Tonight I experimented with a bag of mixed frozen seafood and a bag of mixed frozen veggies. I was hoping for stir-fry, but there was too much moisture and it ended up as more of a saute. Still worth eating, though, and I have more of both main ingredients in the fridge so I may very will improve the recipe before sharing it. This could be a nice, inexpensive way to eat seafood-- a one-pound bag of mixed fish, octopus, shrimp, scallops, mussels, and imitation-crab surimi cost only $3, and I only used a fourth of it to cook tonight.

In other news, I've been making a lot of dal in the slow cooker lately. If you don't have all the spices and budget is a concern, maybe curry powder can be used to substitute? It has almost all the spices listed here, but the proportions are definitely not going to be the same.

- 1/2 cup dried red lentils
- 2 cups water
- chopped onion to taste/texture
- 1 small-ish tomato, chopped
- 1/2 tsp turmeric
- 1 tsp garam masala
- .5 tsp cumin
- 1 tsp. ground coriander
- garlic to taste
- ginger to taste
- chili powder to taste

Put everything in a 1.5 quart slow cooker, abandon on Low for 6 hours. At this point I like to chop in a potato and some veggies and cook another hour on High for a one-crock meal, but that's optional.
