Who: Mahaado, any others who wish to stop by Where: Purple Papyrus Book Store, down the street from the Domino City Museum, four blocks over from the Black Clown Game store When: April 10th Why: Because the book store is now open! ^^
Anzu was on her way home from school that afternoon and decided to take the long route home. Her parents were out of town...again...and she really didn't have anything better to do at current.
She thought she might stop by Otogi's store and challenge a few people to a dance duel - not that she was REALLY in the mood for it, but what better to do with her time? She didn't have any homework and she was somewhat bored.
Try lonely.
Coming around the corner, the first thing she noticed was the renovated shop. She remembered how some days she would get lost in the stacks and she would help the owner move things from time to time, bless him, he was getting up in age and couldn't do things as much. He would always reward her even though she never formally worked for him.
She missed him.
'I wonder if a relative of his is working the shop then...' she thought as she pushed the door open. "Hello?" she called out.
Mahaado looked up from his book and adjusted his glasses. He didn't exactly smile, but he was friendly and polite none the less.
"Good afternoon Miss. May I help you find something?"
His green eyes looked the pretty school girl over for a moment, but he didn't linger long. They were both interrupted by a loud meow that was a combination of a far away hello and wait for me! The frantic pattering of little paws was heard as Zalika came leaping down the stairs and running towards the new visitor in her territory. The kitten tried to stop on the hardwood floor and ended up skidding right into Teas legs.
Before Anzu could answer the handsome store owner, she felt something yelp and bump against her legs as she looked down seeing the kitty there. She giggled kneeling down petting the kitten. "I apologize little one. How are you?" she tickled the kitty under its chin.
"Ah, that is Zalika. She's our official greeter here."
He was loath to put down his book, but it seemed he'd have to at least pretend he was interested in serving her. People in Japan expected store workers to be their new best friend in their efforts to encourage sales. He himself found this to be very disagreeable behavior, especially for a quiet place like a bookstore.
He came around the counter and picked up his kitten. She cuddled for a moment under his long fingers and then climbed her way to perch on his shoulder with a haughty expression of authority as if she owned him and not the other way around.
"Are you looking for a book for a school report? I have set aside a few that seem popular with the teachers."
"Zalika, eh? Well she's very cute," Anzu smiled as she got back to her feet watching the kitten crawl around and settle around his shoulders before turning her attention to the store employee. "Oh, um, no actually. I just used to frequent this shop and I knew that it hadn't been in business in a while and was a bit surprised and thought I'd see who had taken it over. Are you a relative of the old owner?"
"No, my mothers friend is a relative. I just happen to have the time to take over the business as the family didn't want to sell it to a developer."
He ran his hand over Zalika absently as he spoke. He didn't particularly like most people, he truly preferred to be left alone with his research. But this girl although cheerful didn't seem as, what was the word, fake, as most he had met.
"Tell me, as a regular customer, do you find it's changed too much?"
Anzu nodded in hearing the explanation the other gave her as to how the business came to be reborn again. That made perfect sense to her as if she were in the same situation, so...
Taking a look around the shop, she noticed a few small changes with it, but nothing too drastic. She shook her head. "Not too much that I can see. I'm just glad it's still here," she said. "I can't say I have many memories here, but for the ones I have, I do cherish them. Might I ask though, would you need any assistance in any way?"
"I'm looking for someone to run the coffee bar for me. And to watch the store when I'm called away. I sometimes do research for the Museum."
He didn't waste any time in long explanations. He tilted his glasses down for a moment to give her a long appraising look, his sargasso eyes deepening as his cat turned her head to peer down a the girl as well.
"Sure," Anzu nodded. She didn't mind either way. It would be a nice welcome distraction from...other things. "I've been a waitress before and I'm familiar with the store" she said still smiling.
"What days are you available to work? Is the store very far from your school?"
Mahaado still didn't know her name, but he'd already decided she was the one to help out around here. He was an odd sort by most peoples standards, caring less about practical things and more about the complex things going on in his head. Having another person around to rely on to notice real life details when he was absorbed in his studies was a necessary thing.
He made his way back over to the neat store counter, striding purposefully behind it to find a calendar book. Zalika held on with her tiny claws but he didn't seem to notice.
"Um...usually Mondays, Thursdays and Fridays are my best days unless I have a recital - I dance," She explained. "And no, actually it's on my way to and from school," she fibbed. The store was slightly out of her way - like fifteen minutes or so, but it really wasn't a problem considering her folks were never home and she had perfect attendance at school.
"It sounds like this will work out. Here, please use this to keep track of the hours you work."
He handed her the book and was glad to see her eagerness. She seemed like a person who needed something to do, and not just because of the money.
"You can start as soon as you're ready. I'll match whatever pay you were getting at your last job to start and we'll see how it goes, does that sound fair?"
Anzu took the book he handed her smiling "Thank you very much. I can start tomorrow. Uhh...I'll have to check my paystubs to see what I was getting at my last job - I can't really recall the amount right now, but thank you again, Mr...?" it wasn't until right then that she realized she'd been talking to the gentleman all this time and not having even bothered to have asked his name.
"It's Mahaado, the same as on the sign out front and on my business card. You can have a few by the way."
He handed her some of the cards from their holder on the counter. His name was neatly printed under the name of the shop, along with all the contact information for it.
"Do you happen to have a name? Or would you prefer I make something up?"
He asked casually as if it made little difference to him. He had already started reaching for the book he had been reading once more with a certain egarness.
His name was on the sign? Since when? Anzu, you idiot! Usually she was so observant about these things, but the excitement of seeing the store open again had obviously blocked all these other factors as she took the cards from him and replied in regards to her own namesake. "It's Mazaki. Mazaki Anzu" she answered.
"That's a very bright sounding name. It's nice to meet you Miss Mazaki. And I look forward to working with you."
He gave her a slight bow, as was the custom. Zalika took the opportunity to pipe up with her own meow of a welcome. She jumped down onto the counter in front of them just preening for more petting.
