would be incredibly rude to ask Jongdae for his hat so he can use it exactly as Jongdae is doing now-and Jongdae probably looks better than he would with the fluffy material tucked next to his cheek.

And anyways, hat-less or not, a nap really does sound good right about now; it would undoubtedly be more entertaining than watching the scenery.

Yixing yawns and steals a last glance at Jongdae’s adorable sleeping position before closing his eyes.

He only likes the hat, damnit.

They make a pitstop at a rest area, and Jongdae’s hat is back! Yixing is really happy because maybe now is his chance to touch the hat. He tumbles out of the van with the rest of M (except Tao, because everyone knows better than to wake him up when he’s napping), but Jongdae immediately disappears to go talk to Baekhyun.

Yixing feels his smile slip into a frown as he watches Jongdae wander off, his head completely covered in fluffyness, and Luhan unhelpfully pats him on the back.

“There there, Yixing, you’ll get your chance,” he says, although his comforting advice is ruined by the lewd hand gesture he does afterwards to describe what kind of ‘chances’ Yixing could be having.

Yixing is not amused.

“I just want his hat,” he mumbles pitifully, but Luhan has his arm around Minseok and the two of them are already walking away.

Yixing feels sad and lonely, and decides to continue being sad and lonely by eating by himself. Luhan is being a very bad best friend, anyways. He’d rather eat rice than talk to bad friends. Or touch fluffy hats. Jongdae is being a bad friend too, because he won’t let Yixing touch his hat.

But that’s a lie, because Yixing hasn’t even asked him yet about his hat. He silently apologizes to Jongdae for saying mean things. Jongdae is nice; he would probably even let Yixing wear the hat, if he asked.

The camera follows him as he goes to order food, which he thinks is kind of dumb because there’s only one of him, which is not very interesting. He tries to be entertaining, but mostly he just acts dumb, and sure enough, by the time his food has arrived, the cameraman has already left to go film the other puffy orange jackets on the other side of the food court.

Looks like even the camera crew doesn’t want to be nice to him. But that’s okay because he has food, and really, he’d rather not be disturbed while there are things to be eaten.

He feels much better with a full stomach, and he tries not to act smug when he returns to the group to find Jongdae sulking and giving Luhan and Minseok the cold shoulder. Serves them right for doing rude things! Something about a wallet, he’s not really sure, but he’s glad he missed it.

“Karma’s a bitch,” he tells Luhan cheerfully as he climbs back into the van, and Luhan rolls his eyes.

“Hey, Jongdae, Yixing wants to touch you,” he says in response.

No! Bad friend. Luhan really is the worst best friend. Yixing kicks Luhan and sends him sprawling into the back seat with a yelp. “I just want to touch his hat!!” he yells, angrily. Why doesn’t Luhan believe him?

Jongdae is watching him skeptically. Jongdae doesn’t believe him either? Yixing feels like shrinking into his seat and hiding from everyone.

“Your hat is really nice and soft-looking,” he says kind of pathetically, pouting up at Jongdae as he tries at the same time to mold himself into the seat cushions.

Jongdae seems embarrassed, although Yixing doesn’t know why.

“Uhm,” he says, kind of awkwardly, and he reaches up to take off the fluffy object in question. “I mean. You can touch my hat? It’s just a hat.”

He hands it over to Yixing, and now that the hat is in Yixing’s hands, he’s not sure what to do with it.

But it’s so soft! Yixing gives it a hug and smiles up at Jongdae. “Thanks,” he says, but why does Jongdae look a little disappointed? Yixing feels his smile slipping again.

Jongdae sits down and pointedly looks out the window instead of at Yixing. “You’re welcome,” he mutters, but he sounds kind of angry. His face is bright red, too.

“Did I do something wrong?” Yixing hears himself asking, and suddenly Minseok and Luhan have busted up laughing and Kris is glaring at them all from the backseat because they’re going to wake up Tao.

“Oh my God, Jongdae, do you want Yixing to touch you?” Luhan gasps out the words between peals of laughter, his hands clutched at his sides.

Jongdae swears loudly at the two oldest. “Shut up,” he snarls, twisting around his seat to try and strangle Luhan. “Shut up shut up shut up.”

But he can’t reach them, and Minseok is still wiping tears from his eyes while Luhan breaks out in more high-pitched laughter, and even Kris kind of snorts in amusement.

Yixing blinks blankly at them all, and maybe this whole thing is somehow his fault? Because now everyone’s staring at him: Luhan and Minseok trying to muffle their laughter as they throw him teary eyed looks, Kris with his silent gaze, and Jongdae’s watching him with a bit of a panicky expression. Even Tao is stirring and opens sleep-filled, confused eyes in Yixing’s direction.

They’re all waiting for him to say something.

“I don’t get it,” he whispers, feeling more than a little uncomfortable when his comment encourages Luhan and Minseok to practically collapse with more laughter. Jongdae looks like he’s about to shoot them, and then maybe shoot himself, and when Tao loudly demands to know what’s going on, Luhan can’t take it any more and practically falls out of his seat.

“This is so great,” he manages between short breaths because he’s been laughing so hard he forgot how lungs work, “Yixing-you’re so dense-”

“Wha-” Yixing begins affrontedly, because he is not dense! But no one else seems to agree with him.

“Jongdae indirectly admitted he’d like you to ‘touch’ him and you’re best answer is ‘I don’t get it,’ I think that qualifies as dense,” Kris comments rather matter-of-factly, and the gears click in Yixing’s head and oh.

Oh.

“Oh,” Yixing says. He looks down at the hat in his hands and then looks up at Jongdae. “I don’t remember you saying that?”

And Jongdae groans and hides his face behind his palms. “I didn’t,” he says, sounding mortified.

“But Kris just said-”

Jongdae makes a strange noise and Luhan and Minseok start laughing again.

“I hate everyone,” Jongdae clarifies, sullenly, and he slumps in his seat and pulls out his earbuds, fully intending to ignore all of them for the rest of the trip.

Including Yixing, even though Yixing still has his hat.

But he feels worse than he did before. Yixing sighs and tucks the hat under his cheek (it really is very soft!!!), watching Jongdae with a frown on his face. The laughter in the car eventually dies down once it becomes clear that Jongdae isn't going to react to any catcalls or snide comments-his eyes remain closed, his arms crossed tight in front of his chest.

Yixing had thought that a second nap would help clear everything up, but when they arrive at their destination, Yixing feels just as confused as he did before. And also a bit disoriented. He rubs sleep out his eyes as everyone else tries to climb over him to get out the door.

“Hold on,” he says, because he’s tired and he doesn’t like when things don’t make sense, but no one is listening. Luhan steps over him and hops out of the car, followed by Minseok, and Kris and Tao are already standing about in the white beach sand. Jongdae and he are the only two left in the vehicle, but just as Jongdae makes to escape out of the car door Luhan suddenly pushes him backwards, into Yixing’s lap.

“I think you two need to talk,” he says, his voice dripping with glee and sexual implications, and before either of them can protest, he slams the car door closed.

Luhan is being an unbelievably bad friend today.

It is super silent and tense inside of the car, which Yixing doesn’t like one bit. Plus, Jongdae is still in his lap.

“Uh,” he says, and Jongdae jolts as if he'd been shocked and tries to move off of him.

“Sorry-” he squeaks, but the squeak turns into a confused whimper when Yixing snakes an arm around his waist to keep him from going anywhere.

Jongdae goes rigid in Yixing’s hold, though Yixing doesn’t miss the shiver that passes through the other’s body when he leans his chin on Jongdae’s shoulder. He can’t see Jongdae’s face, but he can see Jongdae’s hands, which are trembling and seem like they don’t know what to do, and that makes him sad because he doesn’t want Jongdae to be scared of him. He tightens his arms around Jongdae’s waist.

“I’m sorry for taking your hat,” he says, because he doesn’t know what to say and doesn’t know why Jongdae is upset, and Jongdae is more important than a silly hat, even if said hat is impossibly soft and comfortable (he slept an hour with it, he now has first hand experience).

But for some reason Jongdae actually chuckles slightly at this.

“It’s not about the hat, stupid,” he mutters, but there’s no malice in his voice and he relaxes a little in Yixing’s arms. “It’s just.”

He sighs, and his hands reach to half heartedly pick at Yixing’s sleeves. “You don’t mind?” He asks quietly, his voice small but still easily heard in the private atmosphere of the car. “That I like you?”

“You like me?”

“Are you serious, Yixing-” Jongdae half shrieks at him and suddenly turns around to fist his hands in Yixing’s collar and glare at him like he’s grown three heads.

Last time Yixing checked, he only had one head, and he’s not really sure what the big deal is here.

“But I like you, too,” he says, like this is obvious, and Jongdae stares helplessly at him like he’s not sure if Yixing is even speaking Korean.

“You do?” He asks weakly, looking like he might faint. Yixing nods and opens his mouth to say something but then Kris opens the door and Jongdae squawks and tries to pry Yixing’s hands from around his waist.

“We’re filming in five minutes,” Kris says, watching with mild interest when Jongdae manages to escape Yixing’s hold and pushes past him, taking off as soon as his feet hit the sand.

“Wow,” He says, raising an eyebrow at Yixing as he hops out of the car as well. “What did you say to him?”

Yixing shrugs, grabbing Jongdae’s hat from the seat before Kris closes the door, because Jongdae is probably going to get cold without it and he doesn’t want that.

“You said he wanted me to touch him, so I gave him a hug?” Kris visibly winces at that statement.

“That is not what he meant, Yixing.” Kris is talking to him like he is a child, which confuses Yixing even more because Kris only does that when he thinks Yixing is being really, really dumb. And Kris is usually right.

“Not what he-” Yixing flounders helplessly because he doesn’t get it and everyone is expecting him to get it. “Don’t be like this,” he whines sadly, because he’s still sleepy and even more frustrated than he was before.

Kris does not laugh like Luhan would. Kris pats Yixing on the shoulder and gives him facts.

“Try kissing him next time, wise guy,” he says, managing a small smile, and then he walks away, leaving Yixing rooted to his spot as he goes and joins the rest for filming.

Kissing him?

Oh.

Oh.

“Yixing, we need to start,” Junmyeon is calling for him, which reminds Yixing that they still have a show to be filming. Now is not the time for kissing anybody.

“Sorry!” He yells back, and quickly runs over to join everyone-but wait, he is still holding Jongdae’s hat!

“Jongdae!” The Korean man turns at his name and quickly turns scarlet when he sees Yixing standing in front of him. Jongdae is cute, Yixing thinks.

“Here’s your hat,” he says, and he hands it over, giving Jongdae a bright grin because it’s better if everyone is in a good mood once the camera starts rolling. Jongdae kind of splutters at him, but that’s all right because he accepts the hat with a mumbled ‘thank you,’ which means maybe he is not so mad at Yixing after all.

Filming goes smoothly, and Jongdae quickly returns to his usually bubbly self, enjoying running around and filming the others with his own mini camera. It’s probably one of Yixing’s favorite Showtime recordings so far, and everyone else seems to share his sentiments (Except maybe Luhan and Jongin and Junmyeon because it’s freezing and there’s a possibility that they’re going to get hypothermia now that they’re soaked to the bone).

They’re all in high spirits, and they’ve got some down time on the beach until the sun starts going down because the director wants an evening shot that’s going to be for Episode 6.

Yixing’s not actually sure which cuts are going in which episode anymore, but whatever. That’s not important.

What’s important is that Jongdae and his hat are both missing.

Well, not really. Yixing knows that if he turned a little to his right and looked towards the water, he’d see Jongdae messing around with Sehun and Tao, but he’s not sure if he wants to look because if he does, that will make him want to go over there.

Which is probably not a good idea because he is pretty sure Jongdae wants some space, especially from Yixing.

Yixing doesn’t really like that. He didn’t mean to do anything wrong! How was he supposed to know Jongdae liked him?

When he had woke up this morning, everything had been nice and simple and only about hats. Now it’s about feelings, which are complicated and confusing. And it’s all that hat’s fault.

Yixing hates that hat.

Maybe he shouldn’t bother Jongdae because the other looks like he is having a lot of fun with the younger members, but this is important, so why is Jongdae trying to avoid him, anyways?

Yixing nods to himself and marches down the beach, right up to Jongdae and Sehun and Tao, planting himself in the middle of their game of How-Much-Sand-Can-We-Get-Down-Tao’s-Coat.

“Can we talk?” He says, directly to Jongdae, and the other two make dumb ‘oooooooooh’-ing noises. Jongdae crosses his arms, staring up at the sky to avoid looking at Yixing all together.

“No,” he says shortly, but Yixing thinks Jongdae is being stupid so he grabs Jongdae’s wrist and pulls him away anyways.

“What do you think you’re doing-?!!” Jongdae shrieks rather hysterically at him, trying to wrench himself free, but Yixing manages to drag him far enough away that all the other members are out of ear reach. The only sounds around them now are the lazy waves of the ocean, and Yixing gets distracted a bit by the pretty streaks of orange that have begun to spread across the sky.

Oh, but he’s supposed to telling Jongdae something important. Hesitantly, Yixing turns around to meet him face to face, keeping his hold on Jongdae’s wrist so that the other can’t make a break for it.

“Yixing, can we please not talk about this-”

“Kris told me that I should kiss you,” he informs Jongdae rather abruptly. “Do you want me to kiss you?”

Jongdae immediately shuts up, his eyes going wide as saucers and his mouth parted in shock.

His fluffy hat frames his face and makes his head look twice as big, which Yixing is about to admit looks really cute until he remembers that he is not supposed to like the fluffy hat anymore.

But Jongdae still isn’t saying anything so he ends up blurting it out anyways.

“You’re really cute,” he announces. Jongdae just stares at him like he’s from another planet.

Yixing can feel the tips of his ears burning with embarrassment, because this is really not how he meant for this to go.

“I am not against kissing you,” he tries again, speaking slowly because he is afraid that his words won’t come out right. “I don’t think? I have never really thought about it, before. But.”

“But?” Jongdae speaks finally, and it’s quiet and tentative. Like he’s walking on eggshells. Yixing does not consider himself an eggshell.

Jongdae seems frustrated. “Look, if you’re messing with me,” he begins, but Yixing doesn’t like where that is going because of course he wouldn’t mess with Jongdae! So he claps a hand over Jongdae’s mouth.

“Don’t say that, this is important,” he whispers, watching Jongdae very seriously.

Jongdae goes very, very still. He mumbles something under Yixing’s hand that Yixing doesn’t quite catch.

And when Yixing goes to remove his hand so that Jongdae can repeat himself more clearly, Jongdae takes a step forward, his face moving in only a breath’s width away from Yixing’s own.

Oh.

“Oh,” Yixing says, dumbly, and then Jongdae’s hands are cupping his face and his eyelids are fluttering closed and then Jongdae is kissing him.

Oh.

Jongdae’s lips are really warm and soft. He pulls back after only a moment, but Yixing’s lips feel tingly and nice even afterwards.

And he kind of wants it to happen again so he stops thinking and follows after Jongdae’s retreating lips to claim them a second time.

“So you really do like me,” Jongdae murmurs after the second kiss, his eyelids still heavy and a note of awe in his voice. Like he can’t believe it.

“Why wouldn’t I like you?” Yixing still doesn’t get that. He’s always liked Jongdae, why would he think otherwise?

Jongdae rolls his eyes at him and winds his arms around Yixing’s neck. “I meant this kind of like,” he says, laughing at the face Yixing makes at that. It still makes no sense, but Yixing decides not to worry about that because Jongdae is smirking and then kissing him again, but harder and more passionately this time, and it’s making Yixing feel light-headed and almost giddy.

He finds himself wrapping his arms around Jongdae’s waist to pull him in closer, and matching Jongdae with the same kind of fervor in the kiss, and Yixing thinks he might like this a lot.

Like, a lot a lot.

“Hey, Jongdae, where can I get a hat like yours?”
